One thing to note here as well that he didn't really touch upon: ALWAYS grab the fireman clothes. They are the best in the game when it comes to protection AND insulation, generally just insanely good, and they are very rare. Try not to hit zombies with anything sharp if they've got clothes you want, hit them with a blunt weapon instead. This way, you don't get clothes with a lot of holes in them...

Be aware though that the combat speed modifier on them is pretty punishing, and insulation is your enemy in the summer when the game starts. But they are really good.

Thanks for this video. I'm absolutely terrible at Project Zomboid. I have less than 10 hours in and I have probably gone through 20+ characters by now, failure after failure. So now I'm really committing to learning the game. Every time I die I look for new tips, I watch guides in my downtime and lately I've been playing every night just trying to get good. The longest I've survived is 2 days, and that was mostly inside the starter house. Hopefully this video can help me be a better survivor.

Riverside might not have many POIs but if you like taking a building and making it into a home, the post office and restaurant on either side of the hotel make for great spots to set up in. Good roofs for rain barrels and gardens and they're both right on the river for fishing.

Its almost better to do it this way depending on where you start. The zombie population peaks at some point, so getting into downtown and grabbing a bunch of shit early makes it a little bit easier. It's also easier to get fresh food, which most that you find can be frozen for later.

I just did my first game in zomboid, finished the tutorial, started up a world as a lumberjack, and started reading the pop-up help thing when i loaded, only to notice that the game wasnt paused and a zombie saw me through the window. It being my first fight, i forgot my controls for a second and got bitten four times with bleeding all over my body before i killed it. At the last second, i tore up some cloths and bandaged myself, with only a sliver of health left.
Then more zombies show up, and i decide to book-it out of my house, and after several minutes of wandering the streets, drawing random zombies, and managing to kill a few more, i finally got slapped to death searching a building. In all, i lasted barely 8 minutes. 10/10 second life, here we go!

I really like that you open with "play it however you most enjoy." That right there is what finally got me into the game. I don't really enjoy the default game modes. Apocalypse is a bit much for me, Survivor is just not quite right, and Builder is WAY too easy. But being able to take those settings and change them, fine tune them to the difficulty I want? Perfection!

1 thing that still happens to me with 250 hours in. dont get to overconfident. every other game would have you mow through zombies after a week of gameplay. in project zomboid you stay human ( aslong as you dont get bit xD ) dont rush things. i lost so many character ''oh just use the car to kill them'' car breaks down and you die. started as a rosewood main. became a louisville enjoyer :D
edit : just happened last night. i was trying to clear the warehouse middle in louisville. went on cruise control dragged them all away suddenly my engine breaks down. car wont move so now they are hitting the windows. finally they break down the car window. in my best attemp im trying to start the car and thats when i heard my clothes getting ripped apart. fearing the worst i expected 2 bites. turned out all 3 were laceration with 2 ending up infected. ( having no meds on me i had to rip my denim shirt for strips ) i still dont know how i managed to get out of that since i lost characters to alot of easier ''scenarios'' after 5 days of searching i got my saw though xD

