Are the USB chargers 3.1 amps?

      Hi There!
I apologize for the delay in responding, as I was reaching out to some of our technical instructors for their advice on this subject. Here's what they had to say:
There are now over a dozen recognized USB configurations, but only a few that involve dedicated charging.
USB 1.0 is so old you aren’t likely to find them anymore.
USB 2.0 gives .5 amps and has a black plastic interior.
The 3.0 series gives .9 amps and has a blue plastic interior. The 3 series includes 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2. The main differences are the number of wires, the color of the plastic interior, and the available transfer speeds.
They all have just 2 wires for charging and run on 5v DC. The higher the amp rating or wattage, the faster they charge. The USB BC 1.2 compliant charger output port on a PC can provide a maximum 1.5 amps. It can do this even when you are transferring data.
The latest and greatest is the USB 4.0 series that allows for data transfer while charging and powering of accessories in the USB C configuration only, with outputs up to 100 watts or 20 amps!
All current phone chargers, power bricks, and USB outlets in cars and RVs provide 5 volts dc, and the current will max out at .5, .9, or 1.5 amps.
USB Power Delivery establishes operating protocols to ensure that the higher voltage available in the recent USB releases does not damage legacy equipment which was designed for 5 V operation.
The USB Power Delivery requires conforming equipment to initially deliver 5 V at a maximum of 900 mA to the load to prevent such damage. Communication between the load and the power source can then establish a higher maximum load current and greater operating voltage.
If no communication ensues after connecting the load and the power supply, then the power supply configuration remains at 5 V and 900 mA maximum load current capacity.
If communication between the load and the power supply is lost after it has been established, then the power supply will safely revert back to the 5 V and 900 mA configuration.
That feels like a lot to digest, but I hope it's helpful. Let us know if you have any follow up questions!
