I've done a lot of research on plant based medicines in North America. The natives actually used over 300 different plants as medicines, depending on where they lived. Some of those are still usable in modern medicine. Seems some of those medicine men knew their stuff.
I have studied this part of history for many years. One of the best books I have found on the subject is "Overland in 1846" 2 volumes edited by Dale Morgan. It contains diaries and letters from people who actually traveled on the trail that year.

Some collectors say: the original film is longer and was shortened to be more commercially accepted. Others say that the comic book writers invented a second part. It will be?
