    Thanks for posting about the Saab 900. I will follow progress with great interest. No cracks in my dashboard after 32 years. Only 115,000kms on the odometre. All the best from Wellington, New Zealand. I love the channel. Go well and thanks for sharing your hard work

    When I was a kid in the 70s I had a Saturday job serving petrol at a country garage. The owner's business model was selling cheap old cars, things that he rescued from scrapheaps and sheds and got going again. One thing many of them had in common was rust and poor paintwork, so he bought a large amount of mustard yellow car paint and usually painted these cars at the end of the renovations.. It was a bit slapdash and they looked a bit odd - a dozen on the forecourt sometimes, all yellow - but better than before, at least. Whenever I see a mustard yellow car, I'm reminded of that garage.

    The clutch arrangement reminds me of the Ferrari 348 and following where it's behind the rear engine and more accessible than the battery, for instance.

    The first car whit dustfilter pollenfilter and like SAAB 99 side impact protection in doors also
    protect against elk crash.

    Cool project. SAAB 900 turbo 2 door sedans are quite rare these days so well worth preserving. Intercooler became standard from 1985. I myself had a 1984 SAAB 900 turbo 8valve in the 90s, which I installed an intercooler on and a guy fixed the box and set up the turbo pressure to about 1.2 and it ran very well, about 200hp. A friend of mine had a 16 valve and he had to see himself defeated several times. 😎👍

    I wouldnt worry abaut the paint job. If you make it to nice after hours and hours of work, then you stress it all the time and have to be carefull, alerted everywhere you go that you wont ruin it. I would maybe just make little paint repairs and wax it, call it good and enjoying the car when dailying it 😎

    What is rarer about this even is that it seems to be a turbo Flat front (pre-1987) in addition to being a 2-door. I am no expert on these but I think that is one of the rarest combinations

    the apc box has two potentiometers inside.
    with some mods the box can dial in a lot of bhp, but a ton of torque.
    replace the gearbox bearings or even stock... it wont stand any hard driving wih age and wear on it.

      Rumors was that the commander was fitted with the Type-M apc box :D

    You're right that the engine is derived from the Triumph slant-4 as used in the Triumph Dolomite 1850 & Dolomite Sprint (I own a 1972 Dolomite 1850). The Triumph engine was deemed to be too unreliable by SAAB so they developed it themselves. There is a V8 version of the slant-4 which was used in the Triumph Stag. The SAAB engine was flipped 180 degrees so the front of the engine (where the timing chain and drive belts are) is at the rear in the SAAB.

      I believe that the Triumph engine was developed by Ricardo Engineering in the UK for SAAB.

    Its quite heartening to think, in that SAAB beats the heart derived from the Triumph slant 4 engine. Long lived way past the Dolomites it was intended for, even made the basis of the H Saab motor.

    I've driven a green 99 turbo2, the OG turbo Saab. Man, that thing was quick! By the standards of those days... i'm talking 1991.

    As the owner of a 1991 SPG (16v Aero), I’m glad to see the Commander back in the garage. You may want to consider sanding the paint and then getting it vinyl wrapped, instead of painted. Not sure how available this is in Denmark. Also, there are aftermarket heat wraps for the battery, if you can’t find the stock shield. Finally, I would look at replacing the plastic fuel lines. At this age they are brittle and crack easily, and are a fire hazard. Looking forward to the future videos on this one!

    The two door sedan is actually the best driving classic 900 in my opinion. Easily the stiffest body, I thought it was fun to drive. The inca wheels are not to every one's taste, to put it mildly. You'll probably need a new reflector for at least one headlight. They are for sale here in the Netherlands (saabworlddotnl), but cost 194 euros. If your engine runs poorly on the the K-jetronic, just take it out on a long hard drive. It'll probably fresh up a lot. Italian tune up and all that. Pretty nice car you have there, nice interior, good options. Exhaust manifold may also be problematic, they often leak. Hard to get. These little two doors are just fun cars. Consider them as such and just throw them around. Have fun!

