      Just terrific!!! I'm so glad I found you back in May, as I've gained more than I can say from these free videos and your in-depth courses (I've signed up for 3 of them so far, with my eyes on many others :-). The Theory 1-8 was beyond revelatory . . I keep going back to it, and it's an excellent preparation for some of the other courses. The How to Write Music like Mozart Webinar is just absolutely fantastic too - so much insight - Thank you and best from America!

      Gareth Green is a well respected tutor and examiner. I’m therefore rather surprised that he names the chordal progression as C7, F7, B7 which implies the use of the basic tonic triad with the addition of the minor 7th; when, in fact, he was clearly demonstrating Major 7th chords.
      You’re excused Gareth lol.

    Strikes me that all the best music is highly organised , on different levels simultaneously . I’ve found through trial & error that anything if thoroughly structured as in complete ,it will make sense ..... you just have to add the rhythm , feeling and variety of texture to tell a story . Fantastic lessons Gareth , you are raising the standard . 🎼

    The C7 is in fact the major 7 not the dominant 7, so should it have been written Cj or C maj7 for clarity or have I got this wrong, as I thought C7 had a bflat in it.

    Another, perhaps easier to remember way to see this progression is as roots going down the circle of fifths. Though your presentation in terms of alternating fifths and fourths has the advantage of hinting at proper voice leading.

    Just wandering through the archives. I remember how astounded I was to hear how Poulenc used the Major7 chain of chords in his Organ Concerto. It was as if a whole other universe opened up. I still get shivers every time I listen to that piece and that particular sequence. (C7-F7-Bb7-Eb7-Ab7-Db7-back to C7)

    When you mention the e in f7, that would be and f major 7th. That would make sense, since it is the subdominant, but are the chords in the chain generally dominant 7ths?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The great thing about using the chain is that you can choose whether to make it a major 7th or a Dominant 7th. This is what gives it such flexibility in relation to key eg I could use Cmaj7 and stay in C major or I could use C7 and shift into F major.

    Great video! You are amazing. I have a question. What were you doing around 3:00 minutes for the baroque style? The left hand goes down by how much each time? What is the interval? And what exactly is the right hand doing it it doing an arpeggio of the chords in the order of the chord chain? Also do you have a Music Matters Music theory book? I was trying to see if I could get a book. Thank you!

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. The Bass follows a pattern of down a 5th up a 4th, with a right hand pattern that starts on the 7th, then the 6th, then 5th.

  • @kblu65
    @kblu65 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m a beginner…In the beginning of this video, you say, “C7 chord”, which is the dominant 7th, should I assume that you mean play CM7th!!!

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      C7 using a Bb would be a Dominant 7th in the key of F. What we’re saying here is that you can follow the pattern I’ve outlined by adding a 7th in the prevailing key. So if you’re in C Major you can use CEGB.

    • @kblu65
      @kblu65 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's actually a C Major 7 (C-E-G-B) not a C7 (C-E-G-Bb). Same for the F Major 7 (F-A-C-E) not a an F7 (F-A-C-Eb)

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s correct. As explained in the video the 7th used always relates to the prevailing key. One could of course use a C7 with a Bb if using this device to modulate to F Major. This is one of the great joys of the chain of 7ths - that one can vary the 7th in order to modulate.

  • @donlessnau3983
