What I especially like about Steely Dan: The music is sophisticated and fairly complex, yet it never ever loses the underlying groove.

The common theme in their music is "it is tasteful" and because of that the level of complexity, or the lack thereof, becomes less of a hindrance to the average listener.

Denny Dias was the original bandmember in NY who placed the ad in the paper "Keyboardist and bassist wanted - must have jazz chops. Assholes need not apply" to which Walter and Donald responded. Long story short; Denny soon fired the rest of the band, and the three moved to California - the rest is History.

Both, are two of my favorite deep SD cuts. One is a bit funky and the other (YGTII) more jazz influenced. The guitar solo in YGTII sometimes brings me to tears, it is so beautiful its hard to keep in the emotion. The song could be easily played in a Jazz club without the singing. Thank you!!!

49 years ago- which doesn’t seem possible- i walked into Lake St. Station record store on the campus of UW-Madison. I was a freshman and as i browsed, there was a woman, all alone, dancing like there was no tomorrow, next to the front counter. The music wafting through the store turned out to be ‘Your Gold Teeth’ and it was so fascinating and so unlike anything else id heard at the time, i grabbed a copy (guessing about $4?)
and starting my amazing, lifelong journey with Steely Dan- so glad you two have discovered them as well-- you’re just getting your feet wet!! Enjoy the upcoming concert!

I was a college freshman in 1973 living in the campus dorm. I remember being in the lunch line at the Student Union building and hearing music blasting through the speakers. "Reeling in the Years" was often heard. I went on to buy "Can't Buy A Thrill" and every other Steely Dan album that followed on vinyl. A wonderful part of my collection! But more than that, I was a young man living through all of this music history!

From that point I devoured Steely Dan as fast as i could afford it. I now, at this age, know every song like the back of my hand and Alex, there isn't a dud in the entire catalogue. I relish the moments when a particular change up is on its way and then to see the looks on your faces when it's revealed is just wonderful. I was in jr. and sr. high school when the Dan started putting out hits, which I heard often on the radio. I never bought any of their albums during that time; I was focused elsewhere (Chicago; Loggins & Messina; Jim Croce; Seals & Crofts; Moody Blues; Supertramp). After a couple years as a missionary in Indonesia, I made a calculated effort to expand my library; acquiring two or three albums at a time every Friday (payday) after work at Licorice Pizza (the best record store ever). I was such a faithful patron they gave me the employee discount. That's when I started buying up all the Steely Dan (which at that time was only seven albums), and Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis, Stevie Wonder, and started branching off into Jazz (John Klemmer, Dave Brubeck, Pat Metheny, Bob James). So, I've loved Steely Dan for forty+ years, but watching reaction videos like yours, really helps me appreciate them (and others) more--much more--than I did. So, thank you for that. And, I don't think you'll find a single stinker in the bunch. The only two songs that popped into my head when you said that you hoped you wouldn't hate any Steely Dan songs, were East St. Louis Toodle-oo, a cover of a Duke Ellington tune, and The Fez, an irresistible groove with nothing of consequence to relay other than the singer promises to always wear prophylactic protection during his prurient past times. But, as far as I'm concerned, they're fun. Perhaps not as dynamic as the rest of the catalogue, but not even close to crappy...
Thanks for all you do to entertain us.

That was Jeff Porcaro on the drums on Your Gold Teeth Two, and I think he was either 16 or 18 years old when he laid that track down.
    Talk about a prodigy!
To me the whole Katy Lied album…but especially Your Gold Teeth 2, foreshadowed the sound of the Aja record. In fact I call Katy Lied “Aja Junior“ for that very reason.
The interesting thing is they did the Royal Scam before they finally went full on in the direction of Aja, so it was an incredibly interesting diversion before they really let it fly on Aja.❤️

The guitar solo on Gold Teeth II was yet another epic solo by Denny Dias. He was one of my favorite Steely Dan guitarists (along with Larry Carlton...of course!) because of the creativity, phrasing, feel and dynamics in his solos which made them interesting and memorable. Fun Denny Dias trivia....after doing music full time, he went on to become a programmer and lead developer for the Nantucket Corporation who made a programming language called Clipper which was used to create database and business programs in the days of MS-DOS, although he still continued to play music part time.

Life long Dan fan here, grew up on their music from Can’t Buy a Thrill onward. The first Gold Teeth has that amazing keyboard solo that flows right into another killer guitar solo. The lyrics are as sophisticated as the music, classic lines one after the next.
“Torture is the main attraction, I don’t need that kind of action”.
You guys are fun to watch, glad you finally caught the SD bug...hope the concert was awesome! I’ve seen them many times along with Donald Fagen solo shows and Dukes of September with Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. All memorable shows!

