The Lems primal is very comfortable but its downside is durability. The shoe fabric frays easily even with just normal walking around. Would definitely try out the xero.
I love how in depth this review is! It's hard to find reviews comparing different brands of minimalist shoes since most people online are talking about discovering their first pair of minimalist shoes. The note about the toebox is great, I wish I could see a lineup of the toeboxes of all of the big barefoot shoe brands because i have pretty wide feet as well and I struggle to find shoes that don't squish my toes. Especially for womens shoes which, even in barefoot brands, tend to run narrower (I would buy mens shoes but unfortunately my foot is much too small for me to fit into any of the mens sizes that are available)
This channel reviews a lot of different barefoot shoes: th-cam.com/video/qJg8kKK8Kqs/w-d-xo.html They have a few videos where they do in depth reviews so it might be helpful.
Thank you for this video and the others were you review minimalist footwear. They have all been very helpful. Like you, for me the toe box width is critical and my new Lem's Primal 2's are fantastic in that area. Before I saw this review I tried one pair of Xero shoes and they were too narrow for me. Watching your videos has now saved me considerable time and shipping costs. :-) Thanks!
I'm literally healing from a big toe injury and couldn't wear shoes for awhile, and my Prios feel tight now as well... wild! I ordered the Primal 2's this morning, so now I feel better about my purchase, thanks dude.
Never tried Xero Prio, but Lems Primal 2 are so comfortable that I often forget that I have any shoes on! Honestly, I also find the grey ones really good looking too.
I have both, like both. Lems is slightly more comfortable but rubber sole is softer and tends to wear much faster. I have had no problems with Lems in summer heat.
Thank you for the comment that LEMS has a wider toe box than the Xero Prio! I have super wide feet and now want to add Correct Toes, so looking for the widest toe box shoe available.
I used Lems Primal Zen for 10 months and it my favourite shoe. I bought Xero Prio and discovered that the toe box is smaller compared to the Lems. Thank you for the review.
You wont be disappointed lems is the way to go in my opinion, they have quality shoes and quality customer service. The waterproof boulder boot is awesome for winter up north here
This video is how I found your channel, but I love all of the strength and mobility drills you demonstrate. I have learned a lot. Thanks Matt, for teaching us better movement patterns. I feel like barefoot shoes definitely help with that
Much of it simply depends on the foot. If you’re one like me that has never found a shoe to have too wide a toe box, assuming the rest of the shoe fits, then the lems primal is for you. It is the only pair of shoes, even other lems don’t fit the bill, that I can say truly allow my foot to splay over a rock, or just let my toes spread freely and fully when walking.
Yeah. I love my Lems, but it'd be nice to be able to get that width in a sneaker with a thinner sole. Kind of weird that no one's really combining these two key barefoot criteria.
I have been looking for a good review between these two, and you nailed it. Will be using your link because of your videos true value! Thanks keep it up!
I appreciate these videos. Thank you so much! Prior to watching your videos, I was thinking of trying out Vivobarefoot shoes, but they honestly seem way too minimalist for my needs. I walk on cement 99% of the time and I think for comfort purposes, I probably should go for a shoe that has a thicker sole for reduced impact.
I would love an up to date video comparing Lems and Xero and Altra. I want a shoe that would be good for light hiking without a back pack that you could also go for a trail run in. So wide toe box, durable sole, zero drop and feel the ground. I have used Atras and Lems for years. I like both of them but the soles tend to wear out in a few years.
I live in Japan, where it is impossible for me to find a shop where I can find a variety of minimal running shoes to try on, much less any shoes for my size 29 feet. So I waited until a recent trip to the US where I found a shop that carried a variety of zero drop shoes. I had tried the Xero in a 28 and while it was too small, I thought I would like them. But when I tried them against the Lems and other shoes the Lems were the clear winner for my feet. I bought the only pair of 29s they had and now at least I know that is the right size for me so I will order more in the future. I also have a few pairs of Altra Lone Peaks that I can source here a couple of hours from my home. I have finally come to the realization that I cannot wear any shoes that are not zero drop. My knees, hips, back, and neck all suffer from shoes with a raised heel. I've been a runner for more than fifty years and I started on flat shoes. My running really had to take a back seat when it got to the point where I could no longer find any shoes that were flat enough for my running form. I would buy a pair based on fit but the drop always caused injuries and eventually I had to stop running. I am so glad to have some options now. Either of these shoes would be fine for me now but I only bought the ones that I liked more and I could not be more happy. So far I only run in Altras and Merrells, saving the Lems for walking around the city. But when I get more they will become shoes that I run in as well. Zero drop is the only kind of show I can wear.
