Shawn Phillips is a true hero to me. Not only with his music, but with his work as a CMT. Here's a man who received two standing ovations from a half million people at the Isle Of Wright festival, but finds more satisfaction from an elderly woman who thanked him for helping her during a medical crisis.
La Ballad is one of the most beautiful songs ever - can't remember if it was on 2nd or 1st Contribution album. Will check it out as I have both vinyl copies.
I started with Furthermore (1974) and bought it at the sales (summer 75?). And almost fifty years later is Furthermore (with Paul Buckmaster!) still a good start in the music-universe of Shawn.
Agreed. This LP blew my mind when it came out. We had a great record store in Potsdam NY in the late 1970's called the 'Isle Of You' that had a mess of amazing new finds every trip.
Second Contribution, Rumplestiltskin's Resolve, and Furthermore are all great albums. I highly recommend those as a start to diving into Shawn's discography.
I'm 30 but I grew up on his music (my dad was a huge fan) and Second Contribution is my favorite album of his!! Soooooo good!! It brings me so much nostalgia.
Absolutely agree. I'm 50 and my Dad introduced me to Shawn's music. What a pleasure and beauty his art is. He's so original, gentle, powerful and pure class. ❤🎉❤🎉❤ Thank you for being so amazing Shawn. Love and respect in 2024 in magical Wales. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I will never forget the first time I heard Shawn Phillips. It was with a huge group of friends, sitting around a fireplace in Northern Wisconsin. Someone put the record on, and the room went silent. We all just sat and listened, mesmerized by the ebb and flow of the masterpiece that is Second Contribution.
I too remember hearing Shawn for the 1st time, driving my cool blue 67 Malibu down the road and "Woman" came on the radio. I loved all his works then and at age 71, he still moves me. I have introduced many people to him over the years. So glad that he is still putting out beautiful music. Love you Shawn.
Shawn just released a new 3CD box set entitled "Shawn Phillips Live In The Seventies" which is a fantastic collection of him playing solo, and with different bands he's had. The remixing and remastering is top notch. It's available from TLAK Records (Think Like A Key). Highly recommended... recordings of Shawn at the top of his game. Just spent 2 & 1/2 months helping out on a tour this summer (2022) and he's still going strong at 80 years of age!!!
I was 12 the first time I heard Shawn Phillips....every night with my radio shack head phones on I listened to his music.....I knew all the words to every song and there was this strange safety in his voice for me....I could listen to him and I feel safe in my bed at night....my parents worked alot and some nights they worked late....so odd remembering this now at 63....
I didn't hear Shawn's music until I was 14 in 1972. By 1974, I saw the first of 45 times live. We've become friends and even rode in his motor home to one of his MN gigs. He's an amazing guy!
Up here in Quebec you grow up on Shawn. People get it. Dad saw him solo in the cafeteria of the université de Montreal in the 70s. Of note were the second contribution cuts. Shawn's output is unreal
I was glad to come across your knowledge of Shawn, i was an instant fan on the day in 1972, when i first heard him...know body i have met had heard of him, before i played his music for them..thanks Leland
Went to see Shawn in the early ‘70’s in Indianapolis. The police decided that a big group of hippies standing outside the theater must be a threat to the neighborhood, so they brought out the police dogs who were barking and straining at their leashes I suppose to intimidate the crowd before the doors opened. We finally got in and Shawn just took everyone to another plane of existence and completely washed away the police state vibe. His voice is transcendent. His storytelling is magical. His music is pure heart.
It was 1972 when I was introduced to this brilliant man’s music. I was stationed in Taiwan while serving a three year tour of duty in the city of Tainan. I’m still listening to his music more than 50 years later. Thank you shipmate RM2 Lee H. Nelson.
I got into Shawn Phillips in !971 with "Second Contribution" immediately Bought "Collaboration" and in '73 "Bright White" I saw him around that time live and his show was simply amazing. I recently looked up exactly what year I saw him and also noticed he had been in Seattle many times which I never knew about but was glad I got to see him that one time anyway, if we only had the internet back then... I know I would have gotten notifications of his shows.
Was a fan of Shawn in the early 70’s as a Vietnam veteran friend was a big fan that shared his music with me. Thanks for sharing this . Wish I could find my old friend.
I saw him way back in 1975 (ish), in Edmonton Canada. He did a solo performance. He has the most amazingly beautiful voice I've ever heard. And a great guitarist. Have a few of is albums.
