Woody, thank for the Epic Carport. I love the idea of using the pergola concept to collect rain water (stacking). I also appreciate being introduced to the term Earth Repairian, what a great field of study that would be to credential people. I love your energy and sense of humor as well as the concise delivery. Keep the green dream alive!
Thank you that is good to hear cuz some folks seem to think i'm on crack :) I'm just having fun spreading the good news while trying not to take myself too seriously. Seriously thank you for your positive light! Carpe Diem!
freedomsolarpower.com installed the panels. Standing seam metal roof can be installed by any reputable roofing contractor in your area. Rain tanks came from www.metalraintanks.com
We don't believe they do in any amount that is significant however that is the reason we didn't choose an asphalt roof which leaches chemicals in a fairly rapid pace as do plastic rain water tanks.
They work great is Southern California!!! You can start by checking on your address and direction for maximum solar gain here www.google.com/get/sunroof
I was hoping you would show how to use solar panels directly for rainwater collection. It seems redundant to have a metal roof that you mostly cover with solar panels that are mostly water flow resistant. For your purposes, I guess it is good enough for the space of the carport to be used for two uses. But I'm building a camping trailer, and I want to accomplish those two purposes with no wasted weight.
The panels also shade the roof so it is probably 10 degrees cooler under the roof than before. More functions stacked. Let us know how your project is going! Any photos or video you can share?
That’s tricky to do. Normally you have gutters to gather the water along the bottom edge, the gutters are attached to the facial of the roof. But there’s no facial with panels, unless you keep the frame on & even the frame isn’t structural enough to hang gutters off. There’s car port kits, like Chiko USA has, which have vertical gutters & a frame you might be able to hang gutters off of. That setup also provides good shade, full water shielding, but it’s repurposed material like here (might be partially recycled steel, steel is actually fairly green depending on source, still not as hardcore as Woody aims at)
Doing all the work myself and using reuse materials really helps out. I also shopped hard for the rain water tank and got a deal. Also received a $7500 tax credit for solar array and $3000 credit with local utility we used for recycle, water and other services. Payback period was about 6 years.
Great informative video! Do you have another video on the building of this port? It's identical to the idea I had for what I want to build in my patio. I live in San Antonio TX and I want to harness some solar power for my house and a future EV. Thank you, Sir!
@@earthrepairian333 I am ready to start building with a friend; thank you also for sharing the info on your metal water tank on another video, they are magnificent and also what I was looking for. I created a 3d model of the patio and pergola and will share it on a video. I'll make sure to give you credit and let you know.
Really cool system...BUT GET OFF THE MODULES! Standing, kneeling, or otherwise putting pressure points on solar modules leads to micro fracturing, which causes lower efficiency and shorter life.
We chose SunPower because the had the most efficiency and durability. They are certainly not the cheapest but long term value equation I think will be better. They are still operating at 100 percent 4 years later so far so good. I do think that Tesla now has a great product though and most likely less expensive. Best battery storage for sure and the roof tiles are a game changer once they are able to scale and install efficiently! Thank you! Carpe Diem!
Hey man, awesome production value and a fantastic concept. I want to build a solar panel covered carport myself. But maybe tone down the exuberance a little bit because this video seems like some sort of stealthy commercial lol. Anyway just my 2 cents. You do you etc ;)
i dont understand how the solar panels could power ur whole house....my dad has like an apartment (50 rooms) and he uses solar panels to heat water but still needs electricity...mind you we're at jakarta which is very hot....are our solar panels different??
Well we insulated, installed storm windows, insulated again, replaced all lights with LED's and installed a new high efficiency air conditioner. We are at about 90%. It also powers about 70% of our electric car. We used the most electricity in the summer when it is hot and that's when we produce the most energy. The panels are the most efficient panels on the market as well so that helps a lot. Still working great for us 4 years after the install. A good rain last night gave them a nice bath.
Thanks for your opinion. We believe everyone can have a homestead even with smaller yards. One half acre in LA is growing over 35,000 lbs of food a year off grid. Your imagination is the only limit in permaculture. Carpe Diem!
@@earthrepairian333 did you buy your property? If yes then it’s not a homestead, that’s not an opinion it’s a fact. Growing stuff on your property doesn’t make it a homestead…if anything it would be considered a micro-farm or a large garden

Good to know. We have seen hundreds of installers walk on these SunPower panels, on the edges, with no degradation apparent but good to know.
Time will tell but so far no damage seen or even the slightest reduction in output. About 4.5 years old now.

Your metal roof isn't serving its purpose.
