The La Plata Maryland F4: Nightmare in the Northeast

- Today is April 30th, just a few days after the awful tornadoes in the Central U.S. that took several lives and dozens of livelihoods. While there's nothing I can say here to help alleviate the pain experienced by victims of the tornadoes, what I can do is encourage us to share or donate to resources that do help. If you want to support any boots on the ground efforts, I encourage you to check out Team Rubicon and their mission as a veteran-owned and operated entity. June First Severe Weather Research (friend of the channel) held a fundraiser over the weekend and raised over $1,000 for victims, which we were able to contribute to thanks to all of you.

Like this if you were part of ‘FinishedLaPlata’ lol
I know I was, got to see its prototype title 🤣
I actually liked the original title myself LOL. Regardless of the name, Carly, I enjoyed the video. Keep it up.
I'm glad I was part of the FinishedLaPlata gang.
That made our day though 🙂.
@@MakoSica it definitely made my day. Anything Carly posts make my day just a little bit better.
FinishedLaPlata
I think it’s cute when TH-camrs forget to change their file name to the title. It’s a fun Easter egg.
Relatable moment.
Hey at least it's finished
FinishedLaPlata
ehheheheheee
Side note: your cat’s little socks on its front paws are ADORABLE

Can't wait to watch more from my favorite weather TH-camr
Fun fact! A second F2 struck the same exact area within 5 minute of the F4...
Between 7:02 and 7:07 pm, both tornadoes crossed through the heart of La Plata. This isn't the first time this has happened too.
In 1994, the town was struck by two more tornadoes that only came 11 minutes apart. The first of them was rated F2, which is already quite uncommon for the area.
I've always been interested in this event. A F4 on this side of the US is already rare enough, but this one also stayed on the ground for 90 minutes and had a 78 mile path...
And to put the cherry on top of that, it was moving ~60 mph through downtown La Plata, with an incredibly fast average forward speed of 52 mph. This makes it one of the fastest violent tornadoes on record!
Thanks for making a video on this. Awesome work on the music and editing!
(p.s - If you're reading this, you should look at pictures of it crossing the Bay. It had a second tornado for most of its journey across it.)
In Bowling Green three years ago the EF3 tornado had a twin EF2 that struck much of the same area for a while, thankfully doing less damage
@@sojiiiiiiii Ohh wow, that's so unlucky...
@@sojiiiiiiiiI can't believe this December will make 3 years honestly.
The photo you showed of the damage in the video was really strange because the mail boxes were still there and the trees were basically untouched while the foundation of the house was bare.
DING DING DING!!!
Even the cardboard stapled/nailed to the mailbox was intact! How incredibly odd and frightening.
Additionally, if you're looking for more oddball tornadoes in the Mid-Atlantic region, look at the College Park September 2001 tornado. It happened a few days after 9/11 when the entire metro area was already spooked. That tornado came close enough to my home that I actually took shelter in my bathroom with my cat for my safety.
Just learned from Swegle Studios an interesting fact that involved Maryland tornados...
(as someone raised in the NE states, I was very surprised by how dangerous tornadoes in Maryland have often been)
Ben Frankin possibly became the 1st storm (tornado) chaser when he spotted and immediately began following a small twister / dust devil on horseback!
he called it a "land spout" bc he had just become fascinated w/ water spouts.
Ben was a badass. That man's mind never ever stopped working.
Yeah good stuff 👍
I just watched that video last night! He did a great job!
I lived in LaPlata when this happened and saw it coming towards the townhome I lived in then it made a turn and went down the main road of LaPlata. I worked at Allstate at the time and our office was on a 2nd floor of a building beside Casey jones and I walked there and the office was gone. There were no sirens at the time just TV warnings. They now have sirens. Our office made a temporary office in a parking lot to help our customers and collected donations for our little town. 12 years later it is the 2nd scariest time in my life (1st was cancer diagnosis). I now live in WV where we had an unusual batch of tornados and my home was in the F1 zone. I can live without another one!
