    Awesome video ! Another thing you can do is add carbon material to the pen if you can get it . This is the easiest way though .

    Great tip especially if you don't use deep mulch bedding (adding as it is soiled). Mulch (wood chips) works for most animal pens.

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We used to use deep bedding on concrete but on dirt the pigs just root and mix it into the dirt even if it's over a foot deep . We still use it in calf sheds and for poultry but eventually it has to be cleaned out and the smell is a lot worse I think it works better up north but the heat an humidity down here works against it

    Thank you for this tip. We just have two pigs, their poop doesnt smell at all but their urine smells of ammonia. The neighbor started complaining since we keep them by the fence line. Hopefully this should cut the smell back. We only really notice it when the ground is wet and the urine can’t dry up or drain properly

    Hey chris , what is the best way to handle the manure if you must keep smells down, also need more basic info on how to raise pigs step by step like shots that are a must, preventative health care , dewormers best products to.use etc, i like your channel but need a step by step think it would help even more people out there who like me never even been around a pig. Yeah i seen the lime pellets video, i guess like u said it aint rocket science but when u have zero experience that is what it feels like ya know, plus i worry to dam much, what if u don't keep it sanitized right, or what if they were sick how quick will i catch it, even then what the hell would i do, and so on, i guess u get my drift, seems like it could get overwhelming if things didnt go to smooth, so im guessing shovel it out compost it or just put hay over the pile and let it break down? Hey chris thanks for the response, i appreciate it, this would be easyier if i just knew one person who does it.

      Quick lime isn't normally sold for any agricultural purpose.maybe to cover a diseased area . It's caustic where activated or powdered lime is just limestone

    What about the wallows? The only times I can smell the pen from the house is in the early spring when everything is damp and muddy for a couple weeks from snow melt and in the heat of the summer sometimes the wallow gets a bit rank. Supposed to be cooling down pretty soon where I live, hopefully I can let the wallows dry out and lime them. For some reason it seems worse this year, this has been the 1st summer the odor has been bad enough to keep me from wanting to sit out in my yard.

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's probably not illegal buts it's definitely inconsiderate . He could lime the pens at least and maybe rotate the pigs around some to let everything dry out . If you were there before the pigs a call to animal control might help , laws are different everywhere and zoning has a lot to do with it . I would try to talk to him first and see if he was willing to improve the situation best as possible anyway. I've found that being neighborly makes better neighbors than fences as long as you're dealing with reasonable people,. He should care that his livestock is hurting your ability to use your property if he's any kind of decent guy