Sorry, I wanted to share one other thing. Shawn actually performed those synthed sounds heard in Motes of Dust. It was at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. As the curtains parted, there was Shawn onstage at the synth. The sounds of thunder, wind and surf echoed through the theater. Lights onstage flashed like lightning. A wind machine was positioned in such a way as to blow Shawn's waist-length hair out and around him. To say this was impressive is an understatement. Incredible!
Such a great video Leland! I couldn't agree more, Shawn is extremely original. I was lucky to take part on one of his latest albums (Continuance) as the main drummer, it was one of the best recording experiences I've ever had.
I so love the expression in your face and your body and in your movement. That is the only way one should experience Shawn Phillips. You feel him in your bones you feel him in your heart you feel him in your soul. He is amazing and the way you enjoy his music it's so gratifying.
I saw Shawn twice at The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach in the 70's. He played an "in tune" 12 string along with his longtime keyboard player, and he was a great storyteller re his music. I had his first 3 albums - loved em, and I'm reminded of how long he could hold a note and use his voice as an instrument. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this. I have just recently become aware of Shawn Phillips and it's one of those "how did I miss this?" type of things. Then this week I got booked to open up for him in SoCal in Feb. So cool. Be well Leland, when I see you at NAMM, I will wave and say hi.
Loved Shawn Phillips' "Motes of Dust". . . uplifted my spirits and energy, Leland. Thank you. Your voice is integral to your person and your music. I am so thankful that you are part of our community. Wise Elder. Young Heart. Lovely stories and memories to help us make our way through this. Take care with your Energy, Leland. Our Light will Prevail. Your Channel and Clubhouse ring true. :)
Year unknown. College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. Shawn Phillips and Peter Robinson. Just the two of them. Audience sat on the floor of the lunchroom. A string on Shawn’s 12-string broke during a song. He just kept playing. Fabulous concert! I will never forget it.
Fell in Love with Shawn in my Twenties. I’m 68 now… And I still get strong ‘Vibes’, and Great Lift to my Spirit listening to the Music, and that Most Amazing Voice! I saw him in concert at The Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts in the 70’s. just found this video! And I’m staying in touch!
I have had the honor and pleasure to tour with Shawn Phillips and played many a gig with him. He is one of God's great gifts to music. Thank you Leland for your contributions to Shawn''s music, and the many, many songs you have contributed to our life's soundtrack. Top flight!
Hey, Lee and all. It's remarkable how much Shawn Phillips does not sound like Dolly Parton. Thank you for taking the extra time to fix the day's feature!
I loved this, thank you, Lee! I've been fortunate to have seen Shawn Phillips in concert a number of times over the years in and around the Chicago area. I've always admired the fact that he stayed true to his creativity and refused to go mainstream simply to make more money. His vocal range was said to be over 4 octaves and because he practiced yoga, he could hold a note for an unbelievable amount of time. Shawn has a TH-cam channel and although his voice is not quite what it once was, he continues to create music he and so many others love. Once again, thank you for sharing, Lee.
Hello again Leland❣️ Thank you for being here everyday. WOW! This is so beautiful. Another wonderful artist to add to my search list. Have fun with the guys today. Can't wait to hear the result. Stay safe everyone 🤗 and have a great rest of your day👍😉🌟🌼
One last thing and I'll shut up. Lee, you played on "I'm An American Child (On A Nuclear Pile)" on this same album, Transcendence. I recommend everyone check this out. Not only is Lee's bass playing stellar, the lyrics to the song are still timely.
Such a unique voice and songwriter. Evokes so many memories. I was 12 in 1970 when his 'Second Contribution' found its way to our house via my eldest sibling's boyfriend who had hair almost as long as Mr. Phillips (and a nice Gibson acoustic I longed to play). The songs on that album, especially the ballad, stir up vivid memories of place and time. I still have the old thing, scuffed and abraded as it is. Many thanks.
Thx for broadening my horizons. First time hearing Shawn, love it. I don’t miss a day, ever. Please don’t stop the shout-outs. Don’t listen to the haters.
Hi Lee. Thanks for letting us into Shawn's music. I'm old school so I listened with cans on as I always do. This is atmospheric and beautiful music. it has a monumental feel to it and is very powerful. I shall check him out further. have a great day with Joe and the gang.
I met Shawn Phillips in 1976 in Phoenix Arizona Rumplestilksens Resolve was the latest album.I have always thought Motes of Dust was the best lyrics and music of all compositions.I am a long haired long bearded musician 70 years old.