I still don't understand why the community is obsessed with having everyone waste the first few days watching tv for skill points you will lose as soon as you go out and die, which you usually do when you are new to this game. I've been working on a perfect skill up build to maximize all the free skill points you can get in the first couple weeks:
    - Start Riverside (Optimal spawn point is right next to school)
    - Watch TV Show (Life & Living) If you tweak the hour you start (12am) you can catch the first Fishing show
    - Grab what you can from house and pick up the TV.
    - Run straight to school and drop TV in teachers lounge near front entrance.
    - Go down the hall and enter library
    - Grab Carpentry 1-2, Cooking 1-2, Fishing 1-2 and Farming 1.
    - Run back to your TV and read Cooking 1 until 6am.
Shows are every 6 hours except for 12am.
    - Read Carpentry 1, then Fishing 1 with no interruptions.
    - Drink/eat.
    - Clear your way to the gymnasium where you can find weapons (baseball bats & sticks) and helmets.
    - Stop by kitchen and grab all the fresh foods. Put all the meat in freezer.
    - Go back to your TV and read Cooking 2. Then Carpentry 2. Then Farming 1.
    - Sleep till 6 am.
    - Read Fishing 2.
    - Make sure to catch all shows (every 6 hours)
Got some free time to loot around.
    - Get a school backpack form one of the lockers.
    - Empty infirmary on first floor near kitchen.
    - Find empty bottles from garbage cans.
    - Grab Cooking 3, Carpentry 3, Foraging 1-2, Trapping 1-2 and every other skill book 1.
    - Sleep till 6am.
    - Make sure you watch all shows.
    - After the cooking show, go to kitchen and cook all the meat from the freezer which should give you the rest of your 4th cooking bar.
    - Read Cooking 3, Carpentry 3 (after Carpentry show) & Foraging 1 (to get your 2 bars in Foraging you will have to go outside and forage for a little bit to get the rest of your second bar)
After that you got some leeway in how you want to go about it. Trick is to make sure you read the skill book before the appropriate show airs. For referral, see wiki page on show times and what skills they give. You have a trapping show, a second foraging show and Cooking/Carpentry every day. After day 8 shows stop. At this point you should be done reading every book you can.
    - Run north west of the school till you reach the Video Store (few blocks).
    - Grab any of the obvious Skills videotapes like Cooking, Survival & Woodcraft.
    - Also look for Carzone tapes (Mechanics) along with Z Squad 2.03 (mechanics & Metalworking), Mother's Boy (Short Blade), Dead Wrong (Shooting & Reloading)
    - Run back to your TV and watch the tapes (make sure you have read the books before watching tapes to maximize the skills multiplier)
At the end, you should have minimum of:
    - 8 Skill bars for Carpentry and Cooking.
    - 3 Bars Farming
    - 2 Bars Mechanics (Go dismantle Electronics to get your 1 Bar into Electrician and you can Hotwire cars from the get-go)
    - Almost 4 Bars Fishing.
    - 4 Bars Trapping
    - 4 Bars Foraging.
    GL!

The only things you need to do in the first few days (depending on difficulty any start date settings) are to watch certain TV channels, find a couple big hiking bags, and find a general area to call home (and methodically clear out out enough to start fortifying).
Everything else from amassing supplies, building skills, farming, and so on can be done for the rest of the game. The engine will throw plenty of fastballs at you to keep it interesting (hordes, helicopter passes, weather, NPCs, etc). Remember above all: *the game rewards patient, methodical, smart behavior.* Recklessness and panic - just like in real life - will get you killed one way or another.

This is a very common and very wrong advice for beginners. There is no value at all in watching TV when your character dies before they ever get to the stage where there's even the start of a skill change, or where that would make any difference whatsoever how high your carpentry or cooking skill is. Sure, when you've progressed to where you're comfortable in combat and have survived a few surprises, then you might start to remember this. Until then, however, smash the TV with your baseball bat for all the good it does in letting you survive your first days _as a beginner_.

I think telling new players that they need to watch the shows and have to immediately loot POIs is a good way to get them to drop the game fast, they'll just walk around and die. Play the game how you would in real life, take safety over everything and try to live for as long as you can. Worrying about skills on your first playthrough is an objectively bad way to experience this great game.

My first recommendation for new players is to do a custom game and set the zombie pop somewhere between normal and builder mode, since normal is crazy impossible if you dont know what to do, especially when your house doesnt spawn with food or weapons, while builder mode is waay to easy. Once you learn the basics and learn how to deal with hordes id set it back to normal difficulty, it wont make it easy but it will definitely be a more fair experience instead of not being able to leave your house because your surrounded by a hundred zombies despite spawning in rural rosewood.

