  • Kind of surprised/disappointed in humanity that this scene isn't on TH-cam already, though the entire film is so that's something. Check it out now if you haven't seen it (it has Christopher Lee! Rest his soul.)
    • Video
    It's also on Netflix if you want to see it in a more legit way.

      What makes Ariel from Little Mermaid or Carola from Tales from the Darkside the movie's Lover's Vow (the gargoyle story) no different?

    • @superoriginalname2721
      @superoriginalname2721 6 ปีที่แล้ว +307

      Johnlindsey289 a lot actually, at least between Ariel and amalthea (hav'nt seen the others) Ariel WANTED to be a human in the fist place, it's one of the first things we learn about her.Amalthea on the other hand is a creature who is above humans, something pure.while Ariel might've missed her old home she never expresses that she would lea 've Eric or her human life.amalthea instead is experiencing something she's probably never felt before. Emotions and the fear of death, and the loss of her innocence something that characterizes unicorns so distinctively and sets them so high above humans, they would probably be killed rather then lose it, as it is irreplaceable (mentioned above)

      What about Carola from Tales from the Darkside the movie or Twilight Sparkle in Equestria Girls?

    • @superoriginalname2721
      @superoriginalname2721 6 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Johnlindsey289 as I said before this movie is much more related to the loss of innocence not feeling love or falling in love with someone's who's another species.for twilight the only parallels I see are that 1 she was turned in to a human and 2 she fell in love with someone who was human.But twilight never felt the things amalthea felt, losing not only your physical form, but losing what characterized her whole species, innocence.you can argue twilight lost her magic, but at the end she got it back, but innocence is impossible to get back.Heck even in the romance department they are widely different, with twilight still having a chance(movie wise) in her own world, but Amalthea and Prince Lir will never be able to experience how far their love would've have gone being in two different worlds(not litterally) so amalthea experiences much more loss and character development, as she's kinder and more emotional at the end.

    • @Johnlindsey289
      @Johnlindsey289 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Well for me since i'm a guy, i felt bad for Prince Lir and him losing what was important to him and felt his pain.
      i felt bad for Prince Lir so much i wrote a fanfiction alternate ending story where Amalthea doesn't turn into a regular ordinar 4 legged feral unicorn creature! instead she is transformed into an anthro humanoid unicorn being with her dress still on (same body structure of a human with high intelligence, breasts, feet and hands, white fur on her body with tail, shapely body and her unicorn self's head on top as she is something different plus emotions/feelings like a human) with human emotion/feelings as she becomes like something out of a furry artwork or an anthro MLP artwork or any of Hattonslayden's artworks (he draws amazing artworks of Sci-fi/fantasy stuff to human males romancing anthro/xeno/mutant females) as she has gained stronger powers than ever as she fights the red bull her way after seeing her human lover knocked down by the monster. She also goes all moses on the sea to free the unicorns of the world out and she is no ordinary unicorn as she is nether human or unicorn but a fusion as she is humanoid with emotions even the gift of laughter/smile plus she can consent/talk to humans. She not only heals Lir's wounds with her horn but also wakes him up with a kiss of true love which helps him be revived, he is amazed by her as she is something new and he still loves her while she still loves him. Both go to Hagsgate town where Lir's real dad is and his real dad becomes king while Lir marries his anthro humanoid unicorn person lover Amalthea then goes back to live with her in a cottage in her woods. It's a twist on typical happy endings where you don't have to be the same kind of person/different species of person to be in love, similar to Splash or the CBS Beauty and the Beast 80s show with Ron Perlman or Doctor Who's Vastra and Jenny or on Regular Show (Margot's parents) or Bojack Horseman or Eliza and Goliath on Gargoyles or Wolf Children. Afterall Lir loves who he loves which is an inspiration quote.

    I never realized why Molly was so upset until now. I finally get it. Amalthea was the last unicorn in the world. The only one that Molly would ever see. The only one that anyone would ever see. And Shmendrick goes and changes her form so that she's no longer a unicorn, meaning that there are no unicorns left in the world (free anyway).

