Let's be real here: if this show were done by anyone other than the Blue Devils, there would be little to no hate for it. Having marched two years of corps, I can easily say that this show is phenomenal, and, in my opinion, the best show that I've seen.
Agreed. The show was incredible and deserved what it got (Aside from brass caption, I still think Crown should've won that). People just don't like BD.
thing is, no one wouldve been able to pull this off besides blue devils. they always have these incredibly dense shows full of scope and they are just so amazing.
***** A few other groups could, but it would be out of style for them. Cadets, Crown, SCV, and Bluecoats all have the talent for this, they just isn't their style.
Blue Devils have a 2 hour documentary of this show on their channel. If you ever wonder why they got this score or what made this show the new standard I highly recommended watching it. It opens your mind to what they went through and how this show was miles ahead of everything that year. 2014 was the year the Blue Devils showed that you can't doubt excellence.
Jason V. So, the two hour version is called Inside the Blue Devils 2014 and the same documentary is also chopped up into 11 episodes called Inside BD 360 season 3. It will blow your mind. It totally changed my opinion of the show once I knew what was going on, especially the beginning of the opener and ballad.
I can admit that the Blue Devils are easily the best corps in DCI. But that doesn't make me like them anymore. Who wants to root for someone who's winning all the time? It's boring. But I can't deny that they are incredible
lordtacoz I see it more as Rooting for them to be fantastic and awesome rather than rooting for them to win. Finals this year was just a competition to see who got second place, but the victory run was still just as amazing as anything else they did this year.
Thad Jarvis each corps knows what they want. BD motives are so different from a corps like Phantom, and BD place higher. it’s just knowing what you want to do with your corps.
People are really quick to point out the mistakes and start pointing fingers nowadays, but give no credit to the recovery. Do you people understand how much is going on when they are performing? To recover the way these performers did was outstanding. I am not trying to give BD an excuses, but to recover they way they did and not freak out is why they are one of the best.
ihatenjoi Agreed. I'm pretty sure a corps with a perfect visual score wouldn't have a mellophone player stepping off a beat earlier than the rest of the hornline, and then having that SAME mellophone player be out of step. The whole "notable recovery" would've been way more tolerant had those mistakes been caused my two people, but they were caused by that same mellophone player. No disrespects, of course
ihatenjoi Coming from someone who marched Coastal Surge....... yeah one person out of 150 screwed up for a few seconds of the show. I suppose we should discount everything else. Those perfect 20's were well deserved. March a big boy corps that marches big boy drill and then maybe you will get it.
ihatenjoi Jersey Suck is a big boy Corps? LOL, wow - 22nd place, amazing. And you say that is a big boy Corps and Big Boy Drill. When you march a Top 6 Drum Corps let me know. Even comparing a tick from BD to Jersey Suck isn't even in the same universe. Hell, even Blue Devils 'B' Corps beat the shit out of you my 9 points and 9 places ha ha ha ha
you know lots of people think Blue Devils winning all the time can be monotonous. Honestly, I love their shows and i love how they sound and thats all that's important to me. To quote my band director "I dont care about the score, as long as we're super cool".
Hey DCI I have an idea. Why don't you guys make an online purchasable version of all the full shows through TH-cam. That would be cool to be able to buy a show that got a 99.65.
Drum Corps International Or you could let people post full videos of your competition on TH-cam, without purchase. You know, freedom and everything... Greedy assholes...
Michael Fussell Actually DCI would loose a ton of money, and since most of DCI is non-profit, it would be bad. And they are not "greedy assholes" for not allowing the full shows on TH-cam. A lot of the music played is owned and copyrighted by people other than DCI.
Jesus Christ their guard. I remember at shows after we have our corps and sectional meetings usually BD would go on after us so we'd get to see chunks of random tosses and tops of silks. But good god. So professional, musical, and clean. It's ridiculous.
If you watch earlier shows and rehearsal footage during the season you can see that person throughout the season had the same foot timing issue all season long, pretty much. I blame their height, + not getting that count 2 of the drill move.
You obviously have never watched Cadets....... or Bluecoats, or every other Corps. Every Corps in Finals has a tick here and there. Especially Finals night when you have a very emotional Show you are doing for the last time, and sometimes you have an individual try to do too much instead of marching their consistent show. It happens. But as a whole, there has never been a Corps and a Show better than Felliniesque - PERIOD. I love how BD haters find one or two ticks and say "Oh my God, they should be 6th place" or some Sophomoric dumb statement. You have to really dig to try and find something wrong with BD. BD is a bunch of badass marchers, and even better musicians. 16 World Titles - they are doing something right. Your problems are envy of BD........ period.
The Blue Devils remind me of that rival group in Glee, Pitch Perfect, (insert example here), that's pretty much unstoppable, but you always root for the other squad. I never get emotional watching their stuff. I do get emotional watching the Bluecoats, Carolina Crown, Phantom Regiment
i can help you out getting emotional over the blue devils. their ballad from 2016; most emotional i have ever gotten watching a show EVER. it's beautiful, you should check it out. blue devils 2017 jazz ballad, AMAZING. there's this one hit at the end that gives everyone chills i'm sure. blue devils 2015; when the little child pops out of the book, a very emotional moment, tells a story. the whole band is circled around her. blue devils 1992; when a man loves a woman, the portion of their closer, so much power, emotion. i could list many many more, but here are a few that will change your mind.