I loved this guide, but I would say it's for advanced beginners ;) Crucial additional advice for actual beginners: Change the most puzzling default setting in the history of computer games: "Aim Outline" to "Any Weapon". The default setting is like stepping on glass repeatedly so you can learn first aid. Oh, well ;)
Second most important advice: Be aware that this game does not have the typical WASD controls but that the keyboard controls your feet while the mouse controls the direction your head and hands are pointed at, and they're independent of each other. The WASD keys do not map to forward / left / right / backward, as would be expected and as the game wrongly tells you, but to the points of the compass, or rather, up/down/left/right on the screen, with double key presses for the diagonals. That latter is a player's skill you will have to get accustomed to and is the main reason for dying for beginners.
This pretty unique (and worthwhile) mix of controls takes some time getting used to, and it doesn't help at all that the settings don't natively let you map additional mouse buttons for actions like sneak and jog. Use third party tools for that, map some rare keystrokes onto MB3 and MB4, and you will have a much easier time fighting if you are used to "normal" mouse + keyboard controls, rather than trying to squeeze in a left control or shift while pressing W and A at the same time the moment a zombie jumps you from behind. I would also recommend using ALT instead of either shift or control, as you can easily press it with the thumb next to shoving zeds to the ground by pressing SPACE.

ngl i cant say there are many games I can recall that *dont* have that "atypical" control scheme of having your feet be independent from where you look? at least not in the modern era. i think it's pretty rare now that games would rely on some tank control thing without an independent reticle.

Yes, it takes longer to read a book, but you'll usually be fine reading the book overnight, then starting to level it up during the day afterwards, especially as a beginner if you aren't looking to risk night runs yet.

This guy: Chooses underweight and other minimally gimping traits, calmly books it to the fire station, smartly distracts zomboids and lives happily ever after
Me: Makes the weakest possible obese guy, spends two weeks starving him looting pretty much everything possible from adjacent houses, makes 1 drive around the city, discovering the fire station, builds a whole backstory to my guy about his dad being a firefighter who disappeared years back, my guy wants to go live in the fire station to live where his dad did,on my last run transporting all my CRAP to the fire station I attract a measly 7 zomboids to me, they break down the garage door, I run outside angrily to kill them all, get swarmed and lacerated in the jugular, freaking explode in a bloody mess in the fire station garage
Me again: Makes ANOTHER morbidly obese 0 muscle character who’s supposed to be the first guy’s dad, ceremoniously cry over my dead son and feign guilt about disappearing, try to rob the school on day 3 and get bitten thrice.
really helping me see where my priorities should be.

Also another thing is directly south of the rosewood fire station and police station is a farmhouse near the city but not near as much to draw attention it's a decently good place to start a base of operations or outright stay until you decide what to do it really helped me when I first started (I'm still garbage but love it)

If you love looting, than the organized trait is your go to. The description of the trait is awful, since it only says containers, making you think it's just crates, cabinets and shelves. It's backpacks too and car storage. Anything that holds items. Combined with the strength boosting traits, you'll be able to haul a good amount of gear without suffering from over encumbrance.

After playing other survival simulators like 7 Days to Die, The Long Dark, The Forest, I decided to get Project Zomboid and man it really is tough aftera handful of starting games to figure things out and find my preferred sandbox settings I've had a couple games where I've lasted a week before being bitten. The games retro tank-ish controls mixed with the harsh infection risk makes combat very risky which annoys me a bit because I prefer taking zombies out if I can but I'm very much enjoying the game. My preferred starting base in Rosewood is the 2 houses down the road to the East of the Fire Station they have Garden plots and 2 sheds that might have generators and tools, there's plenty of houses to loot plus the Fire Station and Police stations are right down the road, sure it's dangerous staying in a building with no second story but once it's boatded up it's fine I'm sure I'll move on eventually but I'm determined to make my first safe house there.

  • @allasar
    @allasar ปีที่แล้ว +2

I also start of my games in Rosewood. Then I search for hammer, saw and screwdriver, some bag to wear on the back, carpenter lvl2,3 and 4 skill books and a car.
For beginners, I would advise moving out of Rosewood until the helicopter event is over. If you take the exit by the gas station in the East of town, drive straight until you get to the first left, then follow the road until a T-junction and move North. Follow this road and you get into an unnamed town. This is a great place to get everything you need farmwise (there is a farming/hunting store) and weapons (hardware store). If you did not find the carpentry skill books, the first pink house you come across is a book store. There is also a police station, food market and gas station.
I usually stay there and level up carpentry until the helicopter event is over. If you want, you can drive further down the road since you are close to the gated community/resort/golf course.
And once the helicopter event is over, I have reached lvl 7 carpentry (which is what you need to make the strongest wooden walls (except for log walls I think), and better rain barrels). Then I return to Rosewood and I build my main base out of one of the houses that are surrounded by fences just above the zone with the doctors office - bookstore.
The whole reason to skip the helicopter event in Rosewood is so you don't waste time doing nothing. If you want to make a permanent base in Rosewood, it just messes up the population more often than not if you are present during the event.

