What a beautiful shoreline. The water is so clear. So nice to see the Mrs. out keeping you company on this one. I’ll have to venture up North and visit Michigan some day. It really looks so beautiful. I too, often wonder why there aren’t more people around. Unless you are heading out at the crack of dawn, I don’t get it.
We arrived a little before 4:00. We met two women rock hunters leaving the beach when we arrived. I have no idea why there weren’t more people there, but I enjoyed having the place to ourselves.
I enjoyed seeing you and Nancy out together rockhounding! Really enjoy your videos and the information you give out.

Not rock related, but I live in Michigan and it's been YEARS since I've been to any of the lakes. Your videos really make me want to make a trip.
If you live in Michigan, you have to take time to get to the water once in awhile.
I always pick up the blue chert. They are generally small so I put them in a sealed jar filled with mineral oil. Looks cool!
You've inspired us to keep an eye at the ground when we're outside - and to buy a tumbler! Thanks to you and Nancy for these great videos!
WARNING !!! This can be very addictive ! Be sure to watch Rob’s video “ Rock Tumbling Tutorial For Rotary Tumblers and Ceramic Media “ if you get that tumbler as the instructions that come with them are often incomplete and very misleading. Have fun, you’ll love it ! 😀
The tumbler will give you something to look forward to when you get home with your rocks. It’s like the rocks are fun twice.

Even Nancy throws rocks back, I would have put in the bucket ! Then you get excited about chert / flint, you should visit Suffolk and Norfolk in England, the bucket would hopefully be full.

That was an awesome pavilion at that park ! Wow and what a beautiful day !!! You guys really found some unique stuff. I would have probably brought a lot of that home just to see what it looked like after it was tumbled. I’m getting to be a lot more selective though. In addition to looking for a pretty rock I’m also learning to look for features that make them a bad candidate for tumbling such as cracks, pits and deep crevices. Nice to see Nancy out with you !
It was nice to have Nancy with me. Her tolerance for rock hunting is about two hours, which is about how long we were out that day.

The not pudding stone is pretty. I’ve never seen one before. That is a very pretty granite Nancy had. Horn coral is interesting to me. I always pick them up not knowing their name at the time. You’re the reason I know the name now. Thank you. Cool stone with a hole. Beautiful clear water. Thank you both for sharing. It be nice to walk behind you. The pudding stones were so pretty. What are pudding stones made of , besides jasper? The drone footage was very fascinating. The area looked so cool when viewed from up high like that. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😍🥰😇😍🥰😇😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The main rock is quartzite. The pebbles are chert, jasper, and quartz among others.

You’ve been watching my videos for a while, so you shouldn’t be too surprised by that.
We went to the road side park near cheboygen and the lighthouse near Rogers city Saturday and cleaned up on fosels a couple petosky stones and we both found our first pudding stones ever!

I love chert! As I'm teaching myself how to flintknap,, and after a year of no events, thanks goodness life is getting back to normal, I guess ? 😂
She taught eight grade science for 30 years. For a number of those years, the focus was earth science.
Only a minute and a half in, and I double checked to see if you wrote the name of that park in the ___ whatever it’s called part- the description (? Sorry- I’m not YT savvy), and found that link you have about the history of Michigan bedrock… 30 minutes later, and now I want to go back to college to learn more about how everything formed and shifted and formed a new layer, etc-it’s so fascinating! It takes me a while to picture what they’re talking about, but once I do -I want the bigger picture! Thanks again.

I don't really know too much about geology either. Did you see my video with the two geology professors from this summer? Dr. Nat has a TH-cam channel with three of her geology classes on it. Sometimes we find the choicest stones up beyond the brake of the shore. Where some would never think to look?
Not too much luck, but it was nice that Nancy went with you. I agree with her that the granite does come in pretty colors. It’s a shame that it doesn’t polish up well. I guess that you could just enjoy it in its natural state. I liked the black and orange rock. The black part didn’t look like it would polish up well though. The striped ones were neat too. I was just thinking that we haven’t seen Sam lately.I hope that all is well with him. The water must be warming up slightly, no gloves.
The water is a little warmer and so is the air. Sam has been coming over to the house the past few weeks to empty the tumblers. He was invited back two weeks after I got my second shot. we’ve been trying to get out together, but he’s busy with school and sports. Hopefully soon.

