I think the aim of this particular experiment should be: Experiment to show that osmosis between solutions of different concentration. Because there was no movement of water molecules in set-up B since the concentration of the water in the cavity is the same as that of the water trough.
To show that osmosis occurs in a living tissue, one of the yarn cups needs to be boiled in order to kill the cells in the yarn thereby making that particular yam cup a non permeable membrane. With that, you can put salt solution in the two cavities and after the end of the experiment, there will be no movement of water in the boiled yam cup since it's not a living tissue.

Why are we pilling the yam?

The reason is that, if the yams are not peeled, water will not be able to permeate(enter) into the yam hence making it a non-permeable membrane.
