- Mosaics 101: How To Cut Glass for Mosaics
Learn to score and break glass to create your own mosaic tiles. They are perfect for a mosaic on a glass candleholder to let the candlelight shine through. And cutting glass is easier than you think!
To get started cutting glass you will need to put on safety glasses and wear leather protective gloves.
We bought our glass sheets at Hobby Lobby. You can also find sheets of glass at places that sell stained glass supplies. To cut the glass sheets into glass tiles for mosaics, we will show you how to use a glass cutter. A glasscutter is an inexpensive tool you can get at the hardware store. You hold it upright and use the sharp end to score the glass. You are making a scratch across the glass. Then you can hold the glass sheet in one hand and use pliers (we wrapped ours in masking tape) to break the glass where you made the score line. Repeat the process to score and break the glass into tiles.
Glass tiles are great for mosaics on glass surfaces. We like to find a straight-sided glass at a thrift store to mosaic onto with glass tiles. Then you can see through the glass tiles.
You can buy a glass cutting tool at a hardware store, a craft store, or at Amazon. Here is an affiliate link to a glass cutter. It will cost you nothing to click it but if you buy we will get a small reward.

Can you score the whole strip of glass before hand when doing the final cut to get the squares? It seems like it would go quicker that way...
We haven't tried it, but it seems like it would work. If you try it, let us know!

The small cuts you can just grab with your gloved hands and snap without a pliers too.
+Karen K Yes! Great tip! Thanks!
is this only with stain glass type glass?
+Skinky4291 We've only cut stained glass sheets, but we've seen videos of people using the glass cutter to cut glass for picture frames. They sell the cutting tool at the hardware store.
Easier to score on the side that has no texture.
Great tip Cindy! Thanks for sharing!