I like this guide, but at 45 hours of gameplay I died 15 times in a row trying to secure Rosewood's firehouse doing just as you did, so that might not be best base for sub-50 hours. I found a nice alternative: Diagonally from the school, situated away from the town, there's 2 large one-story houses with sliding glass doors. The more isolated one has a shed and a back patio grill, while the other has a slide in the back & 3 garbage bins along it's side. Either one makes a great starter base, though I tend to main the more isolated one and use the other as a backup.

Super cool and it's usually what I do on the first day too. One thing I've been doing recently though is: once the very first life and living is over, I immediately make a run for the school and loot all the most important books (most importantly Carpentry I-V). Go straight for the library, break a window with whatever weapon I got in the first house. Then depending on how late it is I either do a quick stop at any house to watch the 12PM life and living (carpentry), and then head for the fire station, or I go for the fire station directly if I think I can make it to the rec room TV by 12PM. I managed to get 10 Carpentry (along with a bunch of other skills) by the end of the first week. Super helpful.

In high school, I was overweight, but I could lap the smokers on the track during P.E. at least twice before they finished the first lap, then they'd keel over straining to breathe. Pretty rare to ever see a cigarette smoker with lungs that function well under moderate to high exertion.

I very often tap A(left) and D(right) this way you get to look around 360° very fast. I use it even while I am looting zombie corpses or boxes etc... It saved my ass a lot of times and its easier than doing it with the mouse. Plus it does not close the item boxes like rightclick does. Cheers

2 GUNS ARE NOT FRIENDS sure having one is fun and all but they are loud and ammo is scarce only use it when you got an exit route(don't use it when there is one way in and out)
3 CARRY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED in my first or so runs i end up carrying multiple canfood and every item i can find from duct tape to freaking bourbons i highly advise having multiple "safe house" places you can go to to drop every thing

Second hardest is to interact with objects... Like opening the first aid kit. And i now assume is the way with sewing kit ?
So yes i play at a very easy mode currently to know how to just boil water...
No sense in playing normal if can't open toolbox, medic kit or boil water .. and what not.

    • @masterdynamo6457
      @masterdynamo6457 ปีที่แล้ว

This was three months ago, but in case you're still wondering:
All toolboxes and kits are actually just containers with ZERO special functionality. In fact, because they have weight (but don't have any functionality themselves) the containers are really only useful for a) set dressing and b) organisation.
Anyway, to access the supplies in these containers, either drop them on the ground and use the loot menu to access the goodies inside, or equip it (either primary or secondary, both work), in which case it will appear where your backpack would.
As for boiling water, you put water in a container, then put the container in an oven, then turn it on (or light it if it's a fire stove).

    • @Snobollskrieg
      @Snobollskrieg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Did you stay inside your base during the helicopter event? If so, that does it. The helicopter event will ALWAYS draw zombies to your location. If you stay inside your base during the event, it will pull zombies to your general vicinity, i.e around your base, and that always makes for a bad time. Instead, when you hear the helicopter, just grab a car and go for a ride for the whole event, far away from your base.

@@Snobollskrieg this isn't always true... if your base is completely closed, and the windows all have curtains, the helicopter doesn't know where to find you, so the zombies get dragged all over the map, instead of straight to you. If you don't have a car, get somewhere without windows, or cover the windows in any room you're in, and close the doors to rooms with windows you can't cover.

Or I spawn in the prison, find nothing and attract multiple zombies because windows are a thing, got a lot of police uniforms though... Max zombies killed in a playthrough: 3.