Yes - that one looks to be a septarian nodule (aka: lightening stone)
Also... I see the Detroit Free Press article of your big pudding stone from Jan 2020. Just wanted you to know, I have a big one here also (SE MI). Nice haul! :)
There are a lot of those huge puddingstones around. It’s still a thrill to find a big one. Thanks for the help with the septarian nodule.

Thanks, Ellie. That has been a really fun addition to my video equipment. I love looking at the video from that when I get home. I see it on my phone on the beach, but it looks so much better on a bigger screen.

Why don’t you like polishing/tumbling granite? I have a lot that I would like to tumble. What’s not good about it?
My very first batch was granite. It got pretty shiny but it undercuts. Undercutting is when one mineral in a rock wears away faster than another. In the case of granite, the black mica is soft and tumbles away faster that the other minerals. This leaves little pits and grooves in the rock that are not shiny. I'm kind of a perfectionist about my tumbled rocks and it bugs me when parts don't shine up. Other people are not nearly as picky as I am, so you might be perfectly happy tumbling granite. You should give it a try and see what you think.
Small pudding stones should be called:
“Pudding Pebbles”

I’m with Nancy in that I like to pick up and enjoy nice granite rocks. But I rarely keep them.
Looking is fine. Bringing them home is the problem. Darn things just don't tumble very well. One of these days, I should tumble some just to show why I don't like them. It would be a good opportunity to explain what undercutting is.
Great video's Rob. You've mentioned "gluing" rocks unto 2''x4's to hold the rocks for cutting in your slab saw, in past videos. Could you please tell me the name of the glue you use and describe the gluing process.
Sure, no problem. Right now, I’m using Elmer’s wood glue. I have used Titebond II in the past. Don’t use a waterproof glue because then you can’t get the last slab off the board. Just make a cut or several cuts, then cover the entire surface of the cut surface and clamp it to the board. Let it dry overnight and saw after that. Soak the last piece in water for a week or two to release it.
@@MichiganRocks Thank you! I would have never thought of using Elmer's wood glue. I will give it a try on my new Highland Park Model 12 slab saw. I'm thinking that gluing the rock to the end grain of the wood, for better glue penetration, would be preferable? What has been your experience? Also, you get such a great polish on the rocks. I'm wondering which specific polish you use and where you get it? I've been using Micro-Alumina, SKU #: 00031_CFG from Kingsley-North and wondering if I can do better. Thanks again for your help Rob.
@@bobdietrich5146 I have glued to both end grain and the side grain. I have never had a rock fall off.
I have never used Kingsley North polish, but I do use their 46/70 and 80 grit. I have no reason to think that their polish is not good, but since I haven't used it, I can't comment on it. I use the aluminum oxide polish from The Rock Shed. There's a link in the description of this video and it'a also in my Amazon storefront.
With that clear water I bet some underwater shots with a waterproof case would be awesome!
I have done a few videos with underwater shots. I don't do them often because the rocks out deeper are usually covered in sediment or algae. Here are a couple:

Hi there, I really enjoy your videos and would really like to explore the great lakes shorelines in the future. I just have one comment and it is in no way a complaint, more of an interesting experiment. The stones that you pick up, but cannot identify, yet they are still beautiful. Would it be possible to take a few back with you just to see how they would tumble or how they look sliced and polished?. I only ask because I find that I never find out if anyone can actually identify them. It seems a shame that we may miss the potential of a stone just because we don't already know what it is. I have watched several of Dan’s videos. I haven’t tumbled any because it’s really expensive to throw in a tumbler. I love the blue, but I am not crazy about the brown host rock.
if I collected roughly shaped rocks and put them just through the lot-o tumbler, would they get shiny? With the lumps preserved? I wouldn't expect things with vugs or other deep pockets to get shiny in this process, but I would like to preserve the shapes while still getting most of the rock shiny.
Yes, the Lot-O does that really well. You just have to be careful to clean out all the holes really well between stages. Here are a couple videos that show it pretty well.

