I think Starbase 80 is kind of symbolically what Lower Decks is all about. Star Trek generally tells the stories of the senior officers on the most important ships. DS9 got away from that a little bit, but the wormhole ended up making it significant, even if they wanted to keep the run-down, neglected feel. Lower Decks is supposed to be about the people and things you don't see much of, like an older starbase that doesn't have some importance to it...other than storing spare parts and selling parthas!

That’s such a great point!!!
I thought this was a good episode for Mariner and Freeman, resolving some unpacked baggage. And SB80 was the best way to do it.
It was fun! And true they needed to unpack some stuff!