This review was really helpful, thank you! Related to the video - it would be also helpful to hear how you managed your recovery from the broken big toe (I recently broke mine too and I’m interested in how to rebuild foot strength and mobility)
Lems primals are the only shoe I’ve found that truly knows what a wide toe box should be as well as vertical space for the big toe, flexibility. My big toe likes to come up and gets real mad when restricted.
I agree. Also the only sneaker I know of that allows the big toe to splay properly. I really love mine. And unlike the video maker, I haven't found Vivos to be wide enough for me. My foot is a Euro 9 and my toes are just over 4.5 inches fully splayed.
i also wear Xero prio, But after start wearing Chines beach shoes for running, i feel like xero prio not wide enough for my feet. But why xero not made wide toe box shoes? even if there Alpine version is not wide enough. That's a shame
Great video! A similar thing happened to me. I injured my right big toe, and after the injury, I had to find shoes with wider toe boxes. I'm now wearing Altras, but those Lems look nice.
I really like your reviews. I got a cheap pair of minimalist shoes just to see if I like the style. They've been great for my foot pain. I've been debating a few different shoes for a while and after watching your videos I feel a lot more informed. I plan on getting a pair of primal 2's. Unfortunately, they're out of stock now though.
Hello and thank you for your great reviews! I want to buy the Lem's; the site does not offer half sizes and I wanted your opinion. I wear an 8.5 in shoes but for my running shoes I usually go a full size up to avoid toe injuries. Do you feel these are true to size and ordering my usual size of 8.5 will work perfectly? I actually don't plan to wear these for running just for my day to day since I am transitioning to barefoot shoes with wider toe boxes. I own the Lem's Boulder Summit boot and went a half size up on those and they fit PERFECTLY but since this shoe doesn't offer half sizes I am torn between getting my usual size or going a full size up, but I don't want them to be huge on me. I appreciate any help you can give with sizing 😊
I do think I’m going to go with the Xero HFS cuz it’s summer and they seem more what I’m looking for too overall. Maybe in the winter I’ll get some Lems primal 2 and even some either Xero or Lems boots for winter. It seems like from your reviews your preferred ones are the xeros and Lems overall for comfort and preference and basically I think your faves would be xeros if the toe box still fit : ) anyways..I guess there’s no perfect shoe but with the price I had to see what was hopefully the overall best option for me to try.. thanks for the video reviews they were super helpful!
Finally someone who addresses the shoe width of each shoe. I have very wide feet and I was kind of leaning towards Xero, thanks for the last minute save. The Vivo are narrow as well for me as well. I wish you could tell us which is the shoe with the widest toe box, even if it's not minimalistic as people keep pointing out the Altra sneakers?
I have researched the Lems primal 2. They have a toe spring. Would you still reccomend it?. Have you had issues with your feet or toes so far because toe springs arent that good from what I heard. Should we be worried about toe springs in lems primal 2?.
Thanks for reviewing these two specific shoes. I have been wearing the Lems Primal 2 for a few years now and love them, but was curious if they were the widest choice and it seems they are. If there are a few companies that make minimalist sandals I'd love for you to review them, as I'm currently in need of replacing my Tevas and would like to switch to a minimalist style sandal. I use them for every day walking as well as hiking on various terrain.
I just bought a pair of Terraflexs a month or so ago. I wear a size 7 1/2 women’s and their 7 1/2’s are roomy. They are fabulous! I wear them around my rural property. They have good grip. For more rugged hiking I like their Xcursions a lot! And I have the Prios too which are more for flat and city walking.