I'm in WV and recall a particular storm outbreak last summer... I was in NoVa in 2002 and remember when this happened.
I didn't know any towns here in MD had tornado sirens... Then again if any town had one I would have guessed it'd be La Plata lol... Seems to be a magnet in a fairly inactive tornado state. Glad you're okay though! I lived near Waldorf at the time, and was playing outside with friends. We saw the sky and immediately went home. I'll never forget how the sky looked that day. It looked so angry! You know it's bad when a bunch of 13 year olds take one look up at it, and peace out.
Hi I live in Arnold md and I'm a massive tornado fan loved them since I was 6 I'm 15 now ! I'm to young to remember la Plata I was born just after it but I'm doing a few reports on tornadoes and I'm wondering if I can interview you or ask a few questions?
Rip to the victims of this tornado and the victims of the tornados from the 27th outbreak
Your cat is gorgeous!
This tornado struck La Plata, my hometown, on my 3rd birthday. I went to Milton Sommers Middle School, walking past that memorial plague inside the lobby every weekday for 3 years. Stories of the 1926 tornado were told to me when I was young, and I've researched it myself a few times. My grandparents lived 15-20 minutes north of La Plata, and they have told me the story of the 02 tornado multiple times. To this day, I still have trouble believing my hometown was destroyed like this, and I am often surprised by how little this tornado is actually talked about. Thank you so much for covering this so thoroughly.
Firstly, thank you for getting the town names right. Huge props! This was an iconic event growing up in Maryland. At least for us 90’s kids.
I definitely looked up multiple videos for clarity. I’d hate to insult a group of locals 😂
@@carlyannawx Hahaha. It’s tough here. I sent Mitch West a list of towns and the pronunciation during hurricane season. I’m happy to help if you ever need the translations. Haha.
Carly, I’m forever grateful for you taking my suggestion into consideration! Thanks again for taking the time to listen!
I was 10 years old when this happened. I lived just across the Potomac River from La Plata in a little town named Dahlgren VA. I honestly remember this even happening because it was the 1st time I had ever seen it hail. My family was outside enjoying the warm weather, and we noticed the clouds moving in around us, but not directly over us. I remember hearing that there were storms coming, but a few hours away at that point. This was about 530-6p that evening. While we were outside it started to hail, progressively getting bigger in size and damaged our car window and shed roof. Once it was done hailing, my dad started freaking out because he had grown up in Dallas TX where tornados were common in his childhood. He rushed everyone inside and we prepared for it to hit us, by which time we didn't know it had missed us by 10miles or so. It was after hearing about La Plata that we realized how bad it could have been. We had friends who had lived in Charles County and we rushed over to check on them only to have our way blocked by debris and police blocking the highway. After a few hours we were able to reach our friends, to find that it had missed them, but still receiving damage from the hail. I am so glad this is finally coming to light how powerful this storm really was. Being a weather enthusiast (thank you Twister) even back then, it was shocking to see the destruction that was caused by it. It literally looked like the scene from the movie where they went to rescue Meg from her house.
@CarlyAnnaWX Thank you for doing a video on this! Definitely brought back some memories with this
This tornado is in my "big three" for what really showed the age and flaws of the Fujita Scale. It's important to tornado science history but it's impact is usually not often stated. (The damage photo shows a poorly anchored home slab, which was most likey pushed off the foundation and tumbled into the ravine, falling apart and creating the appearance of debris being scattered downwind. Contextuals don't agree with that, look at the intact trees and mailbox). Thanks for giving it your signature treatment, from a tornado science enthusiast in the northeast.
In the picture, house was completely swept away. High end EF 4 damage. Another great presentation, thanks. ❤
Completely swept away but the mailboxes were still intact and quite a few trees still standing, truly a peculiar twister.
Blaze is so adorable
FinishedLaPlata gang here, though I didn't watch until now! Interesting storm and always happy to see Mr. Blaze, plus the little bloopers/BTS at the end. :)
Carly, I'd love to see a video about tornadoes in Japan someday! Especially the 2006 Saroma F3 (one of the worst tornadoes in modern Japanese history) and the 2012 Tsukuba tornado (both of these had injuries and fatalities.) Japan gets more tornadoes than many people realize, and even some strong ones. But even if they make the news in Japan, we don't hear much about them in America.
