Most Scenic River in Illinois? So Many Smallmouth

- This will go down as one of my most memorable days fishing. On a small creek/river in Illinois, I got into a ton of smallmouth bass. Plenty of dinks but a few really nice fish as well. These fish put up such a strong fight on the tenkara rod! Most importantly, this place was just stunningly beautiful, with lush forests, tall limestone cliffs, and not another soul in sight. Man, I love fishing and the places it brings me.

Thanks for watching Most Scenic River in Illinois? So Many Smallmouth
I used to fish for them on Kauai in the upper streams, sometimes we'd catch two at once on the same rooster tail. I don't think many of them ever saw a lure before.
That's my favorite kind of fishing! Sounds awesome.
You can get plus 4lbs'ers in chicago on the lake front. Not quite as placid as where you are -lol :) Kankakee River, pretty good for smallies too
Haha yeah for sure! I've watched lots of videos of Jon B and Peric fishing that waterfront ... looks fun, but in a different way!
What is this place? I dream of visiting here
Illinois! It really is magical :)
I had no idea about Tenkara fishing until watching this video…another hobby coming up:)
Heck yeah!! Wait till you feel a decent fish on the end of a fixed line rod ... it's a serious rush!
Killer video dude
Thank you my man.
Great video IL has some great small mouth fishing
It definitely does! Would like to explore more of it's waters, but every time I visit I keep coming back here. My next goal is to find some smaller water with much bigger average size.
What is the name of this river / place?
Sorry Gary, I don't give out specifics. Thank you for watching though!
no problem. I was just trying to find new fishing spots in the area. Thanks for the video! cool place. @@FlickyFlies
looks like white pines state park
It does, actually!
What flies did you use? Line setup?
Flies are mentioned in the video! Went between a clouser minnow and a little jigged streamer. Line was about 10 feet of fluorocarbon line with 3 or so feet of bright indicator line. The stuff euronymphers use. Orvis Indicator I believe it was.
Love it I live 5 miles from there grew up my hole life doing the exact thing
Oh man so lucky! I love that area so much.
Bass on a fly rod is amazing. I’ve had a great time with a bugger - they def go for the reaction bite.
Wish there were some more bass opportunities here in CO! BUT, I'm going back to this area next week and will be filming another video here, along with a couple others for trout in the driftless. Can't freaking wait!
Where at in Illinois
Sorry Jason, I don't give out specific locations.
whats the name if the creek
I don't give out specifics for video locations, sorry!
There is an abundance of lakes, streams, ponds , rivers and lagoons all over Illinois! Many of them are running through forest preserves and state parks! Its not just Chicago its all over the state. Google is your friend.😊
It really is an underrated state in my opinion! I only visit relatives about once a year, but the few places I've fished have been a ton of fun and a nice change of pace from my waters in Colorado.
Where is this at looks nice
Thanks man! I don't like to give out locations here on the channel, but appreciate you watching.
It’s in white pine state park?
Nope but I'll have to check that place out!
@@FlickyFliessmart fuck you can take the place I mentioned but can’t say a spot what a clown
Hi, can you tell me where in Illinois this is? I would really appreciate it. Great video.
Thanks so much for watching, I'm sorry, I don't really give out specifics for locations in my videos.
apple canyon state park
Wow a Rainbow in Illinois, must be the Driftless Region . I thought maybe the DuPage river at first .
I do love fishing the DuPage!
Illinois is a huge state with many rivers and streams
True!
People forget that Illinois is FAR FAR more than just Chicago.
Awesome video!! I'm going camping there next month. Really hoping to get a nice trout while I'm there
Nice! Lucky! I might get back there in June - fingers crossed. I think the trout are probably pretty hard to come by from what I've heard, but I wish you luck, and there's always tons of willing smallmouth if the trout fail you!
@@FlickyFlies Yeah Im mainly going for the smallmouth. Most of the videos I've seen of this river they get 1 or no rainbows, so I'm not expecting much
@@EngineeringHooksets It seems from my very limited experience that finding the deepest holes where holdovers might stick around is the best bet! Do you ever get up to the driftless in Wisconsin? Hoping to take a trip there this summer and plan to catch lots of trout, of course!
@@FlickyFlies Post-trip update: We only fished for about 2 hours because of thunderstorms, but I got 3 nice rainbows! All on a 1 5/8 inch rebel raider twitchbait. I tried my fly rod for a while but I was terrible at it. And no, I've never been to the driftless region.
@@EngineeringHooksets im headed to camp their in 2 weeks. My big question did you fish the river in the state park or where is this exclusive parking lot located out of the state park?! Thanks !
Super nice fish area .👍
Thank you!! It really is.
Where's your reel bro
ohhh snap! Asking the tough questions.
That was a great day and I can understand why you will always remember that day. Really idyllic and it’s always better when it’s a little unexpected.
Yes sir! I reminisce about this day all the time. I'll be going back within the next few weeks - hope it fishes as well as it did on this day. Thanks for watching!
I would appreciate if near the beginning you told us what rod you were using. Knowing the fly is good but better if we know the characteristics of the rod. Thanks
Agreed! Thanks for the comment.
@@FlickyFlies you use a good number of shots from the point of view of a companion. These are great to see the context and watch the rod. I think I made out in this video the rod was a Tenbum but couldn’t tell which length.
@@terryasselstine6879 You're correct, it's the Suntech Tenkarabum 36.
Well done! Had a day in South Central, PA just like that. No one around - the browns, brookies and rainbows were hungry. I just caught my first PA trout on a 12' Wild Water Rod. It was the best day an old man could get. First time on Tenkara as well and I will be doing that again. It was tough fishing, though with lots of cover. Thank you for your videos!
