God, this series was a HUGE part of my life since its release. I finally stopped playing it this year, but I do sometimes miss the days of teenage me hopping onto D1 to do Kings Fall with my friends.
I took a year long break after beating Beyond Light. I needed to, my sanity level needed it, I couldn't deal with another year of grinding for loot and levels. I played other games, played with friends who no longer play Destint, etc. Found a nice little layed back clan for destiny and been playing with then since the a week before the release of Witch Queen.
@@Zero_XTZ5 Its still a good game, dont get me wrong. Its simply not for me, anymore. I dont like the grind it requires anymore, I cant dedicate enough time to it, and biggest of all, I dont want to buy new content knowing that it will be removed in a few years. Then theres the fact that all my friends have stopped playing it, and I havent been able to get any new ones to start because despite it being free, the new player experience is pretty terrible.
I started playing Destiny 1 during the closed alpha, and have been playing since then. For sure the game has had its ups and downs, but if all the games I’ve played over the years, Destiny is the one franchise that has been able to capture the majority of my attention.

Great video guys! D1 vet here and even tho I'm almost up to speed with the BTS, it's always do cool to go back through the history of this franchise, specially the good parts!
This video deserves more views. The story telling is insane. Destiny was such a big part of my childhood which I cherish to this day. I one day dream of teaming up with those guys to create something even bigger and better than destiny that encapsulates the whole world in the future.
I always remember the drama behing the e3 version being the "real" game and then having most the game cut to DLC yet you could get to it through glitches before it was released.
I grew up on Halo, but beyond Halo, I only briefly witnessed Destiny through a couple crucible matches. Years later, I grabbed Destiny 2's copy with Forsaken a couple months before the announcement of New Light and Shadowkeep. I was lucky enough to pre-order Shadowkeep, I played through the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and the recent Forsaken expansion - while individually reviewed as hit or miss, playing through those expansions back-to-back had me thrilled for what would come next.
A video detailing some of the history of Bungie’s older works, namely Oni and Marathon, and how they might connect and link up with Halo and Destiny would be pretty interesting. Definitely some shared concepts and names, like the AI’s (Tycho, Durandal, and Leela). Be pretty cool for some of us old-timers. :)
I remember paying for Destiny 1 with a season pass and just feeling betrayed with the lack of story. Taken King had come out but I already dipped. Shame they didn't stick to the old linear story model.
Honestly, if you look at it over the grand scheme, as they come closer to the end it has become fairly linear, yet it still has its plot twists. Everything was tied to one main protagonist, but it took them 6-7 years to finally show them.
Destiny and D2 are great games trapped by the prison of its own development, I played hundreds of hours of both games but in the end both became a exhausting and costly chore rather than some good old fun.

My favorite moment was hanging on the farm and just interacting with people. I remember I had a group of just random people catch on to something I was doing. It was pretty fun. When the civilians would walk up to the farm and through the map and then down those stairs I would pretend like I was escorting them and for example if they went through doors I would stand by the door and salute. Some people caught on and added their own little things to do while we “escorted” the civilians. Fun stuff!
Pretty funny how they cut Joseph Staten's original narrative, people didn't like the narrative, then "The Taken King" drew inspiration from Staten's narrative and suddenly the story had gotten better. It's almost like they should've listened to the guy who wrote Halo's beloved story to begin with.
I loved destiny 1 but I never raided, never managed to get 5 other friends who played it. Get round to last year where I finally bit the bullet after a couple years hiatus from the game and I decided to lfg the 30th anniversary dungeon. Me and 2 others finished it and I thanked them with a Reddit post detailing how I'm usually anxious about things like that but loved running it. I got a reply mentioning a clan I could join, Introverts of destiny, that would be chill and honestly yeah I've finally raided, tried the day one VOTD, Finally tried harder activities like master modes, I absolutely love it. They may be basically strangers but I've never got to experience anything even slightly similar with how fun, satisfying and honestly friendly as this. I should have tried this years ago. Absolutely amazing.

Destiny is time-demanding. To play Destiny, you have to play a lot of Destiny. I think it’s one of the best live service games, but as a live service game it doesn’t really respect the player’s time so to speak.

