The tank that came with the bike is definitely aftermarket and called a “king (size)” style. As a 40 year veteran of Ironhead Sportsters I have always thought they looked terrible. Glad you replaced it.
Not sure. I had given thought to just grinding everything off and starting over but it already looks bad enough. I've told myself that this tank will just be an expensive lesson and I'll give it another shot later on.
I've pretty muched resigned myself to the fact that I'll be buying another tank in the future. But for now, I'm chalking it up as a learning experience.

Can you use a tap to re-open the hole for the fitting?

Damn that is some bad luck- especially when taking the time to do everything right.