    Wow, when I was a child, and watched this movie, I didn't understand the deeper meaning behind some of the scenes, especially this one. The Unicorn, who was essentially a immortal being; ageless and free from death, becomes trapped in a human body, which she has no understanding of.Whilst being trapped as a human, she questions herself, and her identity. It was almost like she was reborn, in a way. The longer that she was in her human form as "Amalthea", the more she slowly forgets about her true identity, and also her drive to save the other Unicorns. She now felt human emotions, such as sadness, confusion, love, and regret. At the ending of the movie, when she's finally in her true form again, she tells Schmendrick that no unicorn has been born to regret, or love like humans, and she regretted that she was back in her true form because, she truly loved Prince Lir, but could not be with him as long as she was a Unicorn. Even though she was a Unicorn again, she didn't feel truly immortal anymore, and even stated that there was now a mortal element to her being.
    I still love this movie. It's so underrated, and, even though at some times, it can be dark, it also has some amazing lessons to teach us.

      I think it was good that she was human for a time as she discovers love and her love for Prince Lir gave her the courage to stand up to the bull and free her kind. And she stated though she's now different from the other unicorns she is grateful for her human experience and it seems she's become a better and wiser Unicorn.

    The more I watch the Last Unicorn the more i pick up on so much psychology I missed as a kid. When you think about it, a near immortal being whose never truly had the capacity for emotions that most humans feel is then turned into a human would most likely create a Trauma unlike any other. The sheer tidal wave of emotions of the new physical existence, especially against their will would most likely create a HUGE mental and spiritual scar that would never be healed. One of the lines that hits me the most is at 4:15 when she expresses "I can feel this body dying all around me!" It's time she's feeling for the first time. Back in the forest her magic kept it Spring like it was always in a magic bubble where time had no place and the animals were protected by her. She feel's time in her body for the first time and it scares her to her core because she knows human fear. In a sense this movie truly personifies True Innocence that we believe Unicorns to be. This movie does an amazing job on the loss of Innocence and Purity on a psychological level no other movie has ever really achieved. This truly is a movie for the ages because it is a movie that is the Loss of Innocence and the desire to reclaim it knowing we can never truly go back to that state. It's irreversible and I am glad this movie achieves it so well.

    • @Jotari
      @Jotari  7 ปีที่แล้ว +269

      It can also be taken in a very literal sense too. She can literally feel the cells on her body dying as every second goes past. We probably can too but we just don't notice it because we've always existed that way. If you're interested, I wrote a thing about the relationship between Amalthea and Lir and how much innocence plays a part of it. It's one of the few things I don't think the movie managed to capture quite as well as the book.

      Very well written and i like the point you make about the essence of True love and how Amalthea and Lir's relationship was. I swear i hope they never remake this and if they door they stay true to the original film and book because knowing most filmmakers of today they would trash part of the script to interest the more naive and less attentive with more modern jokes and much more colorful versions of these characters. Truth be told I always thought Tim Burton would get his hands on this at one point and Helena Bohnum Carter would play Molly Grue. (personal wish)

    • @decusq
      @decusq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I guess I would have to say the writing. In The Last Unicorn Prince Lir knows that they can never truly be in love and that love at first sight doesn't really exist. It's more like innocent love, like how children perceive it. Love takes time and work, it's not something that just happens from seeing one another in an instant and happiness is guaranteed like in a classic Disney movie. While it's true other cartoons embellish the notion of Love At First Sight this movie tells the truth that although they were attracted to each other they wouldn't know if they could fall in love unless they spent more time together, time they both never had.

    Looking back as an adult and all the themes you didn't pick up on as a kid, you realize that every character and scene in this movie was about dealing with mortality and death. The magician wanting to live on in fame. Molly regretting that the unicorn never came for her when she was young. The witch knowing that the immortal harpy would always remember the human who captured her, and living forever in that way (which is why she didn't care that the harpy would escape and kill her one day). Amalthea's reaction to a human body as something "dying". Haggart thinking that a son would bring him peace of mind, and turning to coveting immortal creatures when he didn't. Haggart's rotting castle embodying something that should have accepted death long ago. The skeleton refusing to move on and living off of hollow past memories. The old cat being the only happy character because he's content with nearing the end of his life.
    The unicorn's fish out of water journey comes from her being the only one that doesn't have to experience this, and her arc comes from this scene and after. No animals in her forest can be killed by hunters. The very first creature she meets after leaving the forest is a butterfly, one of the most obvious symbols of life progressing. At the end, she knows she'll never fully fit in again with the other unicorns because she's lost that innocent naivety of not knowing mortality.

