I've always like it over there (Ironically enough, I moved back home in 2014, and back down to LA last year...but now I live in the Harlems) but I always felt safe, dudes over there never really tripped on me, especially when I started being seen around, and they knew what I was about (a working man, mind my own business, move with respect etc...) But it's like, I was good around 7th and Vernon, where I lived, watched little dudes grow up...but still get banged on on western haha... it was a whole different group over there. I was eventually good over there too. Shit def still happens, even recently... I'm not a dummy haha...but in general, still one of the better spots to be as a civilian. Also, I have two sons...17 and 12 years old... and felt safe for them too. At least until the thing with the 60s jumped off a while back. Then I kinda worried about some mistaken identity or some old random shit...but in general, definitely one of the better "black" neighborhoods to live in. From 1980-1982 I lived on 45th & Western. I lived above a horrible, roudy tavern and Sir Georges, and across the street from the Post Office 90062. I went to Normandie Ave. Elementary. I remember Tojo. I was just 11/ 12 years old but I remember his reputation. We left L.A. in July 1982, back to Chicago. I don't think I would've made it to adulthood had we stayed in L.A. I wasn't aspiring to the gang/street life, but it didn't seem to matter, shit could find you. I was of the age where I had to choose a junior high.