I second this. I would love to learn about events like these in other countries
Japan has perfect weather for these when the cold air off mount Fuji collides with the warm tropic air of the pacific.
Wow I live not far from here and not many people know about this one or the College Park tornado. Thank you!!!
Was the college park tornado in 97/98/99?
@@Jbobloochjr3 Actually the College Park MD tornado occurred in 2001
@@dantheman9591wrong on all counts 😂
I remember a tornado in that area in that time period prior to college park.
We're y'all okay from both storms?
(C.P. and La Plata)
@@Jbobloochjr3 I wasn't living in the United States around 2001 and 2002. I was born and raised in Jamaica in 1998 and I was living in Jamaica between 2001 and 2002 around the time the infamous tornadoes occurred in the Mid Atlantic
Greetings young lady. You're the best. Old man advice...Stay simple. Staying simple on the outside keeps you peaceful on the inside. You're helping & fascinating many people. I love that cat and your classic cat-lady voice. Peace.
Bravo! Love your comment, and I, too love the beautiful Blaze. Peace❤
Awesome! I was actually living in Waldorf about 5-10 miles north at the time and participated in search and rescue ops for this storm.
As a La Plata boy born, raised, and still reside, this tornado has been categorized as both a F4 and EF5. I was a La Plata High sophmore at the time and remember seeing the raw devestation. There was a bank (Maryland Bank & Trust) right at the corner of 301 and Route 6 and the only thing left was the vault. Hell if youve been around long enough, you can still see the damage in the tree line down 6 towards Clarks Run where massive trees were literally snapped like twigs...22 years later. It was a monster storm. Was also the very day - April 28, 2002 - that the Maryland Terrapins won the NCAA basketball tournament. I was watching the game when the tornado warning flashed across the TV and remember running outside and seeing that the sky was an incredibly violent shade of green and that there wasnt a single noise to be heard i.e. not a bird chirping, a dog barking, a tree's branches swaying, or a car driving by...just simply unbelievable violent silence.
the radar imagery at the start showed just how close that thing came to hitting the house i was growing up in at the time, wild
As someone who lived through the college park ef3, thank you for shedding light on Maryland tornadoes! So many people here don’t think they happen.
im in maryland, but not in any areas that have tornadoes but i do occasionally like to look up stuff about maryland and tornadoes!
This tornado really jumpstarted my fascination with tornadoes and severe weather. Maryland is my home state so this event really stayed with me, even now
I live in Maryland about 90 minutes Northeast of La Plata and we were hanmered from lunch time on with thunderboomers.
Lots of warnings from what I can vaguely remember. I do remember very frequent lighting and close/loud thunder. It was like being a rock concert without the band: just pyro and lightning.
I remember Tom Tasselmyer WBAL, Tony Pann WBAL and Justin Berk WBAL (at the time) being on air helping and warning people through the storms.
I was born in the same town weeks after the Tornado. Been interested about it since
Topper Shutt, he’s always a great weather source.
Please pray for the peoples of Nebraska, Iowa and Oklahoma!!!
Living in Maryland I drove a truck route through that area, I can't believe it has been 20 years. I love how you pronounced La Plata. We just kinda run it all together. Also, this does show a lot about the government here. It's very reactive, not proactive. Great story. Well done.
Carly you do such a great job on these videos. I can watch them over and over. That includes the Plainfield IL tornado. I was 12 and lived there when it hit.
Literally cheered when I saw this pop up in my feed. Haven't even watched yet, but I've been hoping for a long time that someone would cover this tornado in-depth. I was a county away from this thing's path (St. Mary's), but I was in 6th grade at the time and it was the only thing people talked about the next day at school. It was beyond shocking to us. It was disturbing. Things like this don't happen here... or so we thought. This tornado was an absolute freak of nature in our neck of the woods. Southern MD sees maybe one EF-1 tornado every other year. So hyped for this. Thank you, Carly!
