Disappointed not to see more effort on wildlife. Wasn't Kuwait once fishing tribes? Large Parks and Reserves should be essential to any settlement so a connection to the natural world is maintained. The fixation on creating dysfunctional cities reliant on others for sustenance is a worrying trend. It's also a shame to see so many modernist high-rises. There's nothing culturally significant to signify Kuwait identity or Kuwait architecture. The first picture from the 60's had more character. They're relatable by having direct connection to local materials, climate, culture and purposeful usage. Imagine a person in South-West England wants to build a house. They mine local cotswold stone, local slate and fell local trees. Then, using the foundational building blocks of functional architecture, they build walls with a door to enter and exit, small windows for light, archways and columns for structural integrity etc. All of these elements have a purpose relevant to locsl human scale and functionality. Buildings done in this way--with a traditional ethos--are recognisable and reflect the people and place. Although it's possible to pour concrete in any shape and there's an abundance of glass and plastic-compound cladding, architects shouldn't dismantle these grounding principles. Otherwise you create confused buildings for the sake of creating abstract shapes. I mean, what is a corkscrew towers purpose? What is the purpose of a cylindrical building diagonally sliced at the top? Or a bent spire? There is no significance to them. Compare that with a mosque. A mosque is instantly recognisable and culturally significant because of it's elements grounded in human functionality. Example: -A human wants to call for worship. -A tall tower is necessary to amplify his voice. -The minarets being towers serve a purpose relevant to a humans function. They're not towers for the sake of being a 'cool feature', minarets are functional and signal the local faith. It's a show of the local social fabric. Sadly I see too many culturally void buildings with no sense of place. The scale of mega cities are intrinsically troublesome.
H MF London like other cities continues the trend of childish modernist shapes polluting the historic landscape. 'Walkie-talkie', 'Gherkin', 'Shard' and more culturally-void infantile designs with no consideration for fitting in with surroundings grow like a cancer. Yet visitors to London still picture themselves in front of historic quintessential British architecture. Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge--even phone boxes are of interest.