    K. I’ve been watching u guys for a while. Mostly steely Dan stuff. Let me say, ur reactions r worthy, but ur friendship with each other is profound. Many of us including myself, have a tainted attitude toward marriage. I’m the product of a twice broken home, that has soiled my perception of marriage, but I must say, ur example of true friendship in marriage has given me hope that I could marry a friend that would provide friendship for life. Thank u for putting urself out there. I’ll bet many of us find hope in ur example. God bless.

The guitar lead by Denny Dias on Gold Teeth II is as clean sounding as any I've heard on a Dan song. The story goes that Denny placed an ad in The Village Voice looking for a keyboard and base player and Fagen and Becker answered, the rest was history. One know rumor (maybe fact) about Denny is that he doesn’t bend his strings...hard to imagine a player at his level never bending a string. He also, plays that unreal electric Sitar lead on Do It Again.

Denny was one of the original members and had much of the guitar input throughout many of their albums especially in the early years. Great to enjoy Gold Teeth with you "two"! S.G.

Denny Dias is ridiculously unheralded as a founding member of Steely Dan. His electric sitar solo on Do It Again makes makes that tune and his bebop solo part on Bodhisattva is also great. There are others but his solo on Your Gold Teeth II is poetry.

I’ve been a fan of the Dan since the 70s(my wife says I play nothing else) but I’ve never listened to GT and GT2 back to back. I have just realised that one of the key elements to their music are the gaps. By that I mean the periods when only one or two instruments come through, all the while you’re waiting for the others to restart and for that next note to drop and then it comes in at an unexpected level, chord or direction. That possibly sums up Steely Dan. You can listen to them for 50 years+ and still hear and learn something new in the music.👍🏻

The “There ain’t nothing in Chicago for a monkey woman to do” is a nod to Count Basie’s “Going to Chicago Blues” where he says “There ain't nothing in Chicago that a monkey woman can do.” Studied jazzers from the very beginning.

Denny Diaz was an original member. In fact, it was his band and Donald and Walter joined it. It became obvious that their songs and musicianship was the heart of the group and it became their band.
You are on my favorite album now. Boston Rag is fantastic. The whole album is great.
Given your new attire you should do Show Biz Kids. You’ve “got the Steely Dan T-Shirt”! It was a song where they made fun of LA life, including themselves.

Dias advertised for a piano player and guitarist. "No hang-ups." Becker and Fagen answered the ad. When Garry Katz later invited songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen to LA, they decided to record as a band, brought Denny Dias, Skunk Baxter, Jim Hodder in as musicians. David Palmer was brought in as the frontman but didn't have the attitude for the songs. Donald Fagen became the lead singer halfway through the Can't Buy a Thrill recording by default.

NicknLex, you guys are wonderful. Sorry that I didn't comment a year ago at the time of this video. I just wanted to say that I love your reaction to Steely Dan's music. You mentioned in another video that we geriatrics were so blessed to hear this music back when it was first released. I'm 64, and I remember what I was doing back then when I first heard their music. But think about it; you too are blessed to hear such musicianship like Steely Dan. In fact, this is the legacy that is Steely Dan. A hundred years from now, someone will hear it, and the music will be just as valid as it was when it was first released.

There's a lot of people who really love the Countdown and Katy period of the Dan, myself included! There was a greater urgent rockier quality and lively excitement to their playing, like the fervency of young love. Denny Dias and Jeff "Skunk" (at that time a very pungent and powerful strain of indica weed and hence the funny nickname) Baxter were part of the Steely Dan arsenal right from the beginning. Then did you notice Walter's super witty lyrics on Your Gold Teeth with the wording that not only sounded right but actually made some sense too. Who could forget the immortal lines: "Torture was the main attraction, I don't need that kind of action." Totally classic!

Your Gold Teeth II is certainly in my top 1000 favorite songs by Steely Dan :).
No really it's in my top 5, and out of those 5 I'm not picking a favorite because it could be any of those on a particular day. But to me this is one of the highlights of Katy Lied.
I think they created a genre of music when they made this song, smooth jazz.

Sorry for all the comments but I was stationed in Germany when "Countdown" was released and I listened to it every day. It quickly became my favorite album and then just followed Steely Dan for the rest of their career. I finally got to see them live in Dallas and they are coming soon to Fort Worth but I bought ticket for Sir Paul McCartney and cant afford more tickets after that. Keep Steely!!!

You're right about the jazz vibes -- I detected a bit of Vince Guaraldi Trio in the song, his earlier stuff that was the soundtrack from the earlier Peanuts/Charlie Brown TV specials. And I'll agree that you next have to do Show Biz Kids from Countdown to Ecstasy, with the lyric line "they've got the Steely Dan T-Shirt"...
