Saying the Abolitionist caused the Civil War is like saying a domestic violence survivor caused her husband to physically assault her. Having a strong opinion is not the cause for violence.

When will the other presentations be posted from this conference?

+Leonardo's Truth Burns also downplays the war crimes at The Crater, Confederate soldiers killing USCTs who surrendered. Or the free blacks caught in PA before the battle of Gettysburg. CSA troops sent those people back to the Confederate States to be sold in slavery. As for Gen. McClellan, it's not that he's a villain. He just didn't trust/believe in the chain of command. He wanted to set war policy. That was Lincoln's job.

+Leonardo's Truth Why do you fail to recognize the humanity of Lincoln, Sheridan, Grant, and Sherman? You seem more than willing to point to their flaws, but want to highlight the humanity of slaveholders. Why the difference? As for the Union Army, it has been noted by smarter people than me that it ended slavery and was the killing machine in the conquest of the West. Check out Empire of the Summer Moon. Peace

+Leonardo's Truth Never called General McClellan a villain. That type of language never works well when looking at the past.

@Leonardo's Truth OH stop! How long do you think it took Burns and those that worked with him to make that 9 hr documentary ~ !

@@JPW3 Listen to the lectures of Blight on Yale open courses, he says he has issues with the documentary. Having said that, I think Gen. McClellan was not just a racist pro slavery jerks, he was also committing Treason.

I enjoyed his lecture. Unfortunately, Mr. Blight felt the need to bring current politics into it as a joke. An insulting joke towards people with a different political perspective than his own. I don't watch these videos to be preached at by someone no more qualified to comment on today's politics than I am. I hope Mr. Blight, in the future, will stick to what he does so well - write and talk about history.

You have a False idea that history and the present are not related.

@@bbegins10 Of course they are related. However, Mr. Blight is no more qualified to comment on today's politics than anyone else. But he IS qualified to talk about the civil war. Any good historian will tell you it takes about 100 years to get a good historical perspective. If I want to hear someone comment on current events, there is no shortage of blowhards wasting my time. I look to people such as Mr. Blight to change the subject. Besides, why anger a large portion of his audience? What's his goal? He's not going to 'educate' anyone with sarcastic and insulting political jokes.

@@swdierks it’s precisely his knowledge of history that gives him insight into the way it rhymes in the present. Doubtless you don’t like that it leads him to progressive conclusions, but if history leads to that you should take the lesson rather than refusing to self examine.

@@bbegins10 It's not that I agree or disagree. I don't agree that an expert on the civil war has ANY better insights than anyone else on modern life. All this is besides the point. Almost NO one would go to a lecture by him if he advertised it as a political speech, for good reason. He knows this, as you should.

@@swdierks Of course he's got a better insight on the current world than the average person. He has a deeper knowledge base. It's simply hubris for you to think otherwise. Also, he's a fucking doctor, you twit.