One of the biggest dissapointments in gaming, if you ask me. Joe's full vision and original story of the destiny universe will never be realized, cause it died before the game was even released. Played all of D1, quit D2 when Forsaken came out. Couldn't keep playing the scraps of what it could have been. The gameplay was tight, especially when playing with friends. And the raids were something you never saw in FPS games before, and were really refreshing. All that was missing was a coherent view into the overarching story and universe of Destiny, and I never could shake that. It felt like visiting a ghost town, with bits of a story here and there, but you never get to see the vibrant city that it once was.
destiny was being hyped up while i was in late junior high. so impressionable. my hero was still composing the soundtrack. while I did fall off semi-quickly, I definitely appreciated Bungie's attempt at a fresh sci-fi universe. I recall it looking great, visually and aurally being very immersive. even tho I stopped playing, I'll always reflect positively on the *vibes* of this new universe, to me as a young guy.
Witch Queen story was so amazing... coming as a Halo die hard where campaign leads all (and earlier destiny campaigns were not good...) this was very fulfilling and they are doing an amazing job. And honestly, I moved to the middle of nowhere far away from family and friends, Destiny has definitely provided a unique atmosphere of friends that I know from doing raids, dungeons and even just grinding random quests together.
Id like to add about the vaulting of old content, ive read somewhere (so it may or may not be true) that the main reason was the they updated the engine with beyond light. Everything had to be re-scripted/re-coded to retain any content. Huge patch, because re-writing a whole game and 4 expansion would be a pretty massive patch, bugs, ya thered be alot. The money and time to re-write all of that content, immense. Adding it the future, not easy. Could have released a seprate version that froze the game before beyond light, just saying.
Halo and destiny content two of my favorite games franchises and old video clips from two of my fav content creators from each act man and Aztecross love it!
Yes there were forums about this game before reach was even released. We talked about it by a different name on forums etc. But that poster in reach was a huge "confirmation" for people talking about a game besides halo bungi has planned and has started working on.
Hey this is Justin a big fan. I hope you see this post but, in halo games where you drive the warthog its got brakes. So as a fan of trying new things in halo. I think it would be a pretty cool challenge to drive to always drift in the warthog through a mission. It's a cool way to splatter enemies along the way and better accuracy for anyone on the machine gun. It gets challenging at times but, it's fun and gave me a few kicks out of it. Well anyways I hope you give it some thought and think of all the missions that deals with driving such as the last mission on halo 1, 3, and odst. And to me personally all race games most people finds a way where friends online would go and just drift. So I see the uniqueness of people wanting to make videos that could land on singlehaloclips as a unique way to kill in multi-player. Just I hope you see this.
This was amazing! I loved taken king, and have many memories with d1. In d2 it has to be unlocking the dreaming city and it ended up being my favorite location in destiny over all.
It has to be the Age of triumphs in D1 felt amazing seeing all my accomplishments lead up to D1 finally just to be tossed out at the beginning of D2 :)
Didn't expect to watch for the full hour but as a new light it was great to see how Destiny evolved since the very beginning. It almost makes me wish I didn't sell my Xbox after starting college..
Great job with this video 2014 I was in college at the time when I got destiny 1. Honestly I'm glad I didn't stop playing thanks to Destiny 1 I met alot of great people. Destiny 2 I'm not gonna lie I barley play it been playing other games.
I always think this. It could not have been worse than what we got, based on his stellar track record! Destiny would have been so much more widely excepted at launch, and probably would have been the best complete game i had ever played.
Spinfoil theory: The first public mention of Destiny were the words "but lo, there is another" at the end of a news post that was talking first about halo 3 content, then ODST. I don't think they were talking about Crimson Steam Pirates.
My favorite memories are from Destiny 1 with my friends. Then Destiny 2 launched and my friends moved on from it. I still play Destiny 2, but I don’t go and do a lot of the endgame content as much as I did in Destiny 1.
This video perfectly captures why the games as a service model sucks, especially when it talks about the malaise that followed Taken King. The GAAS model is simply too unstable in the long term. Games either experience content droughts, contrived stories, or both. Content is drip fed, never released in volumes that even remotely compare to the likes of Skyrim or Red Faction Guerrilla. These are all reasons the games as a service model should be abandoned.
I find it ironic that they changed the story so it wouldn’t be very linear, and yet the end story of D1 is still pretty linear. Because of the Xp level restriction with a new character and each planet having a set base level requirement, it is pretty linear for playing the story. It’s not linear for the activities though. Very ironic.