    Interesting thing from the book that isn't addressed in the movie:
    A magician transforming a unicorn into a human has happened before in-universe. There was a magician that transformed a unicorn into a human to save someone, but couldn't change him back.
    The magician ended up becoming well-known as the most powerful magician in the world, and was also Shmendrick's teacher. Because Shmendrick was so bad at magic, the magician made him immortal until he could perform powerful magic that surpassed his teacher's. Shmendrick returning Amalthea back into a unicorn is a big deal because, not only did Shmendrick gain back his mortality, he also performed magic that used to be thought of as impossible.

      Her reaction to losing immortality in a fantasy movie draws our attention to our own real life mortality. Children have so much growth and time left that they rarely even think about their mortality. Adults "die" (shrink, weaken, decay) little by little every day. The years rush by, in a race to the bottom, the end state of indifference, nothingness, thermodynamical equilibrium. And the universe, eager as a child, expands faster than light - so fast that thousands of stars effectively disappear for us every second - towards infinite emptiness... I wish you all a great day! 😄

      Apparently, in the original book, after she says that she can feel her body dying, Schmendrick tells her his backstory. Apparently he was cursed with immortality that can only go away when he masters magic and he's been living hundreds of years (probably) just wishing to be mortal again. He didn't want to hear her talk shit about being mortal because that was his entire goal.

      I can confirm this is true. Though I didn't get the impression it was hundreds of years. Just that he was a few decades beyond the 20 or 30 years he looks. I can kind of agree why they left it out of this scene since it does break the flow a little bit but it would have been good if they kept it somewhere in the movie. Mortality is a core theme of the movie and Schemdrick shows an important side to it. The bit with Marduke (the other wizard working for King Haggard who's name I've forgotten how to spell) probably would have been a good place to reference it.

      Her problem with it is that the Unicorms never really had to change. They lived in a time bubble where nothing changed. Being human means change. She's afraid about the change she's going to face and that she might face death in her form. She's not complaining about dying, she's so afraid of change and emotions that they all hit her at once, and it's a fucking punch in the stomach. Damn, Amalthea’s VA was just- ON POINT with the emotion in this scene. Just the fear that came from being struck down from her true form as a Unicorn and turned into a human woman.
    Albeit an ethereally beautiful one, but still a human. That’s honestly what I’ve always loved about the art style of this movie and how the characters are portrayed. Shmendrick, Molly, King Haggard, and even Leir are all so rough and mushy-looking and angular.
    But Lady Amalthea.. She almost looks like some sort of Fae woman. As she very rightly should for being a former unicorn. Something bright and so tragically beautiful to look at, in a world that was already so beautiful and tragic to begin with. The end of the Golden Ages of fantasy, where Unicorns and Magic were a dying source of wonder and awe.
    No wonder Leir fell in love with her, and no wonder Haggard almost recognized her for what she was from the moment he saw her. Hell, I cried right along with Molly the first time this scene’s message really hit me.

    While Farrow’s crushing delivery on her lines in this scene is emotional enough, Molly’s pain for her transformation is too. I think it’s been greatly misunderstood.
    Yes, the world has now “lost” its last unicorn, and it’s a tragedy to the story. But for Molly, the tragedy is greater in that she has become a human girl. Not just human, but a woman. Remember their first meeting where she curses Amalthea for coming to her now in her old age, knowing that the only use she is now is a cook that no one appreciates. She lost her wonder and lust for life as she discovered the truths of being a woman. How dare a unicorn come to her now when she has already forfeit her happiness.
    The tragedy is that now Amalthea will also have to endure that horrible truth.

    The fate of the unicorn is so sad at the end, she accomplished everything she set out to do but deeply regrets the loss of her human form. Even after becoming immortal again she still had a mortal heart and no one who she could share it with. This unsettling feeling follows her to the end of time when she realizes her human friends had long since died and feels the crawl of time even as she forgets its existence. The movie ends happily in comparison to the book.