Living in Maryland currently. We had a tornado warning about 3 years ago. I was the only person in my family who took it seriously especially after researching this tornado.
Wow i only recently learned about the La Plata F4 because it happened when I was a baby, and I only lived there until i was about three but that's the town i was born in, kinda crazy to know where i was born had such a strong tornado.
This was the first tornado I ever chased I have photo of it still to this day upon my old high school
18:25 no matter the state, tornadoes always seem to find mobile home parks
As a Maryland resident and weather nerd, I remember this day. I never fathomed we would have a F4 tornado in Maryland. Furthermore I had no idea it was on the ground for as long as documented. Excellent video, thanks for covering it.
My grandparents lived near La Plata. This line of storms is what convinced them to move.
And as an interesting side note tornadoes in Maryland aren’t too uncommon. Ones that strong though? Those are rather rare.
Carly, I just love watching your presentations ❤❤❤ You are professional & quite intelligent, yet personal; you never leave out the human element contained in these events, which shows compassion & empathy. And your kitty cat helps me feel comfy, like I'm actually sitting at your home listening to you spin these incredible stories .Thank you so very much for helping me be happy. 🥰😘
Yes. I’d describe Carly as a lady with the brains that’s been blessed with the graces of Southern charm and a nack for great storytelling, and I love that about her content.
@@emrilbennett8704absolutely ✅💯👍
Its weird, I've lived in Maryland for 5yrs and didnt know La Plata existed. I grew up in La Plata county Colorado. We had a tornado in 2002 as well, but it was produced by the winds from the Missionary Ridge fire.
The idea of this tornado crossing part of Chesapeake bay is as terrifying as the images from that fire tornado.
I can't imagine what it takes to figure out what caused the damage to a building that is completely gone. Always love hearing about the survey scandals, though! Always a pleasure to see Mr. Blaze!
I remember when this happened. I wasn’t down there though. I’m in Baltimore and I just checked and read that we don’t have tornado sirens in most places in Maryland
I live in Delaware, a couple hours from this. We don't get many tornadoes but when we do they are ridiculous. Hey, maybe you could do a video about each state's worst tornadoes? That would be fun!
Have you thought about interviewing some of the people involved in the tornados that you're covering? In this case, there are probably local weather personnel, emergency management personnel and victims still around in Charles & Calvert counties.
It's definitely always a thought in my mind. It would take some logistical-figuring out to get that organized, and I always don't want to force someone (particularly victims) to relive that, but I'm sure there would be some willing folks. It's definitely a possibility in the future!
@@carlyannawxthank God for Zoom. It could definitely help you out and save gas.
My favorite TH-camr! Thank you for feeding my obsession.
I'd love to see you cover the 2012 Maryland Derecho :)
Thank you for supporting Team Rubicon. Thank you for all your hard work. And for your remembrance of the victims and the injured.
Yep, I live in the Northeast in CT, however I have skywarn training due to the increasing frequency of tornados here within the past few years. As soon as I saw the mailbox I realized it was prob a multi vortex tornado & damage done by the lumberyard getting lofted & tossed onto a structure that wasn’t built specifically to withstand that type of wind damage. A ton of people out here, even professionals I’ve talked to, don’t have the training to recognize tornadic damage patterns & some even scoff at the idea of tornados here.. it’s so frustrating. Thank you for covering more of these on the East coast & bringing awareness! ❤
16:46 what I found most remarkable in this photo was that the mailboxes appear undamaged.
The thing what confused me most about the picture that you showed was that not only was everything structural gone, but the trees seemed relatively unharmed, as did the mailboxes,
Yayy lets go
I lived in Port Tobacco and went to school in LaPlata many years before this tornado. It destroyed my elementary school. I was no longer in the area when the tornado struck. I have no idea how I got "here" but this is a good analysis of the tornado.
