    13:47 That's because the "Performance Legato" patches will actually substitute a short articulation for short notes. It's one of the main advantages of these patches in Symphonic Orchestra, since you don't need to keyswitch for many types of phrases. "Performance Legato" is the predecessor of the new "Total Performance" legatos just released for the solo flute and solo trumpet. Unfortunately, not all instruments have a "Performance Legato" patch. All of the strings have it, along with the a6 horns, a6 trombones, and a6 trumpets.

      Let's hope there will be more updates

    Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra is a great package. I do prefer their Chamber Strings over their Symphonic Strings, and there is actually a version of SSO which substitutes that, called "Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra Chamber Edition". Unfortunately, Masse is not included in this version, since it uses the samples from Symphonic Strings. I do think that the outrigger mics should have been included in the "base" version of SSO instead of only being in the Pro versions. The outriggers in AIR Lyndhurst are simply magical. I use the very basic mix of outriggers @ 0 dB and the close mics @ -6 dB, and it sounds phenomenal, with a wider sound than the standard tree mics, plus a bit of extra detail from the close mics.
    And there is a _lot_ of content in the SSO libraries that many people miss, because they don't venture out of the main folder. In "Advanced" -> "Extended Techniques", there are "Core Techniques" and "Decorative Techniques" patches which include all of the articulations.

      Thank you. Great information here. I do own the chamber and I love them. There isn't really any good alternative to the chamber strings, and they are so much better for a smaller and detailed sound.

      Thank you, Justin. I'm going to screenshot your comment/advice and try them the next time I get into my music room. I have both the Symphonic and Chamber. Bought SSO Pro to get Masse included, then bought Chamber Strings Pro separately.

      If I'm just beginning should I just stick with the basic package and see how I go? What's your preferred DAW for orchestration. I assume Ableton would not be rec.. ?
      Thanks.

    • @Justin.Franks
      @Justin.Franks ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@informedchoice2249 It absolutely makes sense to start with the standard version. Spitfire's upgrade policy means that you will not pay more if you go with standard then later upgrade to pro, compared with just getting pro. IIRC the upgrade is $450 for all 3 (strings, brass, woodwinds) together, or $180 each during one of Spitfire's 40% off sales.
      Which DAW is almost entirely subjective personal preferences. Any modern DAW can be used effectively. With that said, I would agree that Ableton would not be the best choice unless you already own and are very familiar with it. I would say the most popular options for orchestral music and scoring are Logic, Cubase, and Studio One. Each has a good articulation management system. Digital Performer and Cakewalk have this as well. And FL Studio is said to have the best and most intuitive piano roll editor, so if you will be entering in parts manually instead of recording them in on a MIDI controller, it might be worth a look.

    Wonderful presentation as always! Happy New Year. One thing I have noticed in my near 40 years of composing for film / TV / dance / etc. The current crop of sampled libraries are extraordinary. If I had the dough I would use East West OPUS (I currently own and have been using since the 90s) for Film. No other library captures that Hollywood FFF Forte better. BBC for TV, I do a lot of composing for stuff with ex Dr Whos and it captures that BBC sound and of course Spitfire for dance. The latter has more of a Euro symphonic sound that I feel would be too laid back for film. All the best to all!

      @SecondTierSound  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great points. I can agree with that. I'm amazed how good the strings of EW still sounds, despite its age. And spitfire certainly works better for contemporary works, and yes, BBC for TV.
      Where do you place cinematic studio strings, and cinestrings?

      @@SecondTierSound c'est une bonne question....I can only say today's crop of composers have great choices for orchestra samples. All are good to exceptional. I remember, (mid 80s at Concordia University in Montreal) lol, trying to use my DX7 to emulate orchestra sounds lolololol, then I bought a Yamaha TX16W 12 bit sampler, which was very, very limited but hey, they were " real samples" not synthed lolol. I had an old IBM 8086 computer with 2 megs (yes kids megs) of ram and a 20 meg hard disc and my fellow students thought I was Gd. lololol. They said" you'll never fill up your hard disc" lololol I was using Voyager Sequencer Plus at the time as a daw. Thank you for all you do for the younger composers I know it helps them out immeasurably... and me too!

