Dude! I made a drunk purchase of a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 about 6 years ago and I regularly thank myself for it. That lens has taken some amazing photos over the years. I didn’t “need” it at the time but now I love it.
Need help!! What Sony setting on a7iv can I use to help the review products while doing a talking head video. Camera locks on the face and not the item when in front of the camera 🤦🏻 any suggestions?
That would be the autofocus shift sensitivity. If it’s set high it’ll stick on a subject, and it it’s set low it’ll switch quickly. Always a good idea to cover your face too so the camera doesn’t try and stay on it.
I never comment on videos because I never feel the need to, but the format of how you presented all the information I was looking for is superb! Subscribed! And thank you for this amazing video!
Wow thank you! It really means a lot to hear this! I hope I can make more videos that are just as helpful. It's always tricky wondering if what's in my head makes sense to someone else 😁
Great video, Tom! :) 85 is pretty cool! I tried one recently on my guitar channel and it was awesome for a particular headstock/neck shot while playing. Excellent stuff!
I think what you mentioned about how believing that wider focal lengths were the way to go, then learning to love tighter focal lengths later - goes the other way too. I was always in the school of thought that longer focal lengths and the compression you get from it made everything prettier, but then as of recently, I've learned to appreciate the perspective warping of wider lenses. Going too tight in focal length prevented me from learning how to compose with leading perspective lines other skills i wouldn't have otherwise learned when shooting longer focal lengths only.
I agree 100%. It's a big reason why I still recommend people get a "kit lens" when starting out with cameras. It's usually a good way to learn a bit about your own shooting style and then you can decide what you need more/less of as time goes on.
Got the 90mm sony macro and its amazing! It's only 2.8 but that's a tradeoff I'm willing to accept for the macro feature. This lens covers a lot of uses!
I cut my portrait teeth by experimenting with f.1.8 - f.5.6 because a lot depends on the subject and the environment. In the studio I would test having the background closer or further away and trying to find that sweet spot. I did this with the Mannequin Head, no model or client would've survived this... Many portraits were made with higher f stops to make more of the head appear in focus. It's seldom that I really liked the f.1.8 in the traditional client portraiture. It's another thing when I'm doing more creative stuff. But the versatility of the 85mm is fantastic.
Wow! This channel is great! I came for the tilta cage for fx3/30 video and start watching other ones!. Definitely the 85mm a great lens that everybody needs to have. Sending this to a friend that’s unsure about getting one.
Yeah, I went for the cheaper 85mm some time back. And I think you're right, the 85mm is a great balance of focal lengths. I got the Sony 135mm and often have to look for an excuse to use it, as I often end up going to the 85mm. When you mentioned the way your 85mm focuses, it made me feel better about my purchase decision. I saw in a few TH-cam videos that the "cheap" 85mm from Sony focuses the quickest. But glad you were able to make it work for that special image quality you mentioned. My favorite lens from Sony right now is the 50mm 1.2.
Great video Tom. I've bought the Sony 85mm f.1.8 for portrait photography and was thinking of getting the 50mm as well, but I managed it all with the 85mm. Lately I've used it in a client video - for the exact same phenomenon you're describing - the background seems closer. Instead of the 35mm prime that I'd usually put on, I took the 85mm... Since we were in a corridor that had at least 15 meters behind the subject, the lens and the camera setup gave us quite nice visual appeal of that (boring) background.
@@tombuck Haha, stunning is a strong word when describing the industrial warehouse look. But now when you wrote that, I realized I could've placed a practical light here and there. Always something to learn :-)
5:41 You're wrong, Tom. If you crop the 24mm image to give the same field of view, the DOF will be the same. The *perceived* DOF from the wider lens is greater, because you frame things differently, and the relative distances between near and far objects in the image are different (as you demonstrated in the next bit).
Great video! Did you try testing a 70-200 f/2.8 rather than an f/4 zoom? The result would be a tad closer to the prime although not identical ofcourse.
I'm currently thinking of picking up the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. Never, ever thought I'd be looking for a lens beyond 50 or 56mm. The shots you can get really are amazing!
I just make a few small adjustments in Final Cut Pro, but nothing too crazy. I did make a free preset of you want to try it: himynameistom.com/downloads
That would've been a great comparison! I just don't have a 2.8 on hand to try it right now. Speaking form experience, it'll definitely look better than f4, but there's still a pretty big difference between 2.8 and 1.8. I've used some super nice 70-200 lenses and they're truly fantastic. But the dedicated 85 is on another level for this specific focal length. If you don't plan to use it too often, I think a 70-200 zoom could fit the bill quite nicely, but if you plan to use 85mm often, then a dedicated lens is the way to go.
Definitely have an 85mm on my list of lenses to get next. I've had the Sony 85mm 1.8 in my cart for months hahaha! It would fit well with my 35mm and 50mm.

Great video. I work with a few people who are obsessed with 85mm interview shots. I much prefer using a 50 or a 24. IMHO 50 gives that intimate feel without too much break from the backdrop or impressionist bokeh everything. 24 feels like a person or subject in their environment even when cranked to 1.4f. Just my preference. Keep the lens stuff coming. Give us a Macro lens video.