These are the days we fish for my friend!! Glad you got into a fish on the tenkara rod. It's really addicting. Thanks for watching!
10:09 😂 AND THAT RAINBOW TROUT! Wow! 😍
Lol felt pretty good calling it like that 😬
Looks like a fun day of fishing. That is a beautiful stretch of water.
One of my most memorable days this year! Thanks for watching.
I hooked a 3lb cat with my Tenkara rod, its a challenge to get them in.
Isn’t that the truth!
I just bought my first Tenkara rod. What is your setup? What river is this?
Nice dude! In this particular video I’m using a Tenkarabum 36. It’s got a bit more backbone than some of the other Japanese rods, but not as firm as many of the American companies rods. This can vary of course! What did you end up picking up?
Great spot! Wish I had your cinematography skills.
Thanks Gary! Appreciate you checking out my video. It was such a beautiful spot. The cinematography is a curse, takes me all day to film the different bits and pieces that go into a video, but I do have fun!
Nice place, nice fishes. Thx for the video !
Thank you for watching! Really glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely love the effort to include the. beautiful landscape where you fish. Thanks for the effort that requires. ......its magnificent videography.
So glad you appreciate the beauty I was able to show! Thanks so much for watching.
Try minimights pink chartruese fire orange tiny jigheads & tails
would love to know your setup. rod length, line type and length, tippet etc. thanks.
Hey Arthur! I've got several rods for different purposes but in this video I'm using the Suntech Tenkarabum 36 rod, which is just shy of 12 feet long. It's a pretty fast action rod with quite a delicate tip and just enough backbone to chuck out something w/ a tungsten bead. Line type was #4.5 level line. About 11 feet of the level line, followed by a foot of Orvis Tactical Sighter which is alternating colors of orange, green, and white ... that's used as an indicator when tight-line nymphing w/ just the tippet in the water. Tippet was 2-3 feet of 5x fluorocarbon. Hope that helps!
@@FlickyFlies that helps indeed! i’ve been using the Tenkara Rod Co rocky with 20 feet of line. Might honestly be overkill (the rod is a tank and I’m sure it could handle a slab). best of luck out there!
@@mvsc-k5e Awesome! I like having different rods for different types of fishing. The rod in this video is my general all-around rod, can land fish up to ~20inches or so but w/ an epic battle that's really unnerving and fun haha. I just got a tiny brookie rod last week and it's a blast w/ small fish, and I also have a big 2 handed rod that can handle small carp and big trout/whatever else. I bet you could land just about any trout you encountered with the Rocky!
Great fun with the creek Smallies!
It was a perfect day my friend! I'm addicted to them. Can't wait to get out for smallies again in the future.
Beautiful!
It really was. Thanks for watching!
Where man in Illinois ? 😢
Sorry! Don't really give away spots. Thanks for watching though!
Maybe I missed it. What rod are you using?
No worries! It's a Suntech Tenkarabum 36.
What river
Sorry, I don’t give out specifics!
U know what is ok to fish but keep the place clean bring ur garbage when u leave. I go many place to fish but people always left there garbage everywhere. This place is beautiful !
For sure! I never leave garbage :)
So cool!! Awesome video Chris!! Tell the rest of the family I say hi!
For sure!! Glad you liked the video, thanks for dropping by!
i live in northern illinois and wish I knew where this was. im guessing out in the drfitless cuz nothing looks like this by me
Getting close! Definitely more limestone cliff type areas up that way. Also down in the southern part of the state.
@@FlickyFlies yeah I've seen sections of the rock river that looks like this. I always head north to Wisconsin whenever I can. Definitely need to check out more of Illinois
@@chunkylover54 Ah yeah, I didn't actually get to fish the Rock. Is it pretty wadeable in parts? Wisconsin seems like it has a ton of good smallmouth rivers in the driftless as well as trout, of course. I think I'll try to get up there at some point this year.
@@FlickyFlies not really sure. I mostly ride bikes and float on rivers. just started getting into tenkara and am starting to get addicted. Its great to be able to incorporate fishing into my other hobbies. thats why i got excited to see a river like this in illinois not used to seeing stuff like this around me. I usually drive north for this kind of fun.
Heading to the Rockford/chicago area…any suggestions?
I've had a ton of fun fishing for lots of different species in the DuPage river in the Chicago suburbs. Pick any park or natural area and access it there! Carp, Largemouth, Smallmouth, Sunfish. Good times!
Enjoying your videos. Glad I saw you mentioned by Tristen. Is that a Suntech rod? Which one? Thanks
Awesome! Glad he dropped my name too! It's a Suntech Tenkarabum 36. My first tenkara rod and still probably my favorite all-arounder.
@@FlickyFlies I see it is now discontinued :-(
Wow never would have guessed Illinois! Nice variety of fish you got there as well 👏
Yeah man Illinois was really great!
Where is this pls say
@@Jason-fl2wd my guess it’s Illinois River by Starved Rock
Kankakee rock creek
@@blicky308 this is not rock creek 🤦♂️
Where exactly is this and was it easy to access?
I'm sorry Michael, I don't generally name spots unless it's a massive, popular river.
Def not subscribing to that kinda bs lol
apple canyon state park
Hey brotha man, love the video and that’s a great lookin spot! Any way I can get the general area of where this was at? Im interested in going out that way I’m assuming it’s near the palisades? 🤔 idk just a guess tho! Please let me know, happy new year
It's not really in that area :) BUT, I have family near there and the rivers in the suburbs can be a ton of fun for smallmouth, panfish, etc! Living in Colorado, I love fishing those waters when I visit!
I know this spot as well :) My kids are always guaranteed smallies here! Thanks for sharing!!
Heck yeah!! It would be a perfect place to fish with kids, so many fish that are down to bite. I wish I could have brought my son! Thanks for watching the video and not just writing the name of the location in your comment randomly :)