How come you haven’t compared vivos lite 3s with Xero HTS or even vivos and Xeros in general? I can’t decide what to try..I’m leaning towards Xero HTS except you mentioned the toe box is smaller…and Lems don’t seem very minimalist though I like the look of them and they seem like something I’d wear. Plus another person commented on toe springs in the Lems whatever that means and just the fact that there’s less ground feel, but maybe that’d be better for working at the store and going for walks on sidewalks. But then for my more everyday shoe I can’t decide between xeros and vivos..leaning towards xeros but the toe box 😭haha..or I saw some not so positive feedback from all of these companies but I’d still rather try a more natural movement minimalist shoe over my other options but it’s also not cheap so..help!
Can You or someone here please suggest a solution for me? I've worn the primal 2 for 3 years and the outer shape of the left shoe has lost it's nice smooth rounded shape between my 2nd and 3rd toe - it looks dented. Is there maybe a stiffener type insert I may could glue to the inside or what? Any ideas? It's not affecting their use - it just looks bad. Thanks
Lems look they're made better with the thicker treads and firmer fabrics and leather. Lems business shoes looks more like a typical business shoe than Xero which is a dark gray and not black and has no shine to them. I think it comes to looks and rather or not you'll be walking on hot pavement all day that will determine which brand you will go for. I bought the Excursion by Xero for I am a hiker and want wetness protection from whatever might come my way. I think when I am ready to buy a running shoe I will choose Lem because I tend to land more on my heel and I am having trouble training myself to stop that.
Super nice review however I can’t find the xero prios any where ! At least here in Los Angeles ! Not even at REI . Are you sure it’s still being manufactured ? Thank you 🙏🏼
It would be fair to Lems if you made it clear that they make many other styles, including the 9-5, which is made of leather and looks like a toe-cap dress shoes and the Boulder Boot.
We'll be looking at their other shoes in the future. :-) This video is just about two similar shoes from different minimalist shoe companies. Didn't want to get into discussing full line-ups.
Great video Matt, think about buy a minimalist shoe soon or later, and this kind of video really help! I also have 2 questions for you :) I run with bare foot since a couple day, need a bit of adaptation but the the feeling is great. Is it something bad? Can you please tell me the brand of your pants? He seems perfect or my need ;) (sorry for my English, French here!) Keep the good work 💪
In this video I'm wearing lululemon In Mind pants with thermals underneath. I wasted years searching for mobile thicker pants. I never found them. Then I realized I could just pair good thermals with thinner pants and maintain hip mobility and warmth. More on pants here: th-cam.com/video/58qFDdP3fLE/w-d-xo.html
Great review! Which shoes do you recommend for traveling in South East Asia for a jungle hike and to also be able to walk around cities? I only want to travel with 1 pair of shoes and sandals
From these two shoes, I'd just go with the one that fits your foot better. I've used both to hike and walk around cities. Lems is slightly thicker stack height, which can be nice, and I think for hiking its tread may be slightly better. But I had also used the Xeros for the same purposes without issue. If the jungle hike will be wet and muddy, then maybe the Xero Prios. I think the Prio would probably dry faster than the Lems.
I live in SEA and have been hiking a couple of times in the national parks. I would recommend shoes with thicker soles and water proved, as the jungle paths could be very wet and slippery.
I have both in the black color, I like both but I prefer Xero's Prio. Lems are comfy but their outward sole is too thick for my liking. Though Lems have a wide toe box, they are narrow compared the Prios wich have a perfectly wide toe box matching my foot and are more comfortable in that regard.
Xero shoes the fit is off for me, it take a long time for customer service process my order, can't wait to have my money back, they gave a sale and now it takes 2 weeks to return email or phone call...so 2 weeks to get the shoes since they send it and now 2 weeks waiting to return them plus the shipping played 14 dollars shipping and now return shipping who know how much it will cost? i Learned a huge lesson never order from them!!!