For my corporate work the 85 is king for interviews, because you don't have resources (time, money, crew) to be worrying about backgrounds. The small angle of view and shallow DOF at say f/2.8 or 3.5 mean you only need to find a small patch of background that's going to work, and you have a nice-looking interview with a non distracting background.
Ahhh, I see the old "gaff tape to keep the round thing from rilling out of the shot" trick in action! Nice ;) Also, I assume the aperture changes at the beginning of the video are courtesy of the Sony remote? Thanks for these thoughts on the 85! I loved mine when I was using Nikon full-frame long ago and far away.
Gaff tape has a million and one uses! The intro was 4K120 of me just turning the camera on/off and then cutting out the part where my hand was in the frame 😁
Great video as always! but i am confused on something, i have always heard that 85mm lenses are only for portraits or similar images. however, is it good for general purpose video?
I use it all the time! When they say it’s good for portraits, usually that means shallow depth of field and a pleasing, non-distorted look for the subject. Those same things apply to video 👍
For me it was a 105mm. Had 35 and 50 - which is basically all I needed but I wanted a third, longer lens for headshots and/or background obliteration. Went to my local camera store and I tried an 85mm 1.4, 105mm 1.4, 135 1.8 and 300mm f2.8... I ended up jumping between 85 and 105 but in the end decided for the 105 and haven't regret my decision since. I basically shoot exclusively with 35 and 105 nowadays. Haven't put my 50mm onto my camera for 2 years - not even once! Only 35 or 105!
I love this. I think you hit on a really important point: you've got to go with what works for you. I might like 85mm, but 105 is better for you. Definitely important to test and try as much gear as possible when deciding.
As an antique camera builder and antique lens collector, I'd like to point out that the reason the Zeiss is better at f4 is that all lenses are not as good at their "limits" as they are stepping away from them. so the zoom lens is on its limits (f4) whereas the Zeiss is far away from its limits giving a far superior result. also, the Zeiss has superior optics than the f4 because it's easier and cheaper to make a prime lens than a zoom lens. so a good prime lens is always way better than a zoom lens in terms of quality. Great video once again.
Great video, why not the 135mm GM? Such a unique lens for unique times. Great lens for dog photography wrestling matches. Great social distance lens 😂Compression is unbelievable. Wow Tom I remember when you just started the channel I left you a message saying i know your gonna go far and look at you now. Cheers 🍻 bud, stay humble and keep those videos coming. Best wishes
Thanks for sticking around so long! And yes the 135 is definitely something I'd love to have at some point. I think the reason I opted for the 85 is that, currently, 135 would be just a bit too tight in a lot of situations for me.

Yes! 1.2 is amazing.
I prefer zoom lenses. primes are locked in and sure they are better at what they do, but i need the versatility i get from zooms. and i don't need to pack around as many lenses.
Totally depends on your workflow. When it comes to all around versatility, a zoom is tough to beat.
Never thought about using an 85mm lens on my Sony a6400 before. I will rent one and experiment with it soon.
It'll be fun! on the crop sensor, it'll be more like a 135(ish)mm lens, which means you'll have even more reach.
Love the video aesthetic!
Thank you!
Man I love that Sony FX3. Thanks Tom for making me spend over 4 grants on a new camera! How dare you :D
We need to get Tom to 100K!!
I approve this message.
Your puns are the best thing ever
love my 85mm Batis. 2nd prime of mine (purchases highly influenced by Peter L ...ha!)
Yep, he’s to blame for my purchase as well.
35mm, 85mm, 400mm are my fav lenses
85mm talk before sony 85mm f1.2. I feel like it will come next week or month. Because shops lowered the price of all 85mm
Oh I didn't know there were rumors of a new one! I bet it'll be awesome and expensive 😁
Have this lens coming in on loan today actually!
Oh nice! I'm sure it'll be super fun.
Notifications gang checking in
The Dad jokes make this video haha
I use 70-200 F2.8 to sorta-kinda get the same results.
2.8 would definitely get pretty close.
We need a video of his greatest puns. 😀
It would be 1.5 seconds long. 😉
Great video but more importantly...which Funko Pop is that? As a piano player would love to get one.
It’s Gene from Bob’s Burgers 👍
The batis has lens stabilization which is worth noting..
That's true. I think it helps, but truthfully I think my cameras' stabilizers do most of the heavy lifting.
I’d love to see this vs sigma 85mm f1.4
Tom, there are multiple things to cover in your channel, but believe me, we are waiting RCP II related topics :-) We have been waiting today for new video :-(
And you'll get it when he's good and ready.
There’s lots to cover with the RCP, but I also like other things as well. There’s also only so much I want to share with the beta firmware since it could change for the official release next week 👍
Awesome video. You remind me of Paul Rudd in Antman lol
Being able to swap lenses on cameras opens up a limitless world of emptying my wallet. Also potential, to be sure.
Advise to rent your desired focal lengths from a local gear shop first to see if the first date will be a hit. 💸
Yes! Testing and renting lenses is really important. Something that looks awesome for someone else might now work at all for what you need.
Sigma 105 1.4 sigma art is the best oh and 85 1.2 GM isnt released
Saving up and hope to buy the sigma 105 someday. I still shot with the kit lense and a6400 for my Instagram at @metasploit_studios.
