  • Is your aquarium too clean? It turns out your fish could be happier. The question is whether that would make YOU happier too. In part 2 of our interview with world traveler and aquarium adventurer Mike Tuccinardi, we look at his video from a snorkeling trip in the Rio Negro with an eye toward our own aquariums. In this Fincast, Mike describes how he is using what he saw in the river to re-create habitats that make his fish behave more naturally in an aquarium environment.

    Totally worth. Keep tea water and you will see more natural behaviors and light effects. It captivates you

    If I could get my tank looking like an amazon river I'd be ecstatic. Looks so much better than a crystal clear tank. More natural the better.

    It's all about keeping the fish in your aquarium as close to its natural environment as possible. If it means tea stained water from leaf litter, driftwood, Etc., then so be it. All about happy fish in a controlled environment.
    Thanks for Sharing the video. Loved it🐠🐟🐡

    Fantastic segment on one of the most interesting aspects of the hobby. To me the appeal of aquariums is the process of trying to replicate the natural habitats of the organisms that we are trying to keep. In doing so and studying these systems, it makes us better stewards - both as aquarists and in conservation.

    I wish I had that camera...I live next to a little river, when I was a kid it had several species of fish, including a four eyed fish with split eyes that looked above and under water at the same time...
    I'm pretty sure there should still be more of them upstream towards the mountains. I did go look on one farm one day but could only found cape galaxias and berg river red fins (red list) we only canvassed a small area though. there is also another river up the mountain with a pool where in summer thousands of the redfins would swarm and eat the skin off your feet.

    Yes, happy fish. I like the leaf litter, tannin stained water. I've tried to do that with my tetra tank.

    I agree you need to learn to keep them super happy that should be the whole point, so yes I would love to try to create it like they are actually used to, the tea stained water already there and also at least try to recreate the dark spots, amazing video once again, expecting that amazon tank how to video in the future.

    Clear water is good to highlight the fish colour, but the truth is that almost all water has certain kind of debree that makes crystal clear water very rare.
    If the fish are in good health they will be happy, but maybe a dark water will make them go out more since their vision is also disturbed and may not be so scared of movement outside the aquarium.

    I would set a " planted tank " (no fish in it ), and biotopes or more " Nature like " aquariums according to each species. Once I saw a wild Discus absolutely happy y a very small and dark aquarium plenty of branches and tea color water. He was eating like crazy. Only undergravel fiter!!!!

    Hmm, I'd have to evolve a lot more as a fishkeeper to get over my personal obsession for a "sterile", pristine tank. Purigen, Poly-Filter, Micron pads are where I am filtration wise, and I have no desire to give those up anytime soon...in time, God willing, I'll try "the natural" aquarium.

      Haha. I hear you. This may be a tough pill to swallow. I'm going so keep my clean tank while I set up a tannin tank. If the fish life really is different -- then I may go whole hog -- but I want to see if first... Check out the "inspiration" page on Tannin Aquatics website. Some of these are very pretty.

    what happened to the jelly fish tank? looks like there is fish not jelly's?

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly, I went on vacation and got behind on my water changes -- which started a downward spiral with the jellies. I put fish in there as a stop gap and it's been ok since the tank is quite sophisticated in terms of filtration and water flow.

    What would all that leaf litter do as far impeding or contributing to detritus

    • @kyler3683

      *the cleaning of, I'm referring to...

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would add to it for sure. As the leaves decay, they will eventually need to be cleaned out and replaced. I think that's part of the issue aquarium keepers wrestle with when it comes to all these leaves and twigs.

    I read an article that stated that fish live longer in the wild. If I had a "dirty" tank and was showing it and someone remarked critically as to the condition with a negative conotation, then I explained the reason for it being that way it would open the mind to a another concept of "beauty" and would open the conscience to a deeper level of appreciation then the conversation would be intellectually stimulating. It would be more than something pretty to look at.
