I've always loved the 44. Back in the early 90's I bought a Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special for Concealed Carry when I was Stationed out in Seattle. I still occasionally carry it.

The 44 magnum loaded correctly has been used by Larry Kelly of Mag-Na-Port fame for every big game animal up to elephant. In fact he once dropped an elephant reaching out to grab him with his trunk with a five inch Ruger Super Blackhawk revolver using a KTW bronze solid bullet with lead inserted in base for added weight. Dropped the massive animal with a frontal brain shot.

44 S&W American was the healed externally lubed 44 round, that evolved into the 44 S&W Russian which is the internally lubed 0.429" diameter bullet of today. The 44 Special being the Smokeless Powder version of the 44 Russian, ballistically near identical. The 44 Mag being the high pressure version of the 44 Special that helped pave the way for Handgun Hunting in the modern era.
