    The Maxell UDS-II was an excellent tape. I bought a pack of 10 in the 80s, I still have them.

    I love this channel. Hard to find kindred spirits who remember experiences and experimentation with all these different cassettes. It was like cooking and trying to find how the ingredients affected the taste of the meal. Love ya Tony. Keep it up!

    These were workhorses. I used the UDII as my go to tape to record anything on. They had the right balance between accurate and color. And they are reliable, store them right and no degradation. I miss those tapes, I really do. One of those things I would like to bring back from the good years.

      The one I recorded on was one I bought used, with unknown history. Still sounded good 😀 I think 1985 was Maxells best year. They were all tough as nails and the MX was spectacular.

      I've had bad modern UR's that basically wouldn't move when trying to move by hand and when put in a tape deck it would barely move, that's how I managed to ruin a Philips tape deck...

      The best Maxell UR is the 1985 and the 1988 editions and they’re all US made. The US version of the 1985 Maxell UR had “Japan Components (Assembled in R. Korea)”, just like what it was used in the 1977 and 1982 Maxell LN.

    i found some of those UD II's not that long ago in a thrift shop. the best part was that they were never printed on. i was using those UR tapes alot when i was young. i only got one left from back then. that's really awesome that you got so many of these tapes still sealed. i rarely find old sealed blank tapes in thrift shops. but when i do. i usually cannot bring myself to opening them.

    The UDS-II was my preferred cassette of choice. Admittedly, my initial attraction was the looks. The gold and red really stood out. This was also around the time that I learned about the different types of cassettes.
    I stuck with the UDS-II until they redesigned it to a basic black shell. At that point, I'd get either Maxell or TDK type II. I did try a type IV once and honestly didn't notice enough difference between type IV and II. The tpe IV also seemed to be more prone to getting eaten by the deck.

    My dad had a UDS-II with Michael Martin Murphy’s Blue Sky-Night Thunder on it. I popped it into an Onkyo TA-2700 and holy cow was I blown away. This old beat up tape was still whisper quiet and rather than sounding average on my Pioneer CTW600R, I was actively hearing problems with the record player used to record onto the deck.

    This mid-eighties form factor evokes very strong memories. I swiped one or two XLII's from my mom and absolutely cherished them. I remember when the first oval-window version of the XLII came out (with the spoked reels). I loved that look even more. I had a couple of them, but really could not afford high bias tapes back then. Later I had a bit more money and could afford them, but by then they had switched to black hubs (still nice, though). Then they went to that awful grey shell and I switched to TDK SA. :p Funny how important the look of the shell was to me.

    • @CassetteComeback
      @CassetteComeback  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "The first bite is with the eye" Shell design is a big thing. If you think about it, cassettes are the only home media format which differs visually by more than the label.

    I love the look of the UD-IIs for sure, came into a whole lot of them a few years ago along with some XL-IIs of the same (shiny, reflective) era. Can't get enough of them.

    Loving this little channel. And the deck collection. You've got a nice variety. Actually seeing what bias and gain does real time on a three head deck is awesome. There's very few decks of your quality in Australia. And almost everything here is duel well. My two record decks (both have hx-pro) are humble mid-level two head units. My original deck (I've always owned) a pioneer with fixed bias, I modded so that bias is now externally adjustable and mpx can be turned off. Wish I'd known this back in the day. Made a big difference. However its still a pain to go back and forth till you get it right. So I recently picked up a mid level dolby-s sony with auto cal that I've rebuilding so that it can become my new record deck workhorse. Great stuff. This is a fun hobby. Really enjoying these vids.

    • @CassetteComeback
      @CassetteComeback  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are the words; "fun" and "hobby". Yeah, I had no idea about bias and level calibration back in the day.this is why others that still don't, don't understand the appeal...they never head a good cassette recorded well in a good deck.

    The UDS/UD II was one of my favorite tapes in the mid-late 80's. Some of the record stores where I lived then (Wichita Kansas) were selling them as little as $2 to $2.50 each. From what I've read online they were created for decks that were set to TDK SA bias standards. The XL II were my favorite for new CD's but the UDS/UD II were great for 60's/70's analog recorded CD's and vinyl. I copied all the then-new Beatles CD's to them and my brother and I played those tapes over and over but we could never wear the tape out. There's a used record store in Tyler TX that has a big cassette rack of used tapes, and I always grab them when they show up. Some church or minister was using them for sermons and most are in great shape with the liner card untouched.

