    I’ve never learned to type the home row method. Since I was young I ignored the things my teacher taught me on how to properly type. I made my own method of typing and it isn’t index fingers or hunt and pec, etc. It’s just a style that I felt comfortable with and by now I’m pretty good at it and my personal best wpm is 115. I feel like accuracy is a big thing I need to focus on as well.

    Aiming for at least 98% accuracy every time have really gained me huge result just within a month. Able to do 100wpm on more regular basis than just a once in a blue moon occurrence. Accuracy should be the top priority if you really want to type faster and be actually applied irl day to day typing tasks and not just for races. Speed should be a byproduct of typing very efficiently.

    I am struggling with the hitting letters with different fingers and I notice how I make more mistakes when I don't do it. It's pretty easy to press the letter c with the index in a word like "because" and the middle finger for other words but I have a difficult time with the combination of L and O as in the word "follow". I try to use the ring finger for the O and the pinky for the L but it feels really unnatural and I have to move my hand a lot. What fingers are you using for this combination?

  • @KeidonKelley

    I agree with chak, When I type, I don't use home row the way I was taught, I don't always stay on home row, for example when typing home row, I type home, and now my left middle finger is on e and my right index is on m and my right ring finger is on o so then my left hand is tilted towards r and w, I am no longer on the home row, I then adjust from there.

    Left middle for; e, d, x and r.
    Left ring for; w,s and z.
    Left pinky for; a, caps and q.
    Right index; u, y, m, n, j and h
    Right middle; I, k and ,
    Right ring; o, l, . and occasionally p
    Right pinky; ;, / and occasionally p
    I also think the home row method is wrong because the human pinky can’t reach that far.
    Oh yeah and also either thumb is used for space bar.

My speed improves when I let my subconscious mind do the typing and reading, not my conscious mind. Because everytime I consciously do the typing I ended up making mistakes because i became conscious of what I do. paraphrased understanding of vielle’s response:
      “i would’ve placed first, had i only changed my typing style a bit because that adds up (makes an impact) over time. some people get an over-reliance on their index fingers, as opposed to their other fingers. with some fast typists, you’ll see them moving their hands a lot; what’s happening there is that they’re actually just moving their index fingers, and the rest of the fingers just kinda follow along, thereby giving more authority to their other fingers. that’s why some pianists transfer pretty well to mechanical typing, and maybe have better habits. so that’s something that i’d say might’ve been my observation, or my key to success in the competition.” :)
      personally, i feel like i get the gist of what he’s saying, but wrapping my head around that concept is a little bit difficult so im interested to observe his style some more and see how that idea plays out physically.

    For my personal experience as a typist, there are two ultimate ways to improve fast typing skills: (1) Put rest your fingers at the home keys. Once you start, you can easily type the other keys correctly and almost no error. (2) Do not look at the keyboard almost at all times during typing. That will boost your confidence in fast typing. You cannot quickly type if you look at the keyboard then to the computer screen and keyboard again, just to make sure that you are typing the right keys.

      How long did it take you? I type alot more than you do and have been for last few years due to job being in IT and prior to this (even though I'm 23), but my wpm is probably only 40, with no improvement. I make alot of mistakes and have been over the years so then i have now gone to learning the home row method to learn the keyboard to not make them mistakes, but I am not sure the home row method even though it gives accuracy your hands feel weird and constraint/ restricted. I just don't know how to improve if i use my own method i make mistakes even though I shouldn't be since for last probably 8 years I've been typing like daily. I don't know what it is I really want to improve the other week I spent around probs 2 and half hour and other days 1 and half hours like every day or so to learn the home row. I need guidance i found your comment interesting about typing normal way, but then how shall I remove my mistakes ?

    • @rayhanalam3101
      @rayhanalam3101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok an update o didn't give up and now I am making much less mistakes, my fingers don't feel uncomfortable either typing with 10 fingers. It's like at first I was spreading ice cold button on a bread price and my fingers were the bread that was breaking up due to the residence. Now it feels more like the butter is warmer and my bread and fingers are moving with it.
      My biggest lesson to everyone is if your using these websites the most important is don't do 2 hours and then stop and forever. Carry on to 5 hours and you will definitely see the difference. Now my wpm is still around 25 to 30 but on the keybr website i am hitting 40 plus, and have unlocked half the keyboard. Another important thing don't rely on one website if you lose focus or start to do bad go onto type racer and have a race and come back or use nitro type or money type which is really good just type a paragraph and come back you don't need to unlock all fingers just think and type you will make it easier for yourself in the future when unlocking new fingers. I will continue to update you but yes don't lose hope after first 3 hours after that is when the critical time starts.

    I think the concept of the "home row" is a place to start for beginning typists in order to learn the placement of the keys. I rarely set my fingers on the home row anymore, except for when I'm taking a break to compose a thought. If I'm typing copy that I'm reading from a printed or handwritten page, my fingers never stop moving. But then again, I taught myself how to type when I was 8 years old on my grandmother's manual typewriter.

    • @Selectrolux
      @Selectrolux 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@daskeyboard My hands move and hover over the keyboard. I do find that the 6,T,G,B row and the 7,Y,H,N row is the cutoff between what keys I'll press with my left hand and right hand, which is definitely a product of having learned "touch typing."

    • @basicforge
      @basicforge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I consciously think about it my fingers will be in the home row. Once I start typing and I’m no longer actually thinking about typing I’m pretty sure that my hands are actually adaptively hovering near the home row position. Then my fingers aren’t really resting on the surface of the keyboard, but my fingers touch the keys mostly only when pressing keys.

    Just religiously hammer the accuracy into your brain and fingers and you can go however the f*** fast you want.

    what I really think helps is accuracy because if you aren't accurate then you will press backspace a million times which just strains your hand
    I usually use keyboard short cuts, for example, control backspace(option instead of control on mac) and my ring finger for the backspace
    if you practice a lot on websites, that can also help, and writing stories can help
    however if you just typed really fast your heart is probably beating so you should not try to type again until you have waited a few minutes
    if you take my advice you could achieve a top speed of 161 wpm like me

    I've started up again with the home row method, because I noticed I almost didn't use my pinky and ringfingers... One thing I've now learned is to use the left shift key waaaay more, which makes my right hand much faster and it doesn't have to contort itself so much anymore to get the shift key AND the + sign for example. After relearning to use ALL my fingers, I see myself switching back to a more fluid (non-home row) style of typing though.