Hi @MichiganRocks! Thank you for a great video and the link to the Bedrock Geology Paper. It is very interesting how Michigan forms the "bowl" like you said. I do have a question, is there an explanation on how Puddingstones were deposited? Different internet sources say that they are very old ~2.5 Billion years, but do not necessarily explain when the glaciers moved across Michigan. Maybe you and @DrNat13 can make a video ? Both of you have great, educational videos. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge! 😁
Capt. Paul tells me that they come from a place in Canada near Bruce Mines, if I remember correctly. I'd love to make a trip up there and get video of the outcroppings.

There are plenty of puddingstones on my videos, so if you search for a few of them you should be able to identify yours. Hopefully, that’s what you found.

I’d go to Hoeft. This was my only experience there, but I enjoyed it. The other place I’d go is Rogers City at Seagull Point Park. I don’t have a lot of other experience up in that area. If you like fossils, Rockport isn’t that far away.

You visited the only beach I've looked around at on Lake Huron...... many years ago! I would agree that you have a septarian, but I don't believe it came from there as the bedrock isn't right for septarian nodules. That begs the question then of where did it come from? Otherwise, some beautiful puddingstones along that beach.
That’s what confused me about it. I have never found a septarian in Lake Huron.
Do you know if any of the quarries from Alpena to Rogers City offer tours?
No quarries that I know of offer tours. Of course, Rockport is a state park and you can tour it on your own, but you probably knew that.
Many dark green rocks on the beach are passed over, what are they?
I'm not sure what those are.

Hey i was wondering if you could recommend some spots a little further south that i can hike or better yet kayak too along lake huron. Im going to be camping at sleeper state park which is mostly sandy but has some rocks. Wondering if there would be a good beach to drive/hike and or paddle to in the bay area?

I think you're thinking of National Shorelines like Pictured Rocks or Sleeping Bear Dunes. You can legally pick up rocks from state park beaches. I'm not sure if any have special rules against it, but I have never heard of them. You're not supposed to take more than 25 lbs. a year.

Yes, I know they're called that, but I don't really like the name. All that magical rock healing stuff really, really bugs me and that name is just a little to close to all that superstition for me.
the almost pudding stones look like they were at one time then re-melted and the colors somewhat blended together. just thinkin
I see what you mean, but I don't think that's what they are. The red isn't jasper like in puddingstones.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I haven't been to Van Buren, but I did know that area is known for lightning stones. That rock that I found did sort of resemble one, didn't it?
It looked similar yes i think the rock was cracked and filled in with calcite like a lighting stone..... pilgrim haven is the hot spot for these stones!!!

We love being together, but one of us doesn't like being on the beach for more than a couple hours.

You guys are like diamond hunters who stumble onto a few pockets of emeralds and rubys, and because they're not carbon based you ignor them.
The collection buckets you carry are far too large for what you keep.
I know, you already have so many rocks that if you bring back too many you'll need a bigger house.
Too bad you can't collect stones from Isle Royale. I bet you would find a few buckets full of very interesting stones up there.

I'm just itching to get back out... one piece of holy grail seam agate... if someone was to say we can go for gold or we can go to try for seam agate... its the latter I'm after... im finally getting I contact with some folks in my area... this is getting more and more exciting everyday...
Im trying to make a me spot... so I can work on things a bit better... and have a few cheap pieces of equiptment coming to try and make a little cab station going to be very slap stick... but I think it will work...

I have 8 half finnished little projects... going foolish after what I didn't know was right under my feet... but had the notion from what I remembered... on a tight buget I slipped in a little machine... and a couple assesories... bit of thinking and I'll make something that works for me... this is pure enjoyment for me and finally able to work it in...😃