I lived 20 minutes north of La Plata in 2004. I watched the storm come across the Potomac River and hit La Plata. My best friend's father and his wife were supposed to meet a contractor at their new house that day, but were delayed because of the weather. They owned one of the newly built houses that got destroyed by the storm. To this day there are businesses in Waldorf, just north of La Plata, that still have plaques and certificates of thanks for their help in the aftermath of the storm. This tornado hasn't been covered well by the TH-cam WX community, so I'm so happy one of my favorite weather folks has now covered it.
The sky was gnarly that day. I left Laplata an hour before it hit.
I lived here way after this tornado but people still talk about it all the time! Thanks for covering this! I love when smaller tornadoes are getting recognized. Another one I think you should cover is the 2007 Enterprise EF4 Tornado in Enterprise, Alabama. I also lived there after the tornado struck but people were devastated from the aftermath and deaths. It’s heartbreaking especially when someone you know was close to at least one of the individuals :(
Carlyyyy ✨✨✨ Relatable Weather Queen with her seven available beverages 👏👏👏outstanding work, as always.
Thank you for your heartfelt and perfectly respectful tone when presenting these tragic events, you make them so interesting!
Yes, her peaceful deliveries just lovely to listen to
Love your videos! Watching from Worcester, UK! 🇬🇧
As a tornado youtube fan who moved to La Plata recently, I've been looking forward to this video! My wife lived about 10 minutes away at the time and has vivid memories of the hail, and I can confirm that the sirens still work to this day (we had a tornado warning late last summer).
Your intros are genuinely on a different level
Enjoy you videos. I saw the Alonsa EF4 tornado of Manitoba Canada in 2018 and it is a sight that still haunts me. You see one and I think you are changed by it.
Always a joy to see handsome Mr Blaze 😊 thanks for another wonderful video!
I'm from MD (probably 50 miles north of the storm's path) and I remember when this happened. I was 15 years old and obsessed with tornadoes and the movie Twister, so I was hyper aware of the event and the significance of it. Seeing a historical overview of something close to home is pretty surreal, enjoyed the video!
Also, you don't have to put so much emphasis on the "t" in La Plata. We all call it La PLAY-duh so it rolls off the tongue.
Figured you’d upload soon, since we just had a 100+ tornado outbreak last week. Glad I’m here for it!
I still can't believe your apart of the y'all squad. I follow his TH-cam weather and really only his weather. I live in northwest Ohio. You guys do an amazing job with data and research and donations. I mean I already loved your videos but after finding out your apart of the y'all squad. It's an honor to watch your videos now your group is simply amazing everything you guys do with giving back man it's amazing. Ty for everything you guys do
Yay, a new Carly Anna video! Thank you for sharing these videos.
At the age of 16 and a recent transplant from sunny California to Stillwater OK. One day in June 1975 I was mesmerized to see what I later learned was a shelf cloud, the entire expanse above me seemed to roll over where I stood. Not long later, lemon sized hail began to fall, then I watched in unbelief as an F3 drop from the sky. 49 years later, now living in Slidell La, and an avid adverse weather guy! My wife and I were enjoying a thunderstorm from our sun deck. Well, the weather went oddly quiet like it did back just before I saw that shelf cloud. Pulling up the velocity image on my RadarScope app, I was a monkey’s uncle if there wasn’t a small debris ball just down the street. A minute later a rain rapped F2 went through or back yard. Carly, both my wife and I enjoy your enthusiasm and content. Keep it up.
I remember this day so well! Grew up in the DMV.
