    Hi,
And thanks for this upload. I have always wondered what the actual plough would look like doing this operation as I went to a show when I was nine but we were too far away from the plough head so never saw much especially as I am a real ’short arse.’ Thanks once again

The true romance of farming what a joy to see and listen to, love it.

Because the steam engines required incredible amounts of fuel (coal/wood) and water it could be reasoned that you would want the engines on the headlands where they could be tended instead of pulling the plow like today.
This is my best guess as to why this was engineered like this.

The main reasons for cable ploughing are firstly to avoid compaction of the soil by the heavy engines, and ,due to the british climate, to avoid getting bogged down in wet , muddy fields.

Great video, now all it takes is one man (or woman) and one tractor. But is it better?. maybe not.

2 steam engines could be pulling 2 6 furrow plows

I thought the same thing, then I considered the amount of compaction of the soil that two of these massive steam engines would cause as compared to this much lighter machine. I guess that was the main advantage. I'm a 73 year old American and I have never seen anything like this cable pulled double ended plow before. Amazing!

There is no compaction as the two engines operate from the ends of the field being plowed.

@@chorton38305 hi craig i saw a demonstration some 20 years ago one large fowler engine pulling a scammel tractor unit (british army tank transporter ) which was chained to a smaller traction engine .they started in reverse to pull out the cable on the fowler the next thing both are being dragged accross the field . I hope this makes sense, have a look on you tub great dorset steam fair.

No belt pulley on the engines. Only for plowing. Seems a waste.

the flywheel is the belt pulley
