I love to hike but haven't since April; I'm taking care of my mother, who's about to begin chemo. These lovely, quiet videos don't rectify my isolation, but they do give me a lot of vicarious pleasure. Thank you.
Nice hike and video! This is on my husband's and my bucket list. We love WV and have back packed in Dolly Sods. I have that lantern. It's very light and nice to have at times. Love the views you saw and enjoy your videos!
Thanks for tuning in. I have a more recent video up of the Roaring Plains from about two months ago. It’s one of my favorite spots to backpack. I selfishly hope it remains as a lightly trafficked area and that it doesn’t end up being overused like the sods. I’m probably not helping by putting it on TH-cam, but it’s too beautiful not to share. I just hope people respect it and leave it the way they found it.
Hey Guys!! Glad to have found your channel. We enjoy meeting fellow TH-camrs and explorers! Looks like some beautiful hiking! This is the first video we have seen on this place - looks great! Definitely going on our list for when we hit the road fulltime. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to more of your adventrues! 💙Terry and Terri
Roaring Plains is one of the last hidden gems. It’s right next to Dolly Sods which is packed all the time, but somehow Roaring Plains is still low key. Definitely a cool spot.
Didn’t realize you guys were from Ohio as well. Really enjoyed your video…I just about went here last week but went to the cranberry wilderness instead. Subbed!
Great video again. Thanks for putting together some more content. The first backpacking trip I took with my wife was to the dolly sods, and this looks every bit as beautiful. I was going to put Seneca rocks as my first trip of 2023 but the roaring plains may have taken its place
Roaring Plains is a hidden gem. I honestly think it may be better than Dolly Sods. Way less people and feels way more remote. MIGHT be my favorite trip of 2022. Thanks for watching!
Great video and the pictures of the mountain views were beautiful. (And what a Knight in Shining Armor for taking that extra chair for Sarah). I only day hiked up there and started on the trail you finished on. So, I never got to see those views. When I used to take spaghetti on a trip, I used one of those Chef Boyardee dinners that came in a box. Came with everything for the meal. Fairly cheap and tasted pretty good. If you go up the road from the Laneville Cabin toward Bear Rocks, before the intersection where you turn left toward Bear Rocks or go straight to Route 28 near the Smoke Hole Caverns on the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River, you come to a gated road on the right side. That road leads to a trail that goes to the Eastern Continental Divide. Great place to camp! You actually look down on Seneca Rocks. There are some great views out there. When I was going on a one night, or even a weekend hike I used to take hamburgers and hot dogs. Freeze the meat in a freezer bag, keep it in the bottom of the cooler, then bury it in the pack until getting to the camping spot, then breakout the handy dandy Tupperware container and put the meat in it, then put it in the stream with a rock on top of it. And don't smash the buns!...lol. And I did all of this before you were born! (Reference to your remark that I had been to Seneca Creek 8 years before you were born). Ron
I’ll have to check out the spot that overlooks Seneca Rocks. I’m thinking about doing a 4 day 3 night West Virginia trip next year in Monongahela to prep for Colorado. Maybe I’ll see if I can work that into the route. I’m looking forward to the colder weather so I can bring steak and bacon lol
Hey guys! Just recently ran onto your channel while searching for Dolly Sods hiking videos to vicariously live through. I can not express enough how terrific it's been following you guys from one hiking adventure to the next thus far! I grew up in far western MD and spent quite a bit of time up on the Sods camping and exploring with family and friends when I was a teen. Being a teenager in the 80's had some perks, one being when it came to areas like Dolly Sods, it was still one of WV's best kept secrets and we seemed to always have the Sods plateau to ourselves! Unfortunately, since then I became a quadriplegic from an accident, hence the, "living vicariously through videos'' I mentioned above, and can no longer access the juicy areas where that beautiful wilderness hides those breathtaking views! Your incredible video/editing, and informative skills are second to non and I just wanted ya to know how much you're actually doing and the service you're providing for so many folks and for so many reasons my friend. Thank you for that and in advance as I look forward to joining along on all of your future hikes whenever and wherever they may be! Best regards, Craig