    • @CassetteComeback
      @CassetteComeback  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, not many people talk about these, but all those who used them have a lot of love for them. In the video I try and show that they were designed to work well in decks calibrated for SA as that's my theory too.

    • @wildbilltexas
      @wildbilltexas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CassetteComeback They were seen as a cheap tape by some tape snobs, and Maxell was hell bent on promoting the XL II as their #1 tape here in the USA. BTW I really liked dual cassette decks. I was a radio DJ in the mid 90's and they were handy for pause editing and copying airchecks. I have a JVC TD-W709 deck with two recording decks built in, and last year I found a JVC TD-W209 for 19 dollars at goodwill in great shape. I wish they had bias controls but they record fine on most tapes.

      I have some UDS-II tapes, not UDII. The Maxell UDS-II was a US version of UDII, but the UDII came from Japan. The XLII cassette is way better than UDS-II or UDII, and it sounds exactly the same.

    Some months ago at a thrift store I found a 5 pack of 1985 Maxell UR and a 5 pack of late 80s Sony HF, still sealed and in great working order (no moldy tape, no cracked cases, etc). I know they are both entry level cassettes but I find them amazing and, more important, I payed just 20€ for both packs!

    What I like about this channel is how much it demonstrate that tape cassettes can sound good. I have learned a lot about bias and level and now I understand how important it is. Each tapes formulation have a specific bias adjustment and level. When you can adjust that the recordings on a tape can be very superb. At this date I am trying to get my hand on a tape Deck that will offer me Bias adjustment, level adjustment and also Dolby S (Yep! I like that noise reduction system) and has 3 heads. My first attempt well the motor is broken of the TC-K615S. I found a player the motor is working (apparently) but it stops so there is a chance that there is a probleme with the mechanism but the motor is ok. So I will have the first one services by taking the motor from the other. I will use a Double Pioneer tape deck auto reverse with Dolby S to play the tapes although that tape deck can auto adjust the bias and level, it has limitation and cannot adjust the pure chrome ones correctly therefore that tape deck will be used only as a playback device if I can get the TC-615S to work and I am looking foward for that day.

    Since you mention both TDK SA and Maxell XLII, both types were considered to be some kind of industry standard. I remember reading manuals for early Yamaha and Teac(?) portable studios that recorded 4 channels on cassettes. So both SA and XLII were recommended by the manufacturers for achieving optimal quality.

    0:40 is the 1985 UR that I still have a bunch of them for recording music and old time radio.
    0:50 is the TDK D all-clear cassette which was the international version which was made for the UK and Canada, the US version of the TDK D was in an all-black shell, but the all-clear shell didn’t come out in the US until 1988. TDK also did the 1975 and 1979 D in a “True Mechanism” version with an all-clear shell which was a counterfeit item.

    Around 2013, I recorded the XLII in a Teac V-350C, which is a relatively cheap deck from around 1983/1984 with 2 heads and no calibration facilities at all. I was stunned that this cassette sounded better than anything else in this deck, almost no difference to the source at all, and a tiny bit of higher level on the recording than on the source. That still surprises me today.

    The UDII was the counterpart to the SD - both had that gold/red theme. I generally stayed with the entry ferrics - D's, HF-S' and UR's. They play fantastic on my Denon DRS-810 sidewinder. Really like those AIWA decks you got there, though!

    I once had a Aiwa record player what was my first record player back when my record collection started in around about 2011 with full auto stop that was faulty , as when I hit start/stop to stop the stylus would go back to its resting place then back to the middle to the record , drop onto the record then it would scratch my records as it went back once it went back to the middle of the record then dropped onto the record.

      Only analogue tape formats have character and variables, that makes it unique among consumer recording formats. Digital formats all sound the same, regardless of what media you use. So are the varied appearances. DATs all look the same, but if an analogue cassette looks cheap, it probably performs badly too.

    UDS II and UDS I are my favourite tapes. Those, plus UD, LN, and D were nothing to sneeze at. I still use all of those to this day. UDS-II was created for really good pressed albums, digital LPs and catalog CD's. UDS-I was for crappy pressed albums and really shitty CDs. They all sound better on those.

      Is the head partially rotated? One thing I noticed on mine was a crack in the gear that rotates the head. The crack appears to be in a harmless location, but the mechanism was off by one tooth when I took it apart and so the head would not rotate completely. I suspect this may happen again on mine even though it appears to work fine at the moment.