I am just getting into minimalist shoes. I am a hairdresser so I stand all day would minimalist shoes be ok for me I do stand on a mat all day but concrete floors otherwise
If you're standing all day long, it may be tough. I used to work in a warehouse during a summer in my late teens, and walking for 6 hours a day on concrete seemed to demand thicker soles.
Really depends on your definition of "normal" and where you're wearing the shoes. Check out my review on Vivobarefoot vs. Softstar. Softstars have the absolute thinnest "normal-ish" looking shoe I've tried so far.
Hey Matt! Appreciate your topics and analysis. I’m interested in your thots about wearing minimalist shoes for activities like tennis & pickleball. Also, thots about Vibram five fingers. Thanks! :)
Minimal shoes strengthen the feet so after some time they no longer hurt and your body starts to function properly. The reason your feet hurt is likely because the muscles and tendons are weak due to not being exercised (assuming you normally wear cushioned shoes and don't spend much time walking barefoot).
You have to wear them for months. My wife and I switched a few years ago and it was weird and made our feet sore at first, but now we can't wait to go walking in these shoes (and honestly don't walk in anything else!). The Lems actually have a good amount of cushion while retaining ground feel, so they are a good place to start.
The Lems primal is very comfortable but its downside is durability. The shoe fabric frays easily even with just normal walking around. Would definitely try out the xero.
I own both Lems and xero shoes. The xero fall apart 5 mths later with very little wear. Lems are wonderful

I wear the Prios and find they are wider than I need. You might give them a try. I wear a 7 1/2 women’s and the Xero size 7 1/2 is very roomy.

@@blankets1453 I also have the primal zens, and just purchased some prios.
I wish I saw this before I bought them. Oops
Thanks for this. I love my xero sandals, but I'm going with the lems for my work shoes because the colors go better with khakis.
You wont be disappointed lems is the way to go in my opinion, they have quality shoes and quality customer service. The waterproof boulder boot is awesome for winter up north here
Prio All-Day is good for that.

always rounded heel. 90 degrees heel gives you that hard skin among other problems, thank you for the review!

I bought two pairs of the vivo barefoot primus lite 2 best shoes I've ever had and they look way better than these two give you more how room too.
Toe room
I got the Lems years ago for a toe pain, and have worn every day. Love them
I would love an up to date video comparing Lems and Xero and Altra.

Been watching your channel for yrs, thank you for the great content! Finally ordered these Lems and used your affiliate code.👍🏼
For the. Zero shoe, I buy one size higher to fit my wide feet.
thanks for showing the shoes on your feet. only review i could find for lems with that. cheers
Finally a barefoot shoe reviewer who goes into detail.
i also wear Xero prio, But after start wearing Chines beach shoes for running, i feel like xero prio not wide enough for my feet. But why xero not made wide toe box shoes? even if there Alpine version is not wide enough. That's a shame

Hi you are a good youtuber :) thanks for helping my posture i really like to sleep now and it also helped with my constipation
Happy to help!
Which toe box is wider:
The vivos
Or the primal 2
?
What do you recommend for road running and walking? Would lems be a better transition? Or primus lites ? Primus trail fg ? Thanks !
Just what I wanted to know- difference between toe width. Thanks! Would be great to also know how the durability compares in your future shoe reviews.
I do think I’m going to go with the Xero HFS cuz it’s summer and they seem more what I’m looking for too overall. Maybe in the winter I’ll get some Lems primal 2 and even some either Xero or Lems boots for winter. I found the Prios to be wider than I needed. I think I have average width feet.
I have researched the Lems primal 2. They have a toe spring. Would you still reccomend it?. Have you had issues with your feet or toes so far because toe springs arent that good from what I heard. Should we be worried about toe springs in lems primal 2?.
I would get lems if you are transitioning from marketed shoes at least that's what I doing
BTW I know this comment was like 6 months ago
Another great in depth product review!
The Xero looks like 2 full sizes smaller than the lems When you held them together?😄
Hello again! Have you done a review of Xero Terraflex? A search says no, but you're my "go-to guy" for Xero reviews so I thought I'd ask :)
"A trip to Europe."
2020: hahahahaha
2021: Maybe. Just maybe.
