    I remember this. I was at Cedar Point amusement park. Some people were stuck on the roller coasters and had to walk down. You couldn't get gas or even a soda. I stopped at a motel and they gave me a cup of coffee so that I could stay awake to drive back to Cleveland. Power came back on the next morning.

    I was on the train in NYC when the train came to a sudden halt. Not a screeching halt - one minute we were flying down the express track on the E train and in the next moment the train came to a dead stop like it had hit a wall. Then the lights flickered and went out. There was residual lighting so we weren’t sitting in complete darkness. And the F train on the local track was also halted next to us. There was complete silence in our car except for the sounds from above ground - cars honking, sirens. And everyone glanced at each other in nervous silence. We were all thinking the same thing - is this a repeat of 9/11? The silence was broken by the crackling voice of the conductor who sounded just as puzzled as we were. He apologized, but he didn’t know what had happened. He’d update us as soon as he had anything to share. After about an hour, MTA workers with flashlights guided us through the train to a plank that they’d lined up between the E and F trains in one car and onto the platform and through the station which was in absolute pitch darkness except for the lights of the workers’ flashlights and up the stairs and into the bright sunshine of a warm August afternoon. Someone was loudly playing the radio from their parked car (1010 WINS), and passersby paused briefly for an update, and that’s how I learned that not only were we experiencing a blackout, so was the entire Northeast.

      I was 31 working in NYC (my hometown). It was a party like atmosphere. lots of fun. Everyone helped each other. No looting. Would never be like that now. You'd see large roving gangs of black and hispanic youth robbing, stealing, murdering NYers all night long while the NYPD watches. It'd be pure chaos worse than 9/11.

    What I remember most about the 2003 blackout? It brought home a point made after the terror attacks in 2001. When New Yorkers are pushed to their limits they exhude the most incredible humanity. I worked midtown on 57th/7th and lived in Park Slope in Brooklyn. Everything was shut down so this meant I was going to have to walk the 10 miles home. What a beautfiul experience it was. A flatbed was passing on 7th Avenue was stopping and offering rides up to Christopher St. While on the walk to the Brooklyn Bridge. Vendors were giving food and water away so to prevent spoilage. There was plenty of Ice Cream, salads, restaurants offering already prepared foods (I had a wonderful Ravioli) As we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge I made 3 new friends I have until this day. There was little in the way of complaining, but a lot of boom box music, people chatting, neighbors speaking;; bascially New Yorkers enjoying the sheer humanity of this event after experiencing the trauma of 9/11.
    I've since left New York about 8 years ago, and returned to my hometown of Los Angeles. As much as I love this city, it's great weather and all it has to offer, I have yet experienced this level of humanity, people helping strangers and just being human here in L.A. not even during big earthquakes have I seen this level people rising to the occasion.

    What’s so crazy about this is: I’m so obsessed with all of the videos regarding this topic that I fall asleep to the media coverage surrounding this topic. So the fact that there’s another 20 minute video that’s been uploaded to TH-cam 9 hours ago is such a crazy occurrence for me. I believe the media coverage video is from CBS as well. This is actually such a coincidence, like the chances of this happening is so rare and odd. I’ve been falling asleep to media coverage regarding this for about 2 to 3 weeks now, maybe even a month! And now I have another video on this topic. By the way, I watch these videos because I’m stuck in the 2000s and I miss everything 2000s and this was a monumental moment, a core memory for me. It’s almost as if you guys knew I was watching these videos regarding this topic… hmm 🤔 🧐 🤨

      I was 21 at the time and I will always remember this blackout. I agree, everything about the 90s and early 2000's were the best and I have some good memories during the power outage that will be with me forever.

    • @xierraleone1905
      @xierraleone1905 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tankerock you were 21 and I was 7. But for some strange reason, I have a very good memory when it comes to my childhood. I lived on Jane and Wilson in Toronto. And just like you, I have some memories from that time that I will remember forever and cherish forever. My favourite decade is the 2000s. I’m very much aware of what the 90s provided, and I would say that the 90s would be second to the 2000s only because the 2000s had everything 90s and a little bit of technology that the 90s didn’t have. In the 2000s, we also still had human interaction, old and new technology, great television, great movies, great music, and gaming was at its all time high. But this blackout that occurred, definitely brought everyone together. Everyone would go outside and just talk to each other and play with each other and it’s like everyone in my neighbourhood just grew closer. Gosh! Even talking about this right now is pissing me off because I just wish things were like that again. Now everything is so diluted and ever since Covid, I’ve been saying that we’ve been living on earth’s leftovers because nothing feels new or unique or refreshing. Everything just feels bland now. So I will continue to keep falling asleep to media coverage from the early 2000s. I now even fall asleep to the media coverage from the winter storm of 2003. TH-cam is my only time machine to revisit those memories and bask in all of its greatness and nostalgia. I love It here!

    I remember the blackout, I was almost 15 years old and it was two weeks before school started. I lived in Greenwich, CT at the time. My aunt had just gotten home from work, but because there was no power, we didn't have any air conditioning. We went out joyriding. We got a flat tire, so we had to wait for a tow truck to come and change it. We got home a few hours later, power was restored a little while after that. It was very hot that day, over 85 degrees, so a lot of people were using air conditioners and fans, that placed a higher strain on energy usage. We take electricity for granted.

    First I had to walk down 38 steps to get out of my office building located on 45th and Broadway. Times Square was snarled with people and traffic. I gathered up some of my co-workers and shouted: I am WALKING TO BROOKLYN, who's with me?' I started to wind my way down towards the Manhattan Bridge with 8 million of my fellow New Yorkers! It was a hot August day and thankfully we had tons of people giving away bottles of water. It was an experience I don't need to ever experience again.
