Wow! MARVELOUS performance by all 3 of these outstanding musicians. I am particularly impressed by Sam Bush's mandolin work, but the whole performance was just incredible!
Wikipedia calls it “a well-known American folk and gospel song likely originating in the early 19th century” which would make it around 200 years old. The melancholy melody is something that really gets to you in the mysterious way that music works with our emotions. A true classic!
this is very good. bobby and sam are great as always. allison is also good but she could play in my band even if she couldn't hit a lick. i think i'm in love. i can say that allison because my wife doesn't listen to bluegrass. ha!
Three of our best musicians playing what might be our oldest folk tune.

A true classic!
Sounds so similar to 'Summertime' to me. I'm sure Gershwin would have been familiar with it.
I'm proud to call Bobby my friend. Such a soulful fiddle player. His playing reaches down your throat and pulls your heart out by the roots.
💕
Arkansas Red That’s some pretty violent imagery, it sounds like you are describing a serial killer, not a talented musician.
I LOVE this performance!
Love this old song 🎵 ❤ i recorded it my self I played all the instruments myself
simply masterful!
it s just like Bobby to play so wonderful and to actually do the melody
Wayfaring strangerなんと素晴らしい素敵な曲でしょうか、一番好きな曲です。
Awesome performance!
Special thanks to Panamaredd, Forrest O'Connor, Harvard University and Banjo.
Best wishes to all from Less Than Face Productions.
Breath taking
I've watched Alison play this a Gillion times for her brilliant rendering. Sure would like to know why it was played in Gm?
Totally gorgeous from all three
what a jam
5-stringed fiddle. Crazy.
Great post. Thanks for sharing.
Sam Bush is SUCH a Bad Ass Mandloin player. Love his album Circles Around Me too - check it out if you haven't already.

Well done!!!!
That fiddle.....
Probly the only Harvard grad to professionally play banjo in a show at Harvard.
Alison Brown was an award winning banjo player in the early '90s
Actually he's improving on the melody same as the other two...:)
Sigh....... should have a million or 2 views
I didn't know Bobby Hicks played a five string fiddle
Alison is so cool about playing she gets less recognition.
So sweet in a sad sort of way. Not all that easy to play along with......