Excellent video!! I remember this occurring just months after moving to Maryland ( it did not rain that day in Laurel, MD but the sky looked evil to the south ). There are many more famous tornados that crossed bodies of water, a few being the Lorain, Ohio tornado of 1924, the Michigan-Windsor, Ontario F4 or F5 tornado of June 1946, the Michigan to McGregor F4 tornado of May 1956, the Port Huron-Sarnia, Ontario tornado ( reached a peak 1 mile wide in farmland northeast of Sarnia ) of May 1953 and the strangest one, the F3 or 4 massive wedge tornado that touched down on Lake Huron during August 2011 when the lake was at near record high water temp, this tornado then destroyed much of downtown Goderich, Ontario potentially causing large loss of life rather than one, except it was on a Sunday evening when the downtown was mostly vacant, the tornado then went up the Maitland River twisting up trees then luckily finally lifting before reaching Stratford, Ontario. This would be among the most economically destructive tornados in Canada during the current century. Interestingly, multiple tornados struck Pelee Island ( an island in the middle of Lake Erie ) during the 1930s.. Some other tornado outbreaks where none actually travelled over water but where tornado development was aided by lake convergence fronts include the Barrie, Ontario outbreak of May 1985 ( same day as the Ohio-PA outbreak ) and the August 1979 southern Ontario super outbreak
My partner doesn't believe me that tornadoes can and do happen in Georgia. I've grown up here my whole life and was told over and over again by the elderly in my community about the 1936 twin merged F4 tornado.
I would love it if you could do a video on that event- I know it will probably be a heavy one though, as over 200 people passed away. But it's absolutely full of awesome history and interesting meteorology. It's the same outbreak that spared Elvis! I think its referred to in the community as the: "1936 Tupelo-Gainesville tornado outbreak." But I could be wrong, I'm newer to all of this.
Anyway, I absolutely love watching your videos and how much respect you bring to not only these horrifyingly beautiful storms, but the lives affected and lost by them. Please keep up the good work Carly! And give Blaze a pat on his cute head for me! 😊
EF-1 tornado formed on St Simons Island near Brunswick Ga around August/September of last year.
I will never forget this day. We were living in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia at the time, coming home from taking our children to their piano recital. As we were driving home, we saw a supercell (not the LaPlata warned storm.) Having lived in the Washington, DC metro area all my life, and having never seen a supercell here before, I knew this day was going to be different. The scenes from LaPlata were horrifying. I think many believed that this area was immune to violent tornadoes. Sadly, this tornado proved them wrong. One thing I can say about severe weather forecasting now in my area (I currently live in the northern Shenandoah Valley of VA) is if there is a warned storm or tornado out here in the Valley, the NWS, IMHO, is very quick to warn counties further east of the impending threat. Is this a result of LaPlata? Not really sure, but I do feel they do an excellent job here in making people aware of what’s coming. Also, I loved your photos of the Valley. It really is that beautiful here. Thanks for doing such a fabulous job on LaPlata!❤️
Thank you so much for making this video. I don’t live near La Plata, but as a Maryland resident that has recently grown to be fascinated by weather, I really appreciate this video. Rarely do we experience tornadoes, (funny saying that given the tornado watch last week), but videos like this help people feel more informed and safer when they do happen. Finally being able to find a video on this infamous tornado was awesome.
I absolutely love the way you cover the stories from the very beginning, through the storm and the aftermath! Keep it up!!! Also, cheese is my go to snack! LOL!
The 2002 LPT can be felt as far north I remember that storm when I saw it on WJZ-TV 13 (CBS). That warning came once spotters saw it, and you said it yourself. But ⚾️ size hail?! Wow! That can do a whole lot of damage.
Thank you for covering this. I live in Salisbury Maryland and remember when it hit La Plata.
As always a great video! Thank you for making it🦋
Ooh new video. I gotta say, i really enjoy your content! Keep up the good work!
Thank you 🙏 for this I've been waiting for more content on this one. Ready to tune in now. Amazing work you do
I had lived in waldorf at that time. Was only 4, but I remember being outside and trying to get a bird before my mother came running saying there was a tornado while sirens went off. For some reason we went back out to close the blinds and a bolt of lightning stuck the ground a few inches from the window I was at. Vividly remember seeing a vehicle on top of the la plata safeway. I'm shocked it didn't come our way as tornado paths are random.
I'm so happy that you posted another video. Great job, Carly! Your content makes my day, especially when I'm having a bad one. :)
Im 20 so i was 2 years shy of this storm but being from and living in MD i never knew there was such a strong tornado here. We've had smaller one's that i remember like on right over the bay bridge in queen annes and i want to say there was a small one in southern MD since 2002.