    Advice appreciated. I've tried Reaper, and I was baffled by it a little. I have some Ableton exp... but only minor. I'm wondering what thebest DAW might be if I want to do my own music as well as try creating orchestral pieces. Are they all fairly similar or would you suggest Cubase or Pro Tools with Kontakt as an intermediate for loading voicings? It's all very complex!

    • @SecondTierSound
      @SecondTierSound  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most DAWs today are pretty competent. I'm biased and really like cubase, and a lot of composers do too. But logic is also popular for Mac users. Every DAW has a strength, and Cubase midi handling is pretty great.

    6:27 Listen to the oboes reverb. sometimes the oboe seems far away, sometimes close. These inconsistencies in all (wonderful) woodwinds are urging me to use only close mic.

    • @SecondTierSound
      @SecondTierSound  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't noticed that, but phasing is otherwise a common problem in all woodwind libraries.

  • @Po1itica11yNcorrect
    @Po1itica11yNcorrect ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My brass update loaded fine but the woodwinds update says I have 187 files missing. Specifically fast runs. So they sound great on TH-cam videos. On my system, I won't know until the issue is resolved.

    • @SecondTierSound

      You have to repair the library. Try both in Kontakt and with the spitfire app.

    BTW, I've found a solution to a known Spitfire software-glitch: on some machines the audio of an instrument can drop out. Their website suggests refreshing the instrument. And, yes, that works but it tends to be temporary. I find if I load Spitfire instruments via Komplete Kontrol, the solution is permanent. I understand that not everyone has the Komplete Kontrol software but nevertheless, this simple and permanent solution to the Spitfire glitch may be worth mentioning here for anyone who has the relevant software.

      @@SecondTierSound 😎👍 If the solution proves successful for other people (with the relevant software) maybe someone should get Spitfire Audio to post this solution on their website. I've tried to contact them but, sadly, failed.

    Wow. Sounds really good. I wish they would make a percussion library that would work with the NKS platform. p

    • @SecondTierSound
      @SecondTierSound  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ask them. I have a libraries from spitfire that works with nks.

  • @ArturoAlbero

    I always thought it sounds better than BBCSO. I wish there were total performance patches of every instrument. Also, I don't like how the app manages the libraries, as I work in two separate computers and then I can't update the libraries properly. They should address this technical issue.
    On the other hand, I think Spitfire has too many libraries and these ones receive not as much love as they deserve. I know it's business, but Spitfire Symphony Orchestra should have been the staple symphonic orchestra for Spitfire and they should take care of it, correcting the inconsistencies and adapting it to its new plugin (However, their plugin is much worse than the Sine Player Orchestral Tools made, which is amazing).

  • @ASX2001
    @ASX2001 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved that library, but the legatos of the strings (violas most) is not up to date i.m.o.. You played faster, but in Adagios they sound note per note, not in a flow. They should improve it like they did with the flute.

    • @SecondTierSound
      @SecondTierSound  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is actually a different patch for that, that adapts to your playing style. You can also change the speed of the legato transitions.

  • @apocryphal_man

    I find it too wet for many applications. The room sounds great but you simply can’t take it back enough. Also the inconsistency with spitfire libraries. Shame, the raw recordings are always wonderful.

    • @SecondTierSound
      @SecondTierSound  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a symphonic sound, the "wetness" is perfect. If you need a drier, or smaller sound, it is not ideal, or impossible. You need other libraries for that. There are inconsistencies for sure, but no deal breakers. Every library has its faults. It's better to know them and how you deal with them, rather than just disregard them entirely. No library does it all, but is rather focusing on a particular thing. I can totally live with the spitfire problems, and this is still a boutique priced product with really great instruments. Some people prefer a different sound, and that is totally valid. Cheers!

  • @cornodk
    @cornodk ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Will the inconsistencies be addressed? Have you given Spitfire Audio this feedback?

    • @SecondTierSound
      @SecondTierSound  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They know it, but I don't think they can fix it. It is really subtle though
