  • When American won Independence from England in 1776, there were 13 colonies which formed a federal government. Colonies expanded from east coast to west forming 34 states by 1861.
There were differences between states in the north and states in the south - which resulted in the American Civil War.
It began in 1861, after decades of simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery, states’ rights and westward expansion.
The conflict in which North states known as Union side won was the costliest and deadliest war ever fought on American soil, with some 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers killed, millions more injured and much of the South (the Confederate side) left in ruin.