Who knew I would find a youtuber that speaks about tornadoes and victims like true crime documentaries....
I have subbed... Very very good channel
RIP to all of the victims from this storm.
It’s a good day when a new video pops up!
Your quality is top notch!
nice work like always!! love your videos carly!!
Can't wait to watch! This is only an hour or two away from me, glad someone is covering it!
I’ve been waiting for a video about this torando!! Thank you so much
Carly, being that I'm a Native Spanish Speaker from Puerto Rico, I thought that you might be interested in knowing that "La Plata" is a Spanish Word, (Pronounced: "Lah Plah-Tah") & means Severe Difference Things in Spanish, including "SILVER," (The Metal & Ore,) "MONEY," (Particularly Coins or Change,) & SILVERWARE, UTENSILS or CUTLERY.
I just found that very interesting.
Since The Spanish landed & Claimed Land Far To The South of that Area area, I find it Interesting that this Town has a Spanish Name..
About this event, I remember hearing about it & that it was a rated "F-5." I honestly thought that maybe they'd misreported the State, since it was in The Western States & Territories where The Gold & Silver Rush took place as well as Original Land Claims by Spain & many Cities & Towns with Spanish Names. Plus, I knew that an "F-5" would be an Extremely Rare Event in that region, where such an event would be a Very Rare occurrence & Very Newsworthy, attracting More Media Attention than a Blurb in The Newspaper.
Good to see a new video from you again. I look forward to the next one!
G-d Bless!
I was in this storm.
(As you point out) The weather showed thunderstorms only so my dad thought it was safe to go out, I remember feeling uneasy seeing the sky while we drove off on our way. Green clouds with deep ripples, like looking at the ocean almost.
My father, sister and I had gone shopping at the Safeway connected to the CVS (shown in video) and as we were in the checkout line we started hearing the massive roaring. It’s so hard to explain the sound, but you could feel it in your chest!! The lights started flickering and went out. That’s when we saw it. My dad raced to the front window of the Safeway and watched the tornado rip the kfc in half. As Safeway employees tried ushering us shoppers to safety the roof over the back end of the store was ripped off and thrown toward the cvs. We hunkered down around the cash registers and waited for it to pass. I remember it happening fairly quickly. Once it passed my dad grabbed some disposable cameras and started handing them to folks to take damage photos for insurance purposes etc. walking back to his work van was so otherworldly. Cars completely flipped over, buildings were torn apart, all in the matter of a shopping trip our town was dismantled. The church steeple was torn away, and our drive home through the heart of town, up route 6 was just trees and destruction. The neighborhood right before our house (Normandie woods) was completely leveled. All that was left were concrete slabs. Thankfully though, the tornado didn’t affect our house mostly, (shattered windows, and torn up trees but atleast the house was standing!) and our direct neighbor who was a great family friend. We spent the next few days cleaning up route 6/ Charles street with Boy Scouts and other friends and families from the community. We left la plata a few years after this for different reasons but I always talk about the impact this storm had on us!
Edit to add:: I also remember the constant changing in ratings and how confusing it was but most people in town called it an f5 for a long time
Wow, awesome video presentation Carly. Fascinating!
Best tornado channel on youtube, I like the respect shown to the victims
Oh thank you!
Greatly done editing, well put together video and coverage Carly!
Thanks!
I didn’t know about this one! Thanks for your great videos
This has been educational. Thank you!
Also thank you for covering these devastating yet lesser known events.
Beautifully done.
Nice job once again Miss Carly. I grew up in VA and I definitely remember this. I believe I suggested it a while back along with other subs.
You may find it interesting that just 7 months prior (September 24 2001)to the LaPlata f4 there was another f4 in College Park Maryland about 45 miles from LaPlata. Tragically, that tornado killed two college students and injured 50+. I suppose because it occurred only weeks after 9/11 , it didn’t get national attention?
Ms. Carly Anna, your videos get better and better. Congratulations.
