They used this rally as a test for the upcoming Paris-Cape Town, the crossing of 10 countries. Now the Saudi Dakar rally is as big as the Pharaohs rally used to be. Fairly, it's just a bit bigger, but still all rally within just one country.
There is no reason for it. I believe they never do; they have cancelled the next stage but never stopped the rally. It may sound shocking, but it's nothing extraordinary. When a race as dangerous as this involves several hundreds of competitors, something can go wrong for somebody.
