    I used the flame cultivator in the mid 60’s. A great tool when used correctly

      Yes it is takes some trial and error to figure out the best setting on this rig!

    What keeps the corn from not being killed? This is the first time I've seen this done.

      The growing point is still in the ground so if you don’t wreck that you are just fine corn is in the grass family so if you mow it off when it’s knee high it will regrow ,on the other hand this flamer does not work very well in soybeans because their growing point is above ground!

    what about finger weeders on the cultivator? this seems like a bad year for getting steel into the fields due to weather, I hope conditions improve for you. thanks

      We have been using our time Weeders without the row tines in and it’s worked very very good when we have used them, we haven’t worked up any soybean ground lately due to the weather but we have gotten roughly 5/10ths on the majority of our farms over the weekend and are hoping to get through the soybeans with the John Deere 3 sweeps and Tine Weeders one more time!

      @@FehrsFarmingOrganic I just watched a video from ograins on weed control, and what he said reminded me of the complexity of playing three-dimensional chess, and I don't play chess. farming is hard enough, but choosing to farm organically is even more difficult, I understand equipment is expensive, and what works in one area won't do as well in others. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

      @@jonpeterson9733 absolutely, it’s always cool and interesting to see how other organic farmer take care or their crops in different parts of the world! Nobody knows everything and I appreciate the people who comment and discuss the different methods and the many different pieces of equipment people use to keeps their crops clean. Thanks for the comment!

      To hit on the finger weeders we have not tried them yet so can’t give you any advice on them!

      @@FehrsFarmingOrganic they have been around for a while, but I think they are more of a thing with vegetable growers, I seen a few grain farmers use them. they seem to do a good job of cleaning in row. now days the vast majority of weed control is done with a sprayer. when my grandfather farmed everybody used a cultivator. things have changed a lot since then, including cost. and to be honest, I don't know if they can be used without a robotic tracking system on a large scale or if GPS ok, anyways thanks once again for replying.

    About 3 years ago, around the year 2020, computer software got good enough that laser weeders are now being manufactured.
    Every few feet is a camera and a laser. The computer software directs a laser at almost all of the weed plants that it sees, and leaves almost all of the crop plants alone.
    As old flamers gradually need to get replaced, after about 50 years or so, flamers will gradually become mostly a thing of the past. Lasers are a little bit more fuel efficient than flamers, so when replacement time comes, they say that there is usually a little bit of financial bias toward laser weeding over using flamers.
    The government agricultural extention service can probably give more details. If not, there is always Google to go to. Ideally, knowledge should come from both sources of information. Up to a point, more information leads to better decision making.

    Groundspeed is slow and if it was mine, I would want a wider span boom, at least 80 feet.

      @FehrsFarmingOrganic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah this seemed to kill the weeds really good we had trouble with them not geting a good kill if we went faster in the bad spots ,we averaged about 13-14gallons of propane per acre and we are doing 60foot to match our planter tracks since they are 60 otherwise we would have to to 120ft to match and that would be too much if we were 16row we would maybe look at that

    I thought Organic was also meant to be better for the environment apart from being chemical free. How is burning Gas letting carbon go into the air better for the environment. Wouldn't a chemical free natural weed killer be better (Vinegar)

    • @nicholastaylor8590
      @nicholastaylor8590 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Organic is just a label in the grocery store. As far as vinegar goes it would work once and then you would have a field with a ridiculously useless acidity.

      There’s quite a bit of organic farming around here and it’s no secret that those farmers use much more fuel to control weeds so actually there’s a bigger environmental footprint. I’m in no way against organic but people need to know that it takes more trips through the field. Good job on the video and another way to control weeds is electrocuting them which is a sight to see at night.
