Been dreaming about thru hiking the AT since I first learned such a thing existed in 1999. This year, I am happy to say my son and I will be stepping off in late April. Thanks for all your vids, man, because they have been one of the many wonderful things about hiking that have kept the spirit alive in me.
Wider pots heat more efficiently than narrow cups. I have both in titanium. The MSR Titan is a great size. A cup like my Snow Peak only works well with a stove with a narrow burner. I found this out when I switched to a homemade alcohol stove. In hot weather I sometimes switch to Esbit tabs, when I don't really cook. Oddly enough, my first hike of the Georgia AT, in 2006, I used only Esbit tabs and the ultralight tab holder they made at the time. My most recent addition is a Cnoc water bag. Well worth the small expense. Having enough water for camp at night, in the morning, and the first few miles on trail without having to make multiple trips to the water source (especially in Pa.) makes it a keeper.
I found your channel shortly after coming across dixies. While I enjoy her videos, I seem to relate to your style more. After her gear review, I thought to myself, I hope Kyle does the same thing in the future. Interesting how that works, lol.
This is awesome. I backpack with a lot of used gear and random stuff I’ve found in lost and found bins and etc. got my puffy in one lol and got my pack as a gift, even though it’s a little older and heavier and use a $6 10x10 1lb tarp and a cut Walmart ccf pad for shelter. I try to stick as light as possible but price out weighs the weight for me overall, (except my new HG Econ which I’m stoked about) being thrifty and making things work is very satisfying.
I wanted to tell you I got the free LMNT sample pack and it’s the best tasting electrolyte mix I’ve ever used. And it makes me feel AMAZING. I just ordered two boxes of it and I’m super pumped. 😄
Still here in Bum-fuck south, I got the Hammock Gear EBC quilt, 20 Deg. Wide also and it was one of the best things I ever bought, super warm and comfy, the absolute best. Thanks for the info, peace and good tidings from the Conejo.
I had some Darn Tough socks (I actually still have them, just don’t wear them anymore) - then I tried a pair of Silverlight and have never looked back. They are so good I actually use them as my everyday socks at work (where I stand most, if not all, of the day).
Love the gear mentality. It was the same as mine. Didn't have my gear all the way dialed in to the point where I was comfortable going all in on a frameless pack... So I hiked the whole thing with my first pack, a 45L Ozark Trail from ye olde Walmart. Also, hammock life FTW. Nice editing, btw. ;)
::The following is brought to you by a lifelong Southeastern Kentuckian:: It always takes me a second to realize where people are talking about when they say “Apple-ayshuh” or “Apple-ayshun.” 😂 Even though the place was literally written in the title of the vid and I knew the trail you meant, it still threw me off a little when you pronounced it that way! Excellent info here. The AT can get pretty diverse (read: the weather and terrain could meet criteria for schizophrenia).
Order yourself a food bag from Hilltop Packs, they can even put your logo or picture on the bag. I recently bought mine. If you wash that quilt now, it might fall apart (the dirt is holding the stitches together 😉). Have you ever tried the CNOC water bags?
Just got some lmnt drinks (in australia didn't go through your link, someone was already selling them here). Chocolate one was nice, didn't dissolve very well though. Haven't tried the others yet but I got some of each.
Its a good idea to reevaluate your gear after every season. Especially if you happen to be planning a trip to the place you hinted on. Can't wait to see that trip.
I saw the palmetto state flag. Let’s see what you can teach me . I have the bug. I turning 66 soon I am in good shape physically. I think I going to start off 100 miles maybe 200 mile hikes.
Not sure if you’ve used the Zingit line or not, but my experience is that it bunches up on itself and tangles easy, and if you get a knot in it it’s a bitch to undue, esp. in cold, wet conditions.
@@KyleHatesHiking I ended up putting a carabiner on both ends. One for the bag and one for my belt. I can't tell you how many times the whole line slipped through my fingers and ended up going over the branch with the bag. You finally get the perfect throw and then oh crap, no, aaaargh. At least I never lost the line I guess.
I ordered the LMNT sample pack. Kind of salty but I guess that’s the idea; I’ll bet it goes well with tequila. No artificial sweetener in it, so no shitty aspartame taste.
I got a sample pack last week. Have only tried citrus. I really like it so far Make sure you mix it really well. First 3/4 was the best mix it yourself sport drink I’ve ever tasted. Last 1/4 was like drinking salt water.
At one point Dixie was a little Kyle. You'll get there one day, bro. I think one day you will just wake up and notice all your videos are spiking like a mfer. It seems thats how it always happens to the youtubers who grind out videos as often as you do. You deserve it, bud. Thanks for all the work. You should do a video on the foods you eat and cook while on the trail. You may have already done one, sorry if you have, I will find it eventually lol
Proper footgear ~ I saw you had socks on your clothing list, but I could never see any boots or boot weights. My backpacking pet peeve is people who wear sandals on hazard-filled trails that will leave you lame and dependent on someone else to get you out of the backcountry. I have had to help a couple of sandal wearers back to the trailhead, thus shooting my weekend in the foot, pun intended. Sandals don't protect your feet or toes or provide ankle support. Trails are filled with sharp angular rocks, loose rocks, tree roots, and downed timber with sharp branch staubs, just waiting to twist ankles or injure feet and cause a possible infection. Wear proper foot gear (socks/boots) to protect and support your feet/ankles and get you home without incident. Save your sandals for the beach, LOL.