Stellar video. Those days when fishing Tenkara makes you laugh are a gift.

Great Job, Man. Amazing scenario and beautiful catches.
Hugs from Brazil
Thanks so much Carlos! Bet you fish some beautiful places where you live too :)
what river is this?
I'm sorry Ian, I don't give out specifics. Appreciate you watching though!
Was this a forest preserve? Or private land?
This is public land!
I live in northern illinois and do a fair amount of smallmouth fishing. Don’t do well on a fly rod but a Wooly bugger is my go to. Not familiar with that river you fished but it looked fantastic. Nice job.
Hard to beat a wooly bugger my friend! Thanks for watching.
It isn’t uncommon for fish over 4 pounds to be in those little illinois creeks
I wouldn't mind finding some of those!! I fished another Illinois creek and found an ~18-20'' northern pike, but he wasn't that heavy.
@@FlickyFlies gotta go more south towards the illinois river
Awesome video! An great looking fish! Keep up the good, can’t wait to see more! I also subscribed!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that! I really enjoyed making this one, probably my favorite yet. Smallmouth are the best!
The videos make it look like you're out there all alone. Did you see many other anglers?
Typically I'd film a video in a way that doesn't show other people, but on this day I saw ZERO other fishermen! It was amazing!
Fishing for smallmouth on Tenkara gear has been my primary diversion from late May through September the last several years. I mostly fish SW Wisconsin. I drive by great trout streams to fish for smallmouth.
Can't blame you! I had so much fun fishing for these smallies, and they put up such a great fight on tenkara. I'm actually planning a trip to fish that area for both trout and smallies at some point this year. Does the smallmouth fishing slow down a lot after September?
I live in lake county Illinois any recommendations for chasing small mouth. i mostly fish up by my parents in northern Wisconsin and got hooked on chasing bass in rivers. so much fun. looking for something closer to enjoy.
@@chunkylover54 what lakes, streams or rivers do you fish in WI? What river is he fishing in this video
Y on earth didn’t you keep any of the big fish 🐟 u got I don’t get it!! Keep to eat!!
Hah! Just fishing for fun. Didn’t have cooler either, and was hours away from home.
Is this the famous John B smallmouth spot ?
It is!
Thanks alot man !

@blicky308 Thanks homie, I'm from Chicago an i go to the kankakee river every chance I get, my best river.
@blicky308 Man bro where's a good crappie spot on the kee?
@@midwesthoods9727 sorry brother can't help you with that lol all I fish for is bass and I really don't go fish elsewhere outside of my little hood spot, it's got tons of bass in it and not many people fishing for em and less catching em . I'm from cook county , tight lines 🎣 and God bless 🙏
