My dad has diabetes insipidus. I really appreciate this video. Most people don’t even know about diabetes insipidus much less how how deadly it really is. These people WILL die without ADH injections. Unfortunately some DI sufferers do not respond to ADH injections. Their bodies just don’t react to the injections and they die because their bodies can’t retain enough water for them to survive. Thankfully this disease is extremely rare. My dad was only properly diagnosed with diabetes insipidus because my grandma was a pediatric nurse who recognized the symptoms. If she hadn’t recognized the symptoms my dad, me, and my son might not be alive today

Thanks for this clear definition of diabetes insipidus, one of the best I've seen yet as it's both thorough and succinct at the same time. I have this condition and wish that my doctor had seen your video because it took several months for him to take me seriously, despite drinking and passing 20+ litres of water per day. It may shock you to hear this, but my doctor actually suggested that I suck on pastilles to reduce my thirst... didn't even check my sodium levels or anything. It wasn't until I sought a second opinion that the proper diagnosis finally took place. It may be a rare condition, but is very distressing to those of us who live with this as an undiagnosed condition. (The word "thirst" doesn't do it justice.) Thanks again!

Dr. John Campbell Thanks for your reply... In my case, the DI is related to Langerhans Cell Hystiocytosis. The LCH symptoms began in 2012 and I received the LCH diagnosis in late 2013. The DI symptoms began quite suddenly, about a year later. Interestingly, regular MRIs show no evidence of anything on the pituitary as would be expected. These diseases are a bit distressing and no fun to live with, but many people have it much worse.

I hope you're having effective treatment now. I am waiting for some tests and hope to be free of the debilitating anxiety about where is the next toilet!

Thankyou for a great explanation of diabetes insipidus. My 7yo was diagnosed with the congenital nephrogenic form 6 and a half years ago. He is on hydrochlorothiazide and indomethacin to control it. We are also waiting for the results of genetic testing for his newborn brother... Had many a dr tell me i probably know more about the condition than they do as it is so rare - 1 in 250,000
I got difficulty in understanding why you mentioned thizide type diuretics as treatment in nephrogenic type diabetes insipidus .....if in the case of nephrogenic type the kidney is not responding to normal amount of antidiuretic hormone resulting in polyuria why thiazide diuretics are recommended as treatment knowing that they increase urine production puting an individual in higher risk of dehydration?.....if there is something i am missing i look for ward for correction.

Unfortunately you failed to mention obese people who have drastically increased the number of Type 2s globally. Thanks to them, us Type 1s are generalised into the "Diabetic" groups with people not knowing the difference between the two. I don't dislike Type 2 Diabetics but the majority of cases caused by obese individuals and which can be completely avoided, has not done any favours of those who have got Type 1 or 2 through no fault of their own. I honestly still believe that Type 1 Diabetic care in many countries has been hindered as a result of the spirally cost of what I call generalised Diabetes, because of the influx of Type 2s over the last 15-20 years. Why would we treat nephrogenic diabetes insipidus with thiazide like diuretics when we need to be reabsorbing water from the dc tubule?

Thank God we don't need to sample urine by tasting it. It would look incredibly odd doing that during clinicals.
december 2015 Smelling it would suffice. You can often smell the sweetness of glucose in urine lol... reminds me of Sugar Puffs. Haha

My diabetes no 2 was triggered by having P.C.O.S .....which affected my pituitary gland.
I am managing it by diet and insulin injections.
I cannot imagine a doctor would have willingly tasted another person's urine
