Hi Mark ! We’re in Ghent this week and we followed your advices, this morning we visited the churches and cathedrals, and the belfry, they were beautiful. In the afternoon, we visited the castle and it was great. They created audioguide tours written by a famous local humorist and the tour was both informative, interesting and really funny. So clever !
Mark from Wolters World has always been very accurate & helpful with tips on traveling the world for my wife & myself. In Ghent at the moment. P.S. Ghent much better than Brugge or Antwerp.😊
My father came from Ghent and during the war when the Americans got as far as Ghent I always wondered why it was not as damaged as the rest of Belgium. My father said it was due to General George Patton with the third army. He got in touch with his German counterpart and basically said "Look youve lost the war why should we destroy such a beutifull city ? i will give you 24hrs to leave the Germans agreed and withdrew overnight, hence the minimal damage.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the "Gentse Feesten" It's a 10 day festival with cultural acts, live music on all the small squares and it's absolutely mental.
Im from florida, I went to the most recent one! My brothers band played one of the bars. Unfortunately I got stomach pains and could not explore the surrounding area. Beautiful city though
i never really thought about going to ghent before but from what you say and all the pictures it looks really sick! ill have to check it out if i head to belgium at some point.
You're making it harder and harder for me - I had decided to skip Belgium entirely but then you+Rick Steve's sold me on Bruges and then there was Leuven+Antwerp station and now THIS. Too many nice places man! Lol
Ghent is the number 1 city to visit in Belgium. Avoid Bruges, take Antwerp instead. (Bruges is flooded with tourists). Ghent is a beautiful medieval city; Charles V left a huge mark on it. Check out the real historical buildings, not just the ones that have been reconstructed ("old" is an understatement). It's a misconception that our favorite food is mussels and fries. Try the fries from a real frietkot; eat bouletten instead of mussels or try or high cuisine (we actually do have a lot of Michelin-rated restaurants or others that serve high-quality food). Go shopping in our beautiful boutiques, get totally lost in the small streets. Enjoy Ghent, it's a special place with a special atmosphere.
Thank u so much..very informative and entertaining videos..just one question..I'm a single Kuwaiti planning a trip on my own to Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany: which country am I more likely to face a language barrier?
yes, fly to Brussels then the train to Ghent is about 35 minutes. they go a couple times an hour or more. watch our 5 love and hates of Ghent video for even more tips
