Intelligent people having a forthright discussion in a casual setting. This is where it's at, guys. The juxtaposition of deep-thinker Patsy and comedian David at home in the unpretentious sitting room is pure magic in the shallow waters of TH-cam. Well done all, especially to Patsy for being such a great sport. More, please.
That was unbelievably amazing and captivating interview guys and Hanna, the late late wouldnt have a look in ! Patsy told me about alot of stuff i never new about, one of your best guests so far! Fair play to ye Patsy, come back sometime!
This was a brilliant episode with a really entertaining and interesting guest. Sometimes when reading the Irish Times, I used to think that McGarry was not critical enough of the Catholic Church. I was surprised to learn that he is an agnostic, I wouldn't have expected that from the Religious Affairs Correspondent of the Irish Times. A lot of very good points made by David, Hannah, and Jack too. Keep it up. An interview with Fintan O'Toole would be a good one.
What a brilliant choice of guest especially since McSavage savaged the Catholic religion in The Savage Eye. It’s so refreshing to see a guest that’s not just a fellow comedian. More of this please 🔥
There was ample food available to feed the Irish. But the British were determined to make the Irish suffer. It was genocide not famine. We really need to drop the word famine FFS 😂
This is orders of magnitude better the last pod, which was, frankly, a disaster. I think this is a much better template for the podcast: an intelligent, deep discussion (still with some humour in the mix) with a very knowledgeable guest. I think you need to try and stop relentlessly chasing the (increasingly dumbed down) cultural zeitgeist and carve out your own niche. David’s comedy is intrinsically a darker, thought provoking, boundary pushing, offensive (to some) proposition and is basically intellectual in character. The pods should reflect this more. Also, it might be worth considering taking more time to produce them and releasing less regular but higher quality pods.
In primary school the teacher used to shove my head into a shelf with the times table book about 2 inches from my face with my arse cocked to the rest of the class. I could be bent over for 30 minutes like that. It created a mental block with regards to mathematics for the rest of my life. But there’s a million stories like mine if you were born in the 60’s..
Yeah corporal punishment was commonplace. Sure I was physically abused in primary school and even in secondary school I was punched in the face by the metalwork teacher. No safe spaces then for snowflake students. I told my woodwork teacher that the metalwork teacher had punched me in the face making my lip bleed and he just told me to get on with my work 😂
Couldn't watch after praise for Fintan O Toole at the start, bet the great John Waters wasn't mentioned. To say O Toole has challenged the consensus is laughable.
Big opportunity lost, for all the stone throwers with fake beards. Overall, well done, it went as willed, for the guest never felt like taking the topic deeper. You left the dignity and respect intact, you be a good ol' Irish mammys young man, dead old now a course, in yer late fifties. Lovely guest, well versed man. Who happened to write through, the most incredible times of this country's crisis with religion. I went to funerals of older people, these past three years. So many went to the next world without religion, because of the past 20 year religious fiasco roller-coastering. The particulars were left out in the conversation. If you didn't, then the guest surely knew, all the pivotal times when the Irish faith fell further. He got off a bit lightly with the knowledge he has accumulated, but then again, must ha be'n brickin' it, gettin' interviewed by a comedian. I do understand if it went full on, no one would wanna guest with you in the future. So Catch 22. But there is more hatred for the church, that was never brought up. Much of the Oldies in Irish went ta ground sad/mad and without a priests blessing. Most of my generation have not been hynotized, just feel the older groups shout from on shoulder. The churches continued fiasco, regarding care homes and church closing these past 4 years was also left unsaid. Come 'ere ta me lad says you, did someone forget ta tell ya, it's a comedy channel, cryin' out loud like. Yer right there Ted. Well then says I........ Benny Hill shoulda been introduced, he's the real devil who brought down the church from the 70s, single handedly. And well you know it. Go'night and go'luck. Keep pushing boundaries. Coming inta gemini season, are all we. It's gonna get topical from here on out. Strap in and podcast accordingly. Shine on all crazy diamonds.
It is funny that he prefers the worship of the body over the spiritual. David, like many today, seems overly focused on the body: sex, physical upkeep of the body, which he describes as a type of worship. I think this is actually an unhealthy aspect of life today. We need greater meaning in our lives.
With respect. As a Catholic the ignorance here is difficult to listen to. Credit to David for apologiesing for the ignorance. If you really want answers talk to an actual Catholic. Mcgarry is in the ballpark however he is not a believer. He stands on the outside looking in. From my perspective it is Mcgarry's generation that have some of the most significant blind spots with the Catholic faith (they have a staunch resistance to orthodoxy and they have acted as gatekeepers to give it no place in our culture facilitating the ignorance of the following generations) and when that generation have passed on I expect a certain level of a resurgance here.

McGarry is obviously an expert on religious affairs but he’s completely wrong about the Catholic Church continuing to survive except maybe in places like Africa. Once the generation before mine die off they’re fucked. Mass attendance had dropped off exponentially year on year..
Wrong again. The Church was established by Christ, Who promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against her. No matter how many crooked Bishops or abusive priests there are, the Church will continue. The traditional Church is thriving.

I like the way that, even at age 58, David has a lot of respect for his "elders" and is always ready to listen to them.