I have always known and remembered Shawn for the theme song to Lost Horizon, which I've always loved. I'm one of the 10% who really liked the musical version and that song has stayed with me through the decades. I remember hearing once that he was the singing of another song I liked from a movie, but, dang, it's out of my memory now, but I verified he was the singer, listened to it again, and knew it was him. Anyway, Shawn and Lost Horizon are pretty permanent in my brain.
Michael Kamen had a band called New York Rock Ensemble in the late 60s early 70s. I had their Roll Over LP as a kid. At that time, my dad toured Venezuela as part of a tour package in 71 and 72 - a different act, but he got to know Michael, as well as an under-appreciated guitarist-singer-songwriter Paul Pena (also on the tour), who wrote Steve Miller's hit "Jet Airliner". (My dad was doing Christmas carols on an ARP 2500 synthesizer, which was still a new toy in the music business). Love Shawn's song here - I'll have to check him out.
So glad to learn about your page from Jack Conte. Always loved your playing on "I Cannot Believe It's True" (among others!). Kudos for the vax shout-out. That wouldn't happen to be a St. Nick outfit hanging on the door, would it?
Yeah, wow. I've loved his music since I was, I don't know maybe 15 or 16 yrs old. I' m 69 now. I was going to become angry, no visual. Oh wow. I've missed him. Thank you
👍👍 Back in the day, KNX fm used to play "Dream Queen" pretty regularly and that distinctive sound always stuck with me. So when google came along I did look him up and it was fascinating.... Hope the day's endeavors went well!!
Shawn I finally found a song of yours by accident that I heard at a friends house back in the 70's. It really struck me as something special but for some reason I didn't buy the Album Faces. The song is We. I had been doing searches for She. It was my Friend Dave Verbin who had your album. Last year when I was taking him to chemo and helping him out in other ways I asked him about the song and he said he couldn't help me. He owned hundreds if not thousands of albums. Well tonight I was perusing TH-cam and saw a Midnight Special episode that Jim Croce was hosting and you were. one. of the guest performers. When you sang I immediately knew I had finally found the artist of the song I had been searching for decades. I did a search for you and the songs that you had composed but no She. I finally saw We and clicked on it and the cover of the Faces album appeared. It brought back such memories and I realized that my long search had ended. It was an emotional moment for me when I heard your voice singing this very special song. Thank you for this gift of music.
I haven't listened to Transcendence in so long. Thank you for stirring up memories from ages ago. He played at Vancouver's The Egress in the early 70s. Shawn had a huge following among the westcoast flower children. Life seemed so much simpler then. ♡
Love Shawn Philips - thanks for this, Lee. Funny story - I used to listen obsessively to Shawn's 'Second Contribution" album as a young teenager before moving to the US, and then it turns out that at about the same time I moved to the States, he had moved to MY home country of South Africa and was living a few miles from where my parents lived. I think he stayed there for about ten years before returning to the US. World citizen for sure. And keep preaching your truth!
I have all of his A&M vinyl recordings, which are well worth a listen and much more marketable. He has had some songs that charted too. He co-wrote "Mellow Yellow" with Donovan, not sure if he ever got credit and money from that.. I think he was also in the background vocals for "All you need is love", the live version.
What a Great Channel This is,Thanks for Sharing These Videos,Dont Leave alot of Comments But Want you to know you are Appreciated...Have a Great Day 🤘🖤🙏
Shawn Phillips..he of the really long song title..SWWFHMATSITAYKILYBBIGTHTL...She Was Waitin’ For Her Mother At The Station In Torino And You Know I Love You Baby But It’s Getting Too Heavy To Laugh
I had two of his albums in the early seventies. He sings one song from the the 1973 " Lost Horizon" Shangrilah movies soundtrack. With Peter Finch, Liv Ullmann, Sally Kellerman, George Kennedy. " Have you ever been to a place where the pounding of the Guns don´t sound anymore.."
Hello! Good Afternoon ! Sounds like your Afternoon will be a blast. Thanks for the share. Beautiful music 🎶 How does one become a member of the fan club and the online meetings?
Shawn Phillips is a true hero to me. Not only with his music, but with his work as a CMT. Absolutely! He is an amazing man.
Wow John Wayne 👏
I thank God for my dad introducing me to his music when I was young.
Shawn has been important in my life since 1969. His lyrics grew me up and set me straight.
Guys, if you are just learning about Shawn Phillips, start with his “Second Contribution” album. It is a masterpiece.