There's something about this game doesn't immerse me like the Bungie Halos, but you can't beat D2's gunplay. I hope they figure out how to bring it together in the future. You guys have a great perspective on gaming and glad you are branching out from Halo. Love the videos keep up the good work.
Love the video keep up the destiny content!! Bungie has been through such a roller coaster when starting destiny and till now, I’ll be here for all ya vids🙏🏼❤️
what a wild ride it's been! huge bonus for having dunkey in this video lol taken king era was the best time in my life so far, i will never forget the friends i made and the raiding we did and the year of great gaming we had.
Bungie: courted by Apple, then Microsoft, then Sony... I still respect what Bungie is, even if most of it is not the old Bungie. I loved their Halo games, even the flawed ones such as Reach, and I still hope to see them succeed in whatever IP they may tackle, for they are talented folks with good ideas and commitment.
32:02 Mad coz bad lol That aside, I’m glad I’ve spent the past 7-8 years playing Destiny with my friends. Through thick and thin, I’ve enjoyed this game, and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the future. (My favorite point in time for Destiny was definitely age of triumph in D1)
Destiny has something special that alot of other franchises dont. Mysticality, mystery, a sprawling universe, and an extremely loyal and loving developer with a great sense of community. Dont even get me started on the music too.
Good video, cleared up a lot of things I had suspicions about specifically D1. Pre-ordered and played a lot over a month and was thoroughly disappointed how short and hollow the game was at launch. Then finding that all additional story was going to be released as paid DLC at $40.00 each, put the game down and never looked back. It really didn't help that I was about a year into playing Warframe when Destiny launched and they were giving all their content out for free. I'm glad that it's improved a lot since then and has a strong fanbase behind it but I feel like it's a franchise that's just not for me for various reasons.
And that's ok! Honestly, what I do for people who are interested is I ask them to check out the core gameplay with the F2P stuff first, see if they like it, THEN recommend something from there. Destiny isn't for everyone, that's plenty of games for everyone nowadays, and honestly, I like that.
I feel the same. I know there is high praise with Destiny 2 nowadays but Destiny 1 gave me such a sour taste and idk...doesnt interest me even years after. Strange given I LOVE Borderlands, but I just cant get into Destiny 2.
I played WF for 5 years before I switched to D2 in 2019 when it became available on Steam. Hated the direction WF was going. Best decision I've ever made even tho in 2017 when D2 launched I was mocking it and said that I'll never play it.
I was always obsessed with the development of this game and this is such a great video on it. For years I think people didn't really know the truth or how the 500 million dollar budget was blatant misinformation
One of the best franchise's I've ever played, you guys did an excellent summary of the franchise here. Also fav DLC for me was probably Rise of Iron in D1, or Witch Queen in D2
Well, just saw that this is an hour long.. I've loved all the Halo content throughout the years so it's time to break out the popcorn for this one 👀

I'm so glad Staten is in charge of 343 right now.
If only he was able to do anything. Bonnie Ross and co will continue to lead Halo into the fucking ground. Nothing Joe Staten can do about that.
Nice job with this video!
20:22 truer words have never been said. Warlock master race
I didn't play D2 a lot just on and off so i dont really have a favorite expansion pack. i have a few hours to play with friends and thats it.
this music is amazing!
Goddamn 29:00 and forwards criticism of the game still holds true even to todays current experience.
I've been playing on and off since the beta. I can't wait to see how this saga ends
Grinding to get the whisper of the worm was always a highlight for me
I feel a little disappointed that Deej wasn’t mentioned in the video what a legend he was
honestly favorite part of destiny is calling it shit but playing it for almost 8 years and loving every shitty moment
Halo and destiny content two of my favorite games franchises and old video clips from two of my fav content creators from each act man and Aztecross love it!
22:50 "a plot about digging up an ancient relic on Mars"
Every Mass Eeffect fan: "wait I know this one!"
I REALLY enjoyed this man. Fantastic job 👏
Excited to finally set some time aside to dig into this video!
at 13:00 Raid "Depth of Darkness" sounds Interesting!
Great video
Favorite time periods were TakenKing/and/Forsaken
This was amazing! I loved taken king, and have many memories with d1. In d2 it has to be unlocking the dreaming city and it ended up being my favorite location in destiny over all.