I think the thing that I’ve found that separates good corps from great corps is balance. Good corpse tend to have really heavy midrange, and that comes from the lack of range capacity from trumpets. Great corps have dominant high and low ranges, and the middle fills in to create balance, not to be the main voice
+Stephen Webber Tilt was amazing, Felliniesque was amazing. I liked Tilt alot, bloo is my favorite corps (im actually auditioning for them in the next week). When it comes down to it, BD's show was just cleaner. Even though I'm a coats fan all the way, having seen both shows I am ok saying that BD deserved the win.
TheMisterTango bloo fan myself but speaking of clean, notice how many BD members are out of step at 1:07 I personally find it odd that certain things like that didn't go into their scoring as much as it should of. Still a great show regardless.
I'm sorry but at least imo this was a way better show and at the very least felliniesque was much cleaner objectively, I am a huge kinetic noise fan however and I would honestly put it on about the same level as this show, at least musically :/
Michael The Cookie man mellos always get the coolest parts in dci. I love their fast runs and counter melodies but I'll probably be playing bari/euph if I join since I play trombone for school.
It was just a note "frack", unintentional, and pretty common in marching bands, especially when moving a lot and most of the time later into the show. It's when the player makes and unintentional and sudden change to their embouchure and or airstream, forcing the note to be played either a partial above or below the desired note.
My only issue with this production is that it is not a perfect visual. The scores say that it is but I don't believe so. They played the ass off the turf but to say that the visual is not flawed is a bit much for me.
Anyone who calls this the best show ever OR anyone who says this score wasn't deserved doesn't understand the DCI scoring system. It's not a tick system anymore, it's a build-up and compare system
Ok, YOU try pushing a 300+ pound synth cart, unloading marimbas, or playing crazy marimbas. All you do is unload and do marching and choreography. Pit isn't for slackers trust me, I've marched trombone and played in pit.
"Synth cart?" Now there's a key to why some of us don't like BD. I'm old school, and don't think a synth cart and other gimmicky crap belong in a DCI show. I want to hear the talents of the brass and drumline, not pre-recorded music, narration, and/or sound effects. Not arguing... if BD or any other corps wants to use that stuff, it's up to them. I just don't particularly care for it.
"All you do is marching and choreography"? Pit people aren't slackers but field performers definitely don't /just/ do marching and choreography either. :/
Any other year and tilt was probably a gold medal show (with some exceptions), but felliniesque was just way too clean, in the old Blue Devils tradition of wanting having the cleanest show, it was really a fight for second place. Not saying that Bluecoats and Cadets weren't clean, but just nowhere near the level of this show. (coming from a Bluecoats fan btw)
The great character work in this thing took BD over the top. The limping clown, Claudia Cardinale's white scarf, the circus atmosphere. Exquisitely rendered. The only vomitously awful things are 1) the tableau ending by the guard for absolutely no reason (ends up looking like camera hungry corps members dropped their characters and looked for limelight) , and 2) the excruciating eternity when the chair is brought on at the end and the performers could think of nothing to do as they desperately await some of the other characters to join them in presenting the chair. It's like, can't you think of a bit of stage business to do other than turn upstage and wait? Sweep the stage? Maybe an A.D. would call out directions to lighting or camera crew. But just standing there was a hideous gaff-- you can feel the performers' discomfort. Give them some business, for god's sake. 3) The women's hairstyles do not match the period. They look more appropriate for the bus and truck tour of Hair, not 1950's and 60's Italian couture. The choreographer was obsessed with using mops of hair as flags, apparently. Ghastly design gaffs in an otherwise perfect show. PS: The way to justify the tableau ending was to make it posing for a commemorative cast photo for the film 8 1/2, holding a sign saying, Roma 1963, with Fellini conspicuously absent. Alas, they didn't.
This show was not very entertaining for me it wasn't that great in my opinion at least Tilt had something that really defined the show not like this one what does Felliniesque mean anyways
To start, I recommend www.google.com Fellini was a movie director, quite famous. His movies were often very avant-garde and honestly weird, and in fact the term "Felliniesque" has come to mean "Something weird yet simple" or "esoteric". Knowing that, this show makes 100% sense.
I’m gonna get roasted into oblivion for this, but I still just can’t get into this show and I have no clue why, it’s not even cause it’s blue devils, I love the blue devils, I just don’t get this show
There’s a brass player literally out of step just before the jazz run section AND during the jazz run section. Perfect visual score??? Coats should have won 2014 IMO
Ok, explaining this the short way, while very many more people find tilt more memorable and entertaining (NOT to say that felliniesque was not), there was just no way that it was beating this clean of a show. Another example of this would be in 2019, with a MUCH tighter score gap then 2014, Bluecoats beat BD 8 out of the 13ish times at comps, but BD peaked in cleanliness at finals and semi's, even though many people thought "The Bluecoats" to be much more entertaining of a show than Ghostlight... (coming from a bluecoats fan btw)
Let's be real here: if this show were done by anyone other than the Blue Devils, there would be little to no hate for it. Having marched two years of corps, I can easily say that this show is phenomenal, and, in my opinion, the best show that I've seen.