    When I was little I didn't understand why Molly and the unicorn were so mad at him for changing her into a human to save her, but now I think I do. I believe it's because unicorns are the most pure and innocent animals who are incapable of turning evil, while (most) humans are more hateful, arrogant and greedy than any other living creature. So her being turned into a human is, to her, the same as having her innocence taken away and being defiled. As now she has become something not so pure and easily corruptible.

      @@freelands8355 I want to push back on it being "bragging" per se. Schmendrick was being a bit self-absorbed, but consider his position: A man who has lived his entire life as being a third rate magician at best who can only do cheap parlor tricks with nary a drop of true magic in him. Sure there was the scene with Robin Hood beforehand but to a great degree he refused to believe that was anything more than a fluke. Him being able to get magic to come at all and do as he wanted felt entirely out of reach.
      That changed when he transformed the Unicorn into Amalthea. He realized it was not a fluke. That he could indeed call upon the powers of magic and have it respond. He couldn't control it, not yet. But it was possible. Not 5 minutes before he thought him being capable of any form of magic was utterly impossible, and had lead his entire life being convinced of that. You can see it in how he constantly belittles his own capability as a magician. This was a turning point, and he recognized that everything he believed about his own capabilities was a lie. This also meant that he could only improve and get better. He wasn't bragging about his own greatness. He was excited about his own *potential*. This was the first true and major sign that he was capable of being far more than a two-bit, third rate magician.

    I for one thought it was a good life lesson for the unicorn to become human. immortal beings look down on mortal beings because they don't understand what is it to be mortal. she needed to learn regret, remorse, real sorrow as until now she's been indifferent to the suffering around her. I get it i do i wouldn't what my form to be changed so completely. but that bull would have driven her into the ocean and then there would be no saving the unicorns.
    And her companions can manage just fine with their bodies constantly dying around them. you don't see them crying about it! especially schemdrick who's been frozen in time with a mortal yet not body. i imagine it's perpetual for him feeling his body dying and then being regenerated so it's the same yet different and he's not making such a fuss.
    and later had she just looked for the other unicorns instead of spending weeks complaining about being human she'd have been back in her natural form much, much sooner. i almost felt like this transformation was the magic force feeding her a slice of humble pie after how callous she had been throughout the entire movie.
    I legitimately thought when i first saw this movie when i was little: "are all immortal things such crybabies? if she stopped complaining for like five seconds they could be done and she'd be a unicorn again. does she somehow not know that?"

      I totally agree. Even though she never knew what human pain felt like, she needed it least learn that this is what being a mortal is like. To everyone saying Molly was unfair -- she probably expected defensive or offensive magic against the Bull, not transformational magic against the Unicorn. She had no reason to expect Schmendrick to shape-shift the last (free) Unicorn in the world into a comparatively powerless, vulnerable and very not-immortal human girl, and was understandably shocked, angry and mournful. Even before she saw how upset the former-Unicorn was over being trapped in an aging human body (with a built-in expiration date even without any outside harm done to it) and suddenly being without access to her formidable horn and hooves.

    • @iprobablyforgotsomething

      @@Jotari True. Still, somehow, her being made human seems more shocking. A talking (or at least unicorn/human level sentient) animal still retains a sense of the unworldly about it, plus whatever natural defenses the animal has. Whereas humanity is so fragile and ordinary -- as far as from a unicorn as can get -- that I can understand why Molly must've felt she saw the last bit of innocence and good magic in the world die in front of her.
      .
      Not that she doesn't later try to make Schmendrick leave Amalthea as human, lol, but her loyalty was to Amalthea/the Unicorn's happiness, above even her own sense of happiness at beholding a unicorn.
      .
      Although speaking of happiness, and to digress a bit... I still blame Molly a bit for Amalthea's troubles to begin with, in that the Unicorn owed no mere man her regard or even kindness, especially when he was trying to court her -- and nobody owes anyone a pity-date -- when the Unicorn was there on a mission; instead she should've keep her nose out of it (not her style, admittedly) or discouraged Lir. Amalthea might not've developed feelings for him if she'd never given him a chance. But then, I guess, the ending would've been different, and maybe a worse one of all unicorns lost forever, eh?