Lol that is funny. Dixie is awesome though!
I agree. I feel like Kyle is just shooting the shit, which I enjoy more than heavily produced videos these days.

Thanks so much for supporting LMNT! It seriously helps my channel so much.
Those socks are the best! I order them for my husband, they are his favorite.
I DON’T EVEN HIKE. Why did I sub to you?! Personality. Comedic aspect of vids.. that must be it. 😝
Lmao thank you!
Glad you didn't steal DB's and pick a 2022 winter load out vid today! Love Dixie

Right there with ya on the AWOL guide, got mine in the mail a few days ago for this year! Good luck on the PCT! Can’t wait to see the videos 😁
It's got color pics this year! And some weird code you punch in on the website to access websites of the hostels and stuff.
Thank you!
At least you’re honest about your theft 😂😂 love you Kyle
Love u

Can't wait to see the PCT videos.

Nice video man, really helpful. Definitely great channel man.

See you on the PCT.
You got your start date?
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling Trail Magic this year.
From this moment forward I expect spreadsheets and graphs in your upcoming videos.
If I ever do my own video like this, I’m gonna start by saying that I’m ripping off you AND Dixie. But seriously … thanks for the info and humor

I already have a hilltops bag.
Great Sharing! Lot of love and respect from a solo mountain hiker from the Lower Chitral District of Pakistan.
🤘🤘
No idea what those hiking plans could be, 🤔 but for some reason I am excited.
me too!
FYI…they totally still sell the chill gorilla! I still use one of their smaller square tarps for nice weather.
Oh nice! That's chill
I Love Dixie!!
Good ol Dixie. Great video :)
Thanks Chad!
U go Kyle! The eye darting outro 🤨😀
😂😂
nice light pack😃
Question about the AT not including the gear how much money you need to bring
So, PCT?
Darn toughs have become my everyday socks too. They're so comfy; why not?
Do they wear well? Last well?
Darn Tough is the shit
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling yeah and I’m pretty sure that they have a lifetime warranty too, it’s definitely a top tier brand!
I did the math….lol how exciting!
Woohoo!
How much food do you pack
" back in the day....." 2018, lol. Entertaining vid Kyle.

I do use it and I've never had any issues. It can be a little hard to grip sometimes

I swear we went through the same phase. When I first got into this crap I looked at all the same stuff. The chill gorilla tarp gave me ptsd
Lmao it did keep me dry at least
Will you be getting a NovaPro jacket from Outdoor Vitals before the PCT? Any thoughts on the weave vs stitching?
Not sure about the jacket, and I don't know shit about stitching haha
@Kyle Hates Hiking you should look it up. The fabric is woven, no stitching, hence no leaking and more windproof.
calific fest fail? Man that´s awesome. I hope you enjoy the Continental Divide Trail.
I'm actually hiking the Northville Placid Trail again
@@KyleHatesHiking I highly assume you do a jojo hike?
I got the free LMNT sample pack, tried a couple of them and so far so good.
Also that’s nasty, wash your bag!
Glad you like them! Will not wash my bag lol
I was gonna go out backpacking in Utah but my stuff just got stolen from my car :(
I ordered the LMNT sample pack. Kind of salty but I guess that’s the idea; I’ll bet it goes well with tequila. No artificial sweetener in it, so no shitty aspartame taste.
Thanks for ordering!
The raspberry flavored LMNT hides the saltiness pretty well, it’s the only flavor I drink anymore.
I got a sample pack last week. Have only tried citrus. I really like it so far