You pronounce your last name like “shoe” and you review shoes. That is what is called cool
Hi wich one would you recomand for sprinting?
Can You or someone here please suggest a solution for me? I've worn the primal 2 for 3 years and the outer shape of the left shoe has lost it's nice smooth rounded shape between my 2nd and 3rd toe - it looks dented. Is there maybe a stiffener type insert I may could glue to the inside or what? Any ideas? It's not affecting their use - it just looks bad.
Thanks
Can you do a review by only toe box width?
Hey Matt, have you tried Altras? I am wondering what you think of them. I already have vivo lites and am waiting on my Lens primal 2s.
I haven't tried Altras but will put it on the list!
Hi Matt!
Have you got Vibram Fivefingers reviews compare to other barefoot brands? Thanks!
Yes more shoes reviews Thank you
You got it!
Super nice review however I can’t find the xero prios any where ! At least here in Los Angeles ! Not even at REI .
Are you sure it’s still being manufactured ?
Thank you 🙏🏼
Amazon or directly from Xero :)
Have you tried Suavs or Feiyu shoes? More minimalist shoes for review!
Would the Lems make good walking shoes? Do they have enough cushion to walk all day without being too fatigued?
Awesome video. Would be great to see your thoughts on the new Xero HFS
Same shape as the Prio so unlikely to be happy with them for the reason discussed in the video.
I did order them to try them but the toe boxes weren't wide enough for my fat feet. 😆
Nice shoes in Germany both are not so popular. Here people wear more Vivos or nimble toes...
Great video Matt, think about buy a minimalist shoe soon or later, and this kind of video really help!
I also have 2 questions for you :)
I run with bare foot since a couple day, need a bit of adaptation but the the feeling is great. Is it something bad?
Can you please tell me the brand of your pants? He seems perfect or my need ;)
(sorry for my English, French here!)
Keep the good work 💪
I'm curious to know what brand of pants too, I'm struggling to find some tapered ones like that which are a bit smarter than joggers.
I would have rather seen you compare these after wearing them for some time like you have in other video's.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Have the Prios held up well?
@@RachaelJohn They are holding up very well. I've been using them at work for the past 6 months.
Durability?
Xero shoes the fit is off for me, it take a long time for customer service process my order, can't wait to have my money back, they gave a sale and now it takes 2 weeks to return email or phone call...so 2 weeks to get the shoes since they send it and now 2 weeks waiting to return them plus the shipping played 14 dollars shipping and now return shipping who know how much it will cost? i Learned a huge lesson never order from them!!!
I haven’t tried Xero because I think they are ugly. I just can’t get into their look.
I got no style, I just want my feet to be comfortable 🤷🏽♂️
Awesome review!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can I get these shoes in the UK? if so what website? thank you
thanks for this vide
You're most welcome!
Crocs
Altra makes great zero drop shoes with a thicker sole
Can you do a review of ANI shoes?
Nice video!
Thanks!
What shoes have the thinnest sole and still look like normal shoes?
Really depends on your definition of "normal" and where you're wearing the shoes. Check out my review on Vivobarefoot vs. Softstar. Softstars have the absolute thinnest "normal-ish" looking shoe I've tried so far.
can you review the BARE-XF 210 V2's from inov-8?
I'll put it on my watch list. I had some INOV-8s before but eventually I realized the toe box wasn't wide enough for me.
Hey Matt! Appreciate your topics and analysis. I’m interested in your thots about wearing minimalist shoes for activities like tennis & pickleball. Also, thots about Vibram five fingers. Thanks! :)
Lems are wider at the toe box
Bom
vivo primus lite 2 better man
Idk how anyone can wear shoes with thin soles. They kill my feet
Minimal shoes strengthen the feet so after some time they no longer hurt and your body starts to function properly. The reason your feet hurt is likely because the muscles and tendons are weak due to not being exercised (assuming you normally wear cushioned shoes and don't spend much time walking barefoot).
@@christianlangfield9303 Truth!
Greedy companies won't do free exchanges
Xero shoes are the ugliest shoes going. Wish someone would point this out...