Taken those paths and trails so many times i felt like i was there....Thanks Great Video! BTW the first nights campsite I have stayed in twice. Once in 2009 and the most recent in 2018. It was in 2018 I was solo, had just set up my tent and was sitting down to take a break when I looked up and down the rim trail there was a huge black bear staring at me from about 20 yards, the head was so big the ears looked tiny. I gave a loud yell and it rumbled through the woods and up towards the pipeline shaking the ground as it went.
I’ve done Roaring Plains, Dolly Sods, Spruce Knob and just got back from North Fork Mountain, video is going up tomorrow for that one. Somehow haven’t seen a bear yet lol, thanks for watching!
Keep backpacking the plains and I promise you will see a bear. ...but more incredibly in 2016 with an old HS buddy that i grew up with in Charleston, WV we were in the area i call "The Pines' where the old logging camp was as you crest the plateau on Roaring Plains trail. We were there for three days of dayhiking, a constant rain made things difficult so on the last night we decided to get up before day break and break camp get off the mountain early. Next morning as we were literally stuffing the last of our packs closed we heard a momma doe grunt, being from the hills of WV we did not pay attention to it, but less than a minute later she grunted again with what i can best describe as "Bad Intentions" My buddy looked ay me with wide eyes and said, "Was that for us?" and I said, "How could it, we have been hear for three days in a known camping area" Few seconds later the brush on the periphery of 'the pines' was rustling and I looked up and said, "Oh look it is a Fawn" and my Buddys said, "No it is not" and with that we both watch in utter and complete amazment as a Bobcat had a look of terror as a momma doe was on her hind legs with her front hoofs flailing like a bronco hot on the bobcats tail right through the middle of our campsite. It was over before it started, we looked at each other as if 'did we just see what we thought we saw?" and if you message me i will tell you and equally unbelievable incident that happend as we returned to our automobile at the parking lot on Bonner Mountain Rd as my friend and i returned to our car after descending Flatrock Run Trail. This info I will not share publicly.
I'd like dehydration videos. I've been playing with it. Fruit leather is easy. I use ground turkey with Manwich, dehydrates and rehydrates better than beef and will not go rancid as fast. Hey fellow coffee snob, I found those filters on Amazon so I can bring my favorite freshly ground beans.
I love to hike but haven't since April; I'm taking care of my mother, who's about to begin chemo. These lovely, quiet videos don't rectify my isolation, but they do give me a lot of vicarious pleasure. Thank you.
I wish the best for your mother, thanks for watching.
I admire your sense of responsibility to your mother. I pray she beats the cancer. Ron

Love the Roaring Plains, one of my favorites within reasonable driving distance of OH.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoy the videos and I really hope that it helps out!
I seek out trails like that. I think I'll hit it this winter. Thanks for the video, I'm subscribed.
It’s a great spot, you’ll like it. Thanks for the sub!
Hell yeah dude! The miles don't come easy but the views are big. Nicely done, lots of good b roll throughout.
I’ll never be as cinematic as yours, I don’t have the patience lol. Plus I’m just too loud to shut up 😂
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking your trip reports are great 👍

Awww that was sweet surprising Sarah with the chair. Super nice!
Haha yeah she loved it. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Do a map of trails that you used on this trip you could share?
If you have a GPS app I could send you the GPX file

We haven’t had any issues with beef, bread crumbs seem to help a lot.
Dehydrated trail burritos are a good option. Rehydrate and eat with tortillas and hot sauce packets.
We were actually discussing this, but beans don’t really treat my stomach well so I’d probably have to do something different lol
What chest pack do you use? Thanks
Hillpeople Gear kit bag. They have tons of different options depending on what size you need. I would HIGHLY recommend.
