  • Welcome to Rooting Mindfully. My name is Ayana. Today I am doing a video on how many plants is too many and when it is time to let a plant go. This question I have posed to my self throughout my journey and it has also been asked of me so I decided to make this video. I hope you enjoy it.

my "too many" plants is when my shelves look cluttered and not spaced out enough.

I need to get rid of some plants because right now, there are so many that they are making the house look cluttered. Plants should enhance the way a home looks, but right now, my plants are taking up every inch of windowsill in the good windows, and we can’t close the blinds or easily open and close the windows. I had to move them to a different room this week because we’re painting, and I can’t deny that the room looks better without the army of plants crowding the windows. So my plan is to downsize to keep some of the more attractive statement plants and arrange them nicely, keep some of my “just because I enjoy watching them grow” plants in our spare bedroom, and get rid of the ones that don’t make the cut.

This is truly one of the best houseplant videos. I've been growing houseplants for around 34 years now. This year was the year of hell in my growing experience. Thrips (and I never had thrips before!!) Lost 7 plants, 2 favorites. Almost lost my favorite. Mom had surgery, needed to help her. 2 more plants going down hill after repot. So upsetting. This year I am thinking about buying nicer pots for some of my remaining plants and maybe 1 plant stand but No New Plants! Maybe 1 but no more. You are right, it can get to you after awhile. Not many videos about the truth in growing houseplants. You just about covered it. 👍🌱

I always enjoy watching your videos. Great advice. I am under 50 plants and that for me "50" is my limit. Knowing your limit is key, because the care and upkeep can be overwhelming at times. Please Ayana, when you feel the need to declutter, and want to rid yourself of some of your plants. Please hold a lottery, I will pay for shipping if I win 😁

You made perfect sense about everything I do stupid things like keep buying plants I know I can’t grow just because I like them so much lol I’m like you if it doesn’t do well I get rid of it I have 160 plants and I’m 71 years old and don’t have time to deal with it thank you for sharing

great video topic, it is very subjective depending on one's lifestyle, patience level, time management, space, etc. I currently have around 85 (mostly easygoing, beginner to intermediate level) plants, down from my high of maybe 105 or so, but two plants would absolutely be tooooooo much for say, my mom 🤣🤣
i think when it becomes not fun anymore to do the day to day maintenance/checking on them, or when it becomes an extreme chore that takes up like hours of your day - you might have a few too many and might need to reconnoiter. it should be a relaxing hobby, not any kind of stressful. because i'm definitely with you in that i will cut my losses on an unhappy, non salvageable plant in a hearbeat

I hear you. I am struggling with anthurium, the velvet texture ones. They were so expensive etc and I can only keep clarinervium happy. If by the end of 2022 my other velvet anthurium are not thriving, I will try and gift them to my city botanical garden... I would do that now, but giving away something that cost me a 100+ is not easy.

It is a personal preference... I have 26 plants inside my house and that is enough... for me my space is starting to feel cluttered.... 😌 I also have 25 on my front porch and I don't know how much I have on my back patio.... to each his/her own

Thank you! This is just what I needed to hear. My collection has gotten too big and overwhelming. But I feel so guilty for not “saving a plant” or letting go of plants I no longer love when in reality we pull weeds, eat salads, clear ground for housing etc without batting an eye. This will help me to declutter, let go of plants that just continue too struggle for too long or I no longer have a passion for and make life easier!

I only have 25 plants, but soon 30 lol. I am trying not to go over. I think I need to just collect snake plants, because they seem to do well wherever I put them. They are still growing and thriving. Although they aren’t as fun to watch as other plants, but I am way too lazy for fussy/diva plants. Thanks for or the video! Happy New Year! We made it! Hopefully this year will be stress and worry free!

Winter is frustrating, 4 good hours of sun between sunrise and total darkness.. That is when some plants leave on their own or go dormant. Places by a nice window are limited and the electric bill increases without using more. Plants sitting next to a fish tank, the kitchen sink or where we hang out are benefitting from the lights... we use. A nightlight and the use of a light in the bath, seems to be enough for some orchids for a while. Sickly-looking plants are hard to live with but due to finances, it is hard to discard them. I am glad that I fought a stressy battle with some pests because the plant is coming back to life. Do you think that spending money on anything in excess, is a self-treatment for depression or lonliness? The hunt for plants is so fun! It takes your mind to a nice place. A scientific experiment on one sort of plant, can teach you so much and you experience success. Too many experiments with plants which need different conditions is often too much. Also, all the equipment you'd like to purchase does not fit into an apartment. The sinks are not made for gardening fans, so there we are with a challenge for sure. Ideally, 'enough' would be plants all placed aesthetically in a roomy home but instinctively, I always wanted the inside to look like the outside.. a lush jungle. Then you try to solve problems by propagating. My Aunt had 1 tiny plant, a Palm, on her kitchen table. It always looked great. My Aunt's Aunt had huge Philodendrons on one windowsill in her sunroom. They were beautiful and the shelf was always clean. I think that it depends on your age, energy level, your time at work or school, your finances, your curiousity and if you are a TH-camr or not. You need less of everything as you get older because daily chores are enough and other intangible things have greater value for you than a hobby which grows into something huge if you let it. If you can, think about what you can manage easily, before you begin and then be honest enough to adjust to change. Watch this video again, it's a good one.

I started to stop actively getting at around 55 varieties of plant mark.
Then it balanced out, and I think now 48 varieties (and thriving)

I have plants on every window ledge, apart from the kitchen which is probably too volatile an environment for them. All my personal plants have a story, I'd not like so many that I didn't 'know' them. Sounds odd when I say it out loud 😅
