- Circuit Charade Clermont-Ferrand old & new layout - Track Visit
In this video a compilation of my two visits to the old Clermont-Ferrand street circuit, and the new permanent Charade Circuit.
The Clermont-Ferrand Circuit, was a street circuit around an extinct volcano in the Puy-de-Dôme region in France. The 5 Miles long circuit opened in 1958 and contained a challenging mix of different corners and elevations. For that reason it was nicknamed the French Nürburgring.
The old Clermont-Ferrand Circuit hosted the Formula One French Grand Prix four times between 1965 and 1972.
Because the old Clermont-Ferrand Circuit was found too dangerous it lost the French Grand Prix and other international races. Untill 1988 it was used for national races. Then the street circuit closed for motorsport.
However, the General Council of Puy-de-Dôme recognized the interest of a circuit to the local economy. So, with their Financial support a new 2.47 Miles circuit was built.
Just like Spa-Francorchamps, they used a part of the old circuit and built a new connection. The new circuit opened in 1989 and was now it was a permanent race track, known under the name “Circuit de Charade”.
Some facts and figures about the new "Circuit de Charade":
Opening 1989
Length 3.975 Km 2.470 Miles
18 Corners
The Charade Circuit is a permanent circuit since 2000. It hosted national championship races for the French Supertouring Championship and the FFSA GT Championship in the 1990's. Currently, the circuit hosts historic motorsport events, track days and driving courses.
With special thanks to Circuit de Charade for their hospitality. And Simon Smith for the voice over. Visit also his channel: / higherplaingames
Thanks for watching this video.

No fucking way!! 😮 I stayed in Clairmont Ferrande last year in one of them crappy porta cabin overnight places. I remember going around some of these roads having driven off the ferry ⛴ I never knew there was even a track there and we drove on some of it! 😮 Madness!!!
New Circuit de Charade has to be the most fun circuit in the world. It's so much fun. Reminds me of if you mixed Cadwell Park and Imola together.
Also looks like a great circuit for spectators!
And that's the reason, why mr. Tilke shouldn't have anything to do with racetracks. And the Charade Circuit is a very good example of how to do a safer, smaller, but fun circuit
This looks to be a good drivers circuit. Wonderful.
Yes it is. The old circuit was fantastic, but the current one is also a great classic and technical race track.
Ngl mate I’m obsessed with this channel I’m a complete history nut when it comes to motorsport and cars (gonna visit brooklands soon) and your channel sparked my love for this kind of thing so thanks lol
You're welcome!
Great video.. I love the layout of this circuit...
Thanks! Yeah the old track had a great layout. I drove there virtual with GPL and it was on my wish list for many years.
I don't know why I missed this video. Thanks for putting me the link in today's comment. Both the old track and the new one are really beautiful. Grazie Herman, ciao!
Prego, ciao!
Thanks for the video, very interesting
You're welcome.
That overtake was nice.
Hahaha thanks!
This track need a little bit of love damn, awesome vid! new subscriber
Thanks!
Thank you youtube algorythm for this, I didn't know this track existed before!
Fab old circuit, I remember riding my GPZ 750 all around the area in 1986 and having a "burn-up" with some locals.......happy days, great memories!
Thanks for sharing them!
Great Video 10/10
Thanks!
Thx algorythm for this discovery !
I make the same but with google map, haha !
Thank you to share your passion and good continuation.
Thanks!
Considering that most of the circuits of the past closed due to safety reasons, it is a miracle that the nordschleife survived till this day. Maybe because the nordschleife was early on a closed racetrack, and didnt share public roads.
Yes, if it was a street circuit it would have been closed for a long time. However, that's not the only factor. I think the "Tourist Rides" (Touristenfahrten) saved the Nordschleife because of it's commercial interest.
wow, love your channel >please keep them coming!:)
Thanks. I do my best to create frequentely new videos. But these are difficult times.
Imagine this circuit hosting the F1 GP instead of Paul Ricard . The races will be much more interesting
Another classic track decimated
Yes, but fortunately the old track is still there. And the current circuit is also great.
Hi guys. Guy channel and what a wonderful course. I've been driving here in Raceroom which is a sim racing game and I was wondering if I could link the channel and video in my description ?, when I do so. Thanks for the great video. subbed 👍🏼
Thanks. Off cours you may always share a link to the video.
Hey Herman great video of discovering lost circuits, say I want to ask u a question.
If there was one era of the history of Grand Prix motor racing you would like to be a part of, which would it be and why?
Thanks
Emmanuel Boateng
Hi herman, can you visit sepang circuit in malaysia?f1 used to race there since 1999 to 2017.can you make onboard video.and second, fuji speedway when f1 start to race there in 1976 title showdown between niki lauda and james hunt. There's a lot abandoned section of fuji.f1 start race in 1976 until late of 2008.hope you make the video
Fuji is on my list for a long time, because of the old banking. When I go to Japan I will visit it for sure. And when I ever go to Malaysia I also will visit Sepang. But honoustly, there are other classic circuits much higer on my list.
Also would be interesting if you included some photos or footage of past races at both the old & current track!
There is copyright on that. I don't take footage from others, like many other TH-camrs do. They will see their channel terminated soon or later.
@@Circuitsofthepast Fair point, it's good that you don't then. However, if you know of legitimate sources, could you provide links to them?
Pierre Gasly / Monza 🏁🏆/ Alpha Tauri-Honda
A great race and deserved win for Pierre. But what has it to do with Circuit Charade? If you posted this by the Rouen-les-Essarts video I could understand, because Pierre Gasly was born in Rouen.
Even for the current circuit, it still looks old for it, could use a touch up.
It have a nice classic look. The buildings are fine and the track is great. Let's preserve this as a classic race track.
abandoned section is clearly see on google maps... entire old section is still there... nis+c to try on 2d sim.. like it
Have simraced this track, more epic than Green Hell.
I think it's more technical. However, the Green Hell is a very intimidating track in real, which you don't experience in the sim.
@@CircuitsofthepastAll tracks are more intimidating in reality.
@@BunnyR13 Yes that's true. In sim racing there is no risk.
Are you interested in abandoned tracks from other parts of the world? There's one about an hour away from me in Sydney Australia... Catalina Park... I could go up there if people are interested
Yeah that would be great!
another sad track
Why sad? It's still a great circuit.
@@Circuitsofthepast sad, because great part this track not used for races
it kind of looks like one of those fictional tracks from Gran Turismo.
But this one is real :)