It has to be the Age of triumphs in D1 felt amazing seeing all my accomplishments lead up to D1 finally just to be tossed out at the beginning of D2 :)
how does this only have 480 likes? This is the best review and history of Destiny.
Didn't expect to watch for the full hour but as a new light it was great to see how Destiny evolved since the very beginning. It almost makes me wish I didn't sell my Xbox after starting college..
Absolutely flawless documentary. Thank you very much. DO MORE. My favourite expansion is the taken king. For obvious reasons. 🖤
You can see the destiny logo on captain Keys’s pipe on the first mission on CE
I would do unspeakable things to see that 2013 supercut
Great job with this video
2014 I was in college at the time when I got destiny 1. Honestly I'm glad I didn't stop playing thanks to Destiny 1 I met alot of great people. Destiny 2 I'm not gonna lie I barley play it been playing other games.
You are great at what you do
I enjoyed this, we have a few more years left and the story just keeps getting better
22:55 That would be Uldren, Crow wasn’t introduced until about a season ago or so.
Super well put together video! Who knows how the story would have looked like if they kept Joe Staten's story
I always think this. It could not have been worse than what we got, based on his stellar track record! Destiny would have been so much more widely excepted at launch, and probably would have been the best complete game i had ever played.
I’m mad excited for his content
Spinfoil theory: The first public mention of Destiny were the words "but lo, there is another" at the end of a news post that was talking first about halo 3 content, then ODST.
I don't think they were talking about Crimson Steam Pirates.
The taken that shit was fun asf especially with the new sunbreaker subclass the throwing hammers were op
this video was absolutely amazing
Is that video at 14:16 about the inspirations for Destiny available on youtube somewhere?
1:48
I'm really surprised that Halo 2 uses LISP, I thought that they used C or Visual Basic
That was just the excuse given.. surely it was to make it into a more repetitive looter shooter than a tight sharp story.
@@CoercedJab exactly right
There's something about this game doesn't immerse me like the Bungie Halos, but you can't beat D2's gunplay. I hope they figure out how to bring it together in the future. You guys have a great perspective on gaming and glad you are branching out from Halo. Love the videos keep up the good work.
love the vids!
Love the video keep up the destiny content!! Bungie has been through such a roller coaster when starting destiny and till now, I’ll be here for all ya vids🙏🏼❤️
This video should have like a zillion views
I will watch anything you guys do with destiny
Yep
what a wild ride it's been! huge bonus for having dunkey in this video lol taken king era was the best time in my life so far, i will never forget the friends i made and the raiding we did and the year of great gaming we had.
At the time it was released it felt revolutionary for casual gamers who had consoles
Dude, I need that soundtrack for this video.
Oh boy, this is gonna be a long and entertaining video.
Jason Jones was wrong.
I want to see that original super cut so badly
Bungie: courted by Apple, then Microsoft, then Sony...
I still respect what Bungie is, even if most of it is not the old Bungie. I loved their Halo games, even the flawed ones such as Reach, and I still hope to see them succeed in whatever IP they may tackle, for they are talented folks with good ideas and commitment.
why was reach flawed???
@@caliginousmoira8565 people hate bloom, and the armor abilities, as well as the story retconned one of the books
@@bradg615 the book retcon was the only thing that i didn't like
32:02 Mad coz bad lol
That aside, I’m glad I’ve spent the past 7-8 years playing Destiny with my friends.
Dont even get me started on the music too.
agreed i love this game
The music in the new Duality dungeon is 🔥🔥🔥 but the Whisper mission will always be my favorite
@@GreyFox909 music in beyond light is phenomenal
It's so good now. I played warframe as well way before destiny but I haven't touched warframe since 2018
great video!
Awesome video
I was always obsessed with the development of this game and this is such a great video on it. For years I think people didn't really know the truth or how the 500 million dollar budget was blatant misinformation
Damn these dudes be documenting things that aint even happened yet.
I missed so much I didn't have steady internet connection till 2014 🤦🏾🤦🏾
One of the best franchise's I've ever played, you guys did an excellent summary of the franchise here.
Also fav DLC for me was probably Rise of Iron in D1, or Witch Queen in D2
Witch queen and Beyond light are my favorite never played d1 tho but I understand it’s great
The hype release for Destiny was the closest thing I believe I’ll ever experience to Halo 2’s release- truly one of my most prized gaming memories
Wow the concept art of what destinyshould be, is what I love about destiny.
