@@zachary8055 it’s probably due to rafe not having any self worth , him not having friends and his mom’s ex boyfriend calling him a freak even in front of his mom and his brother being imaginary and dead and the middle school my brother is a big fat liar really do prove this cause rafe never ever in his books mentions how he goes to art school and legit gets good grades the only one that does tell us that is Georgie and that really is sad

The movie moved away from the point of the original books, where the main character is in the wrong for a lot of the conflicts throughout the books, mainly caused by his childlike imagination. The movie put the school at fault for the main conflict and completely changing the story.
Edit: I hadn’t watched the full video before writing this, turns out I predicted one of this guy’s main points!

  • @dullsunrise8820

Growing up as someone who struggles mentally and with social situations, middle school was actually awful for me. I had no friends throughout elementary school, got a couple fake ones during middle school, and got bullied a whole ton. I struggled a lot in my classes, too, mainly due to anxiety. So when I was given the book, I immediately connected with Rafe and the overall themes and more depressing moments hit me personally.
Never knew it got a movie adaptation, and just hearing how they changed the plot for it pissed me off immensely.
At least the animated parts are cool.

I have an idea for how they could have improved this:
In the film, there’s a famous student who broke all the rules at his school (near the one Rafe goes to) and went down in history as a legend. This could serve as inspiration for operation R.A.F.E however it should still keep Rafe’s “normal is boring” philosophy from the book. The rest of the film goes down the same but Dwight’s totalitarian rule is lessened. You could even have Rafe imagining it as a prison camp rather than have it be the reality like the movie does to show how he sees authority. Eventually Rafe learns that Dwight was that famous student. Except after Dwight broke the rules and was obviously expelled, his dislike of authority grew and he eventually started lashing out by breaking other rules, namely the law. This got worse until Dwight got sent to Juvenile hall and saw just how much he threw his life away. Dwight then fought tooth and nail to regain people’s trust and get a job as a principal, almost trying to make it up to the system he fought against. The reason for his seemingly extreme rules is because he doesn’t want the students to throw their lives away like he almost did. Rafe then learns that whilst you shouldn’t blindly trust authority, certain rules are there for a reason and operation R.A.F.E isn’t a healthy way of expressing himself.

Of all the middle school doodle books, my least favorite was Big Nate. I don’t have a valid reason to dislike it, it just didn’t hit with 7 year old me. Second place would have to be Diary of a Wimpy kid. Greg was a terrible kid, but I just found it funny. That’s what that series was: funny, not deep, or anything else. Middle school was the best tho: Rafe was a likable kid and his backstory was enough for 7 year old me to raise my fist in solidarity.

About James Patterson appearing in the film, James Patterson has a certain reputation as an author. He primarily uses ghost writers to write all his books and drags on series way longer than they need to be (I.e. Maximum Ride) and often throws in stupid twists that make no sense to keep kids engaged. I believe there was a quote from he said once referring to his writing as a “factory”, but IDK. Simply put, James Patterson kind of doesn’t care about the books under his name, so I doubt he cared much about the movie’s adaptation choices.

These books got me through some of the worst parts of elementary and middle school with a terrible home life at my dad's and moving house so many times, never getting to settle. I'm so glad that I never got to see the movie, because I think that would have completely ruined the universe of the books for me. Even just from how it was described, it breaks my heart knowing that Rafe Katchadorian, one of my favorite childhood book protagonists, was watered down into Ferris Bueller But Make It Worse and his struggles and hardships were completely invalidated, his story turned on its head and made into something with no meaning or heart behind it. Rafe in the books was acting out because of his situation that was out of his control, and he genuinely felt like a terrible person for making his mom cry on her birthday, he struggled so much with self-esteem. Even as someone who was so different from him, I saw myself in him. But Rafe in the movie just seems like he doesn't care about the consequences of his actions, he just wants to stick it to the man. It's terrible. Even from the outsider's perspective of Georgia's book, Rafe isn't as bad as he is in the movies, and Georgia suffers because of Rafe's actions multiple times.
TD;DR: This movie is garbage for turning one of the characters I took comfort in in my life into an unsympathetic rebel.

Dad: Hi, son. You wanna watch _Middle School_ ?
Son: You mean read _Middle School_ ?
Dad: No, I’m talking about watching the movie.
Son: Oh, I forgot that movie existed. That’s a super old movie.
Dad: It came out like 2 years ago.
    Son: Feels longer.

I mean, I enjoyed both the books and the movie. Would I play the movie any time? No. But if it was on and I was bored, I'd probably watch it.

i cried at the end when Leo goes away because it gave some closure to the book character of leo. But the book does everything so much better, every character will have a backstory. I remember crying in year 5/grade 6 when the mum tells georgia that she is adopted and everyone stares at me during our reading lesson wandering why I'm crying. Miller in a spin off series gets some closure as he is told he bully's to gain money for his sister (who has kinda-terminal cancer) and tells rafe he will be moving away because his sister needs treatment as there staring at the view of london. The only character that never gets any closure is leo and leo has had that big role since the start of middle school. Although i am happy with leo's closure in the movie they can't make a series without leo. Rafe isn't artistic without leo, but he is leo is just his school persona, shy but creative and i'm making an indie movie based on this masterpiece of a book series

I used to go to a middle school like the one in that movie. Like we had silent lunches everyday because we were "too loud." We all had to sit by class in alphabetical order. Let's not even talk about the high school leveled teachings for middle schoolers. They had such high standards that most people I knew were failing. We also had to sit in lines outside the school for pickup. We were separated by boys and girls. We had to do it when it was freezing cold, and sit under the cover while it was windy and rainy. The people who road the bus got to sit inside. Doesn't help I'm allergic to everything outside so I would get sick so often.

I think part of why they changed the movie so much was because of Hollywood's strange obsession with that classic Underdog story that basically goes:
Quirky outcast character that everyone hates even though he's so charming and attractive it makes you question why everyone hates him in the first place, the only people that don't hate him are the generic sidekick and generic love interest, rules yucky, and the protag always comes out the hero in the end and everyone claps

I remember when I watched the movie adaptation after finishing the book, and then being confused about why some of the important points were changed, like why was the notebook destroyed so early in the story? Why wasn’t Rafe’s first rulebreak the fire alarm? Why was the principal Ron from The Who Was Show?

Okay. I admit that I haven't read the books. You make the book version of Rafe sound like an ordinary teenager with real problems.
The movie clearly lives in its own little world of the Oppressive School film genre. This includes things like Max Keeble and Lemonade Mouth, and definitely follow a specific formula that usually involves bullies and one (usually) evil principal who does things for the money and ulterior motives. To be honest, one of the best of these Oppressive School movies that I've seen is Rock 'n' Roll High School.
Also, the movie version of Worst Years of My Life was made in 2015, and these people are teenagers. I'm certain they would have seen some glimpse of VHSes, especially in under-funded schools.
