Wow, this is awesome. No magic, he actually PROVES his statements by using actual photos. I now understand the Histogram quite well. I used to be stamped by it, especially where it would show red, blue and green colour when the image doesn't have those colours. Am using Affinity photo and this tutorial has made me to incorporate the Histogram especially for images that are challenging to correct.

I am a newcomer to Affinity Photo, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that it has, besides histograms, a number of extremely useful scopes that I have been using for years in my film and video work. However, there was one of which I had no knowledge, the "Power Spectral Density" scope. You my friend, seem to be the only photographer on TH-cam willing to give a go at explaining this tool. I was so impressed that I immediatley subscribed to your channel. Anyway, I am watch your tutorial now in May of 2020, and I'm curious whether of not you have discovered any new uses for this scope. I'd love to know. Meanwhile I hope to look at more of videos. Thanks so much!

@@chrispwilliams6297 Thanks so much for your quick reply. I've just watched a tutorial you made on doing sharpening using LAB space. When Photoshop first came out, one did much more photo manipulating using color channels rather than layers. I used to do all of my sharpening using the LAB space, then, over the years I got away from doing so. Your video on subject, has reminded me again why it's such a great tool. Also, several of my friends are now using LAB space for toning their color grades in DaVinci Resolve.
Keith Dennis glad your finding the tutorials useful. further to my last reply the PSD scope is useful when using the FFT denoise filter (Fast Fourier Transform) . This is a tool for removing fixed pattern noise as found in Astro photography or even on scans of real photos. The scanner introduces fixed pattern noise in the capture process.
I also remember my older canon digital cameras suffered from FPN and the scope would have been useful then.
If I can find some Astro examples or old canon shots, I will set up a tutorial on this, cheers

Chris, thanks for this great explanation. I noticed, though, at about the 4:33 mark you had a minor slip-up citing the white RGB values as 000, not the 255 values that they are. Otherwise, you really helped me understand AF’s Scopes panel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Walt Szymanski thanks for raising this Walt. I was referring to the white balance of the image not the colour white. I should have explained more. If the white balance was off we would see unequal values under the RGB info either end of the RGB info. A perfectly white balanced image would have equal or at least very close values if the white balance was taken from that spot.
But you are right in as much pure white is 255.255.255 and black is 0.0.0. As a side note, In the real world I would avoid these extreme levels as i have issues when i come to print. E.g. Having pure white on your image can result in no ink hitting your paper. This can look ugly when viewed from the side. For high key, not such an issue as that is the look you are going for.

I'm having a pretty basic problem here: when I go down down in my tools on the right margin, I have Adjustments, and I have Exposure, but when I click there, it doesn't give me sliders, it gives me a menu of alternatives from -1 stop to +2 stops.
Additionally, whenever I open up one of the various options like Gradient Map or Invert, it automatically applies a default effect rather than allowing me to tinker within a submenu, and this is annoying.
Anybody know how to fix this?
Chris, thank you for your Affinity Photo tutorials. I have a request. There are a considerable number of Adobe Lightroom tutorials related to editing astrophotographs. Would you please show us how to approach astrophotographs using Affinity Photo?

yes, they have been keeping up with the os updates. __ I am using High Sierra and Affinity... no problems,
You have the black between the couler's. is why you have black at the top.