He is so down to earth
same here, fan since 72. came to hear me play in memphis in the early 90s & we talked for an hour.

Leland, thanks so much for playing Shawn. He was my favorite artists when I lived in Montreal. He is a gift to us all.
I lived there, but never got
to see him. My brother has
seen him many times in
Montreal. Genius is an
understatement !!!
Great musician and songwriter. Saw Shawn in Cleveland back in the 70s

My fist time hearing Shawn Phillips was at Ferguson Unit near Madisonville Texas in 1971, one of the absolute best…

I'd never heard of Shawn Phillips. Pretty impressive.
I saw Shawn Phillips 3 times in the seventies while appreciating his albums since early seventies.

A girlfriend in Carrollton, GA. in 1971 loved Shaun Phillips, especially his hair. 'Second Contribution' is a winner...HAPPY HOLIDAYS LELAND.
I have always adored Shawn Phillips. I had the pleasure of seeing him at a small venue in Moncton, NB Quite a few years ago. So enjoyed him!!!

Love Shawn. Still have his album. His voice and his range are amazing! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the shout out Leland. We also booked you to play on Shawn's No Category CD in 2004. Give our regards to J. Peter Robinson.
Very nice, I like Shawn. if you get a chance, put up a minute or two from the studio today. Was always a fan of Walsh, since the James Gang days!!
Thanks Lee. Not familiar with SP but now a fan!! Very haunting!! Appreciate you putting this up.

Hey Shawn .. Hi from Montreal ... Remember in 1974 with the cape? You still are great today with the beard. Well i'm as old as you are. C'est la vie !
Great sounds , and bass! Thank You as always!
Joe Walsh is the funniest and is remarkable and GREAT!! Say hi from Rawkin J in Montréal!! Have a great time!
👍👍 Back in the day, KNX fm used to play "Dream Queen" pretty regularly and that distinctive sound always stuck with me. So when google came along I did look him up and it was fascinating....

Thank you, Lee for highlighting this incredible artist.
Heard ms. Lonely on radio one on london in the 70s then saw shawn in a concert and have bought all his lps and now cds.
My favorite LP Collaberation. Yellow Flowers.
Shawn, you are in my heart.

Thank you for churning out #782!
This is the trip in the universe, the door of god in the consciousness thank you for your energy
Thanks for Shawn!!!
My Favorite Poet Musician. Love you Shawn!

Your the best.Thank you
I had two of his albums in the early seventies. He sings one song from the the 1973 " Lost Horizon" Shangrilah movies soundtrack. With Peter Finch, Liv Ullmann, Sally Kellerman, George Kennedy. " Have you ever been to a place where the pounding of the Guns don´t sound anymore.."
