They burn a lot more oil than a 4 stroke piston engine, even when brand new. They have a partial-total loss oiling system; and on top of that, most rotary owners worth their salt run 2cycle premix in the gas for extra protection. I think of rotaries as more like a 2 stroke in terms of sound, power delivery, oiling, and simplicity. That said, they are 4 cycle engines.
Used to have full Agency Power catback system, catless midpipe and it was honestly too loud for a comfortable daily. I had to wear earplugs to drive to work and was horrible going on the highway for any length of time. I swapped to a high flow cat BHR midpipe and it's way better.
Metallic as in trumpety? Like a 350Z? I think I know what you mean, the FD and RX8 have wildly different porting and other things done that make them more friendly to emissions and regular driving. I find carbed rotaries to sound better as well, the same way a carbed 2 stroke engine sounds meaner than an EFI one.

I like the metallic sound of the early rotaries, the RX7 and RX8 both sound bad, not metallic at all , sound like a piston motor

Lastly, I would say the RX7 sounds better than the Renesis RX8 engine, the Ren had a lot of changes to make it more streetable and tamer.
