This is not the first time MS does this confusing naming. At one time there was 3 different pieces of software named Explorer, yes, the Windows Explorer (the Windows file manager), the Internet Explorer (the web browser) and Front Page Explorer (the file manager inside Front Page web making application), why? Only MS knows.
I have Microsoft 365 which includes Office Outlook (which I like) but that looks as though it is being migrated to a new "Outlook" which the Windows Outlook is also being migrated to. My Office Outlook has option to "try the new Outlook". Excellent explanation which I will refer my friends to when they ask about "Outlook".

I didn't realize Microsoft had an email program (the one I am using) that wasn't Outlook. I have seen that message about Outlook replacing mail and calendar and was confused by it but just ignored it. Glad I caught your video!
Agreed, Leo!! MS is such a big company with much to offer and yet when you Google an issue with "Outlook," most of the time you get references to Office 365. I own Office 2019. MS goes out of their way to avoid helping me because I don't contribute to their Office 365 revenue stream. I'm dirt under their fingernails and God forbid they support me. It's if they are saying, "Look loser, you bought a one time offering of our program. You don't pay a monthly fee, so drop dead." Typical MS!
I bought various versions of MS Office over the year, but absolutely refuse to use the subscription model. For personal use I've switched entirely to alternatives (LibreOffice for office tools, and emClient for email)
What about Teams and Teams - the home one and the business one? Slightly different icons. And Microsoft account - Microsoft personal account, or Microsoft 365 business account.

When I searched on the Win 11 machine for Outlook, I saw the same thing you showed, and I GAVE UP. But you have greatly clarified things. Interesting that you list pop3 and imap4 as possible email protocols for office outlook (for which both office outlook is far from being ideal) but not the protocol it was made for: exchange and its eas protocol :-) Anyways, the first one is usually called Office Outlook as you stated, that makes it clear then. It was deinitely less confusing when the free windows client was called Outlook Express, i agree :)
I use a MacBook for work, and we use enterprise exchange accounts for out email. The Outlook program for MacOS used to be the Mac port of office outlook, but Microsoft has really been pushing for some time for people to use the new version of outlook, which you referred to as Windows Outlook. As far as I know it is not possible to run both at the same time, but it is possible to switch between them, by clicking an item on the File menu, to enable or disable “New Outlook”. The new outlook is missing several features that are available in the old outlook, most importantly to me the ability to automate tasks with AppleScript.

Classic Sheel to the rescue, after installing the OS it's the first thing I do even before Internet and antivirus. Works great on anything up to Windows 10 (haven't tried Open Sheel recently but was too buggy when it came out)? Windows 10 is only to use some programmes that are already locked out of WIndows 8.1. 8.1 is to keep the machines going longer as it's already "broken" compared to 7 and XP, 10 irritates me enormously but 11 can't do it, had to try and work on someone else's 11 and just wanted to chuck it out the window

I've seen Outlook change since the days when Outlook Express was killed and I like its features. Even it's quirks are understandable but I tried the demo of the new Outlook and was completely confused. Why deliberately confuse your clients (users)? Is Microsoft in business for their programmers or their customers? Is there progress? The answer is clearly "there is change".
I'm not looking forward to the Mail for windows being replaced as I have to use Office 365 outlook for work. It will be confusing to use Windows Outlook for my personal emails with my gmail account. Leo, I want to use the new Outlook, it look promising. I am also worried that Microsoft at some time in future will discontinue with the Classic Outlook. With Classic Outlook I have a lot of pst files. I would like to keep them by adding Online Archiving to the Outlook drop down menu. I have Microsoft 365 Family account. I try to get into web accounts portal to set this up but it will not let me access since I do not have work or school account. I somehow have to setup admin privileges to be able to set up this online archiving. Can you advise how to do? Or do I just have to wait until Microsoft add this feature for all.

I didn't know lmao was a protocol. If you mean IMAP, you can't "change". It's a choice you make at account setup time, so you'd have to set up a new connection to the account using IMAP, and then disconnect the POP.
Microsoft uses the same method as the following anecdote. Person A wants to know what Person B's PIN code is. The latter is generous and says: 3333, and adds: "But I won't reveal the order." Person A thinks Person B is an imbecile, but he is mistaken. Because, Person B uses different fonts for the number 3.

The new Outlook that Microsoft has released for Windows 11 is meant to replace the Windows Mail & Calendar apps that came with Windows 11. It is lighter than the Outlook that comes with Microsoft 365. It is not replacing Outlook 365

Hey Leo, i beg to disagree with you. All the 3 are perfectly distinguishable. 1. Mail for windows is free and comes installed. It only happens to have a toogle that allows you to try out some outlook features. 2ndly MS outlook is paid for application with full features lastly OWA is web application which u access through the browser.
Oh, they are quite different, as I outline... and yet when someone asks a question about "Outlook", I still don't know which one they're talking about - it could mean any of them.
The Office version of Outlook is being replaced and when the transition is complete, Microsoft EXCHANGE will be discontinued. Just another way for Microsoft to avoid paying for resources. The "New" version's calendar is HORRIBLE. Try printing a Landscape version of a single month (suitable for hanging on your office wall or cabinet).

There's also a website version of outlook which can access your corporate email if your employer has that integration set up.

Since MS is moving to being a tablet OS instead of a real computer OS, it has become neither and just makes things so much more difficult for everyone
They already make that mistake with Windows 8 (making it touch-screen/tablet focused rather than for desktop PC (got rid of start menu etc).

Browsers are fine. They're talking about programs like Thunderbird, Microsoft Office Outlook, and so on.

Evolution is the Outlook killer available in Linux. Linux if for intelligent people who've had enough of Windoze.
It's not that confusing - multiple versions of Outlook will be replaced by a unified version - and the replacement will always involve legacy and beta/new.

Hey Leo, i beg to disagree with you. All the 3 are perfectly distinguishable. 1. Mail for windows is free and comes installed. It only happens to have a toogle that allows you to try out some outlook features. 2ndly MS outlook is paid for application with full features lastly OWA is web application which u access through the browser.
Oh, they are quite different, as I outline... and yet when someone asks a question about "Outlook", I still don't know which one they're talking about - it could mean any of them.

Outlook is slowly getting worse
The Office version of Outlook is being replaced and when the transition is complete, Microsoft EXCHANGE will be discontinued. Just another way for Microsoft to avoid paying for resources. The "New" version's calendar is HORRIBLE. Try printing a Landscape version of a single month (suitable for hanging on your office wall or cabinet).

You neglected to mention Outlook's ability to utilize Microsoft Exchange server. In my opinion is the best mail method.