    In the late 80's I had a 99 Turbo fastback... man that thing was swift on the pullaway but had an insane thirst and I used to commute from Watford to Bromley and it was a tank each way.

    If you ever want to upgrade a Saab, the 99 did have a series of Triumph Stag V8's fitted for testing purposes so a Triumph V8 will fit in a 99, 900 and 9000 with the required fabrication needed of the engine mounts which never went into production so can't be sourced save by home fabrication means. The Stag V8 is basically both sides of the single slants hence why it fitted superbly... now that would be a motor to throw around the roads with pride :D

    Yes! Looking forward to see when saab is coming back in shape! I have to also weld those drivesaft tunnels from my 900 before mot, its the only hard one to do, everything else works so little bit welding and new tires im going to mot it 😊

    Love a SAAB and learnt more about yours in 14:29secs than I ever knew in my lifetime 😂, great new hat Seppo 👌🏻, I have a very similar one on my Tea 🫖 Cosy 😁, love the new “doh doh dah doh “ outro 😂, good to keep things new & fresh 😉.

    The 2-liter engine is a swedish design. Only the 1.7 and 1.85 in the first Saab 99’s were Triumph ;-)

      Correct, the B series, H series, and later B2x4 series engines are nothing to do with the old Triumph engine. That was only the 1.7 in the very early 99's. So all these people commenting on here about the Triumph engine are wrong.

      It is still derived from the triumph engine... As far as I know, its a redesign of this engine which explains the similarities :)

    I have a pure love/hate relation with these Saabs. In my opinion the 99 is actually a very beautiful car. The 900 is basicly a modernized 99. It's not better looking but its not much worse either.
    But I really hate working on these Saabs. They are very non intuitive. The electric system has no disconnection points so it's kind of a single piece. Everything is so backwards. And you end up with tools everywhere because the Saab uses 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 size spanners for bolts and nuts. Not seldom you'll find that you need a 17mm spanner on a bolt, but a 16mm spanner for the nut on that bolt!
    And they kind of eat cylinder head gaskets. I have changed them many times. Putting the cylinder head on, with the engine still in the car, is a nightmare for your back.
    Still, I love them. They are much fun to drive. You have a great sensation that you are going really fast although you aren't. I've had many passengers asking me to slow down although I wasn't speeding. And they are great winter cars. In my opinion they tend to break down quite spectaculary. But once one get them to run they tend to work quite long times before they, well, yeah, break again.
    I'm going to build a 99 or 900 repica turbo one day. I have collected many parts and I have one car of each model.
    But you have got a Commander, and that is a pretty cool thing! I'm going to follow your work with it. I'm looking forward to hear you say one day "I'm going bck to the Citroens, they are easier to work on"..... 😊

      hahah In my opinion Saabs are quite a lot easier then Citroens... but yea they are still special...
      The 17 and 16 spanner makes sense to me... this way you only need one of each spanner! :)

    Change your traditional approach. As soon as its a bit warmer, get her outside and give her a good scrub. No, it won't fix anything but it will be much nicer to work on and for us to look at. That can include the engine bay!!. If there is still mud build up around the rusty drive shaft tunnels, that is also best left outside, than on the garage floor when you get round to fixing that rust. I guess that might be one of the first jobs, being the car killer that it is.

    I know that you don't, but
    If you are going to keep this car outside in the weather, then
    Please clean out it's gutters and drains...remove the dead leaves and rubbish from the rain channels...it only takes a few minutes and saves a lot of grief going forward.
    Is there any point in suggesting that you oil the hinges?

    I have to wonder, who was the person that thought the battery was in a really brilliant position right next to very hot things that could melt it? Not sure you'd find that on a fighter jet... :P

      All of the deign basics were pre Turbo but yes it would be better off in the boot/trunk.
