While the hardware of the Switch 2 is indeed impressive, it still can't beat the freedom and versatility of the Steamdeck due to simple fact its a PC handheld
While I do plan on getting a Switch 2 for Nintendo 1st party games, I won't be buying any 3rd party games on it. Steam Deck is just a better platform with more freedom all around.
It's just too bad that Steam doesn't let you own the games you spend money on. GOG all the way. I know an extremely small number of games are DRM free. But Valve isn't taking any pro-consumer initiative with regards to ownership of games.

They know what they are doing, what they need to look out for, they know the laws and where they can hustle in. A marketing executive, a CFO, a director of development, a company president.. none of them has the knowledge or training to pursue something like that let alone the time or ability to focus on those things as they have their own specialty and full schedules. Executives are advised and sign off with their leadership abilities and skills, they aren't in the trenches snooping on ROM sites or at the dock investigating counterfeit hardware.
I think that any real dip in the sales of Steam Deck is a more complex stew than just pinning it on Switch 2. Don't forget the upcoming Legion Go S with SteamOS that some PC gamers may be opting to save for as well. There is also a smaller seasonal drop following the Christmas / gift giving season. January is the time that people are buying games for the Steam Decks they got for Christmas, which could also push it lower in the top sellers list, which I am guessing is a completely relative list.
Its worth mentioning that weston is not builtin to wayland but a reference implementation of it. And as such, almost no end user uses weston. Projects like KDE and Gamescope look at Weston to see how they could implement these features themselves. So the changes from ACS will take some time to reach end users after reaching westons upstream.
Wayland is not a 'display manager' -- it's a set of protocols for graphical user interfaces. Weston isn't 'built in', it's a reference implementation for Wayland compositors. Wayland is the protocol or idea, not the actual software. Gamescope (SteamOS), Kwin (KDE, and Mutter (Gnome) are all different, unconnected implementations of the Wayland protocols, which define the relationship between the compositor (Gamescope, Kwin, etc) and clients (programs).

I have been done with nintendo since around 2018 after buying switch and the poor quality of the hardware and controllers, and mainly because they sell unfinished games on carts that require large downloads to play. Biggest reason is their greed and how they treat fans and gaming preservation, and how they try to dictate how players play their games.

I was pissed. It was for the Mario Bro Melee Ultimate game... so naturally my 4 year old wanted all the characters unlocked already but I was doing the Adventure side and didn't want him interrupting the "training" so I tried to copy it over for him to have his own... only to find this out. The Craptindo save system is gutter trash!
There's plenty of competitors announced in the past 2 weeks including SteamOS announced to be available for other devices. It's certainly not all Switch 2.
Regarding Intel not being serious about their GPUs, it's true that they've had a bigger push towards higher end GPUs recently, but I get the impression that they've been good about developing Linux drivers for embedded graphics chips for quite some time.
I just booted my Steam deck after about 3 weeks of not using it. It immediately installed a new update, and it had a new animation when it booted up while docked. Things seem good.
I have a Switch and Steam Deck which covers all my gaming needs along side my PC. I will be buying a Switch 2 for those exclusives and the rest on PC and Steam Deck.
The kernel 6.13 are supposed to have some new drivers for the Corsair void wireless headset (both pro and elite) but I haven't seen anything related to this if there is a gui for it or just something in the terminal. It's supposed to give us the battery life. I'm on the latest cachyos version which comes with this kernel but I haven't seen anything regarding this on the os.
While it's intriguing to ponder if switch 2 will affect it, I think I would have preferred if you cut out the wrong parts and talked more about the update at the end.

@H4GRlD good on the heroic devs, but as far as I know gog itself does nothing for gaming on linux :( I like the DRM free attitude, but it only really works if you use windows. Right now, if I buy through steam, I actually visibly get some benefits, looking at what valve did for Linux.
If AAA Third Party games start coming to the Switch 2 like they do the PS5 and Xbox (think Call of Duty, Halo, etc.) then MAYBE the Switch 2 will compete with the Steam Deck, but right now I really doubt the two are in competition. You buy a Switch (2) because you want to play Nintendo games (and also appreciate/enjoy the portability), whereas you buy a Steam Deck because you want to play Steam games on the go or prefer the hand held experience. I think the audience for who is picking between the two and will only get one is much smaller than people are imagining. The same way Sony and Microsoft don't really consider Nintendo their direct competitors in the gaming market (maybe that changes with the Switch 2 if it's hardware really is that much more powerful).
The lack of HDR support on Linux is a glaring issue for me. I so badly want to use my steam deck as HTPC for playing my bluray rips on my plex server. It lacks HDR though.
I think that, even if the Switch 2 turns out to be more powerful than the Steam Deck, you're not going to get the freedom of customization on Switch 2 as you would with the Steam Deck. EDIT: Not without modding the Switch 2, anyways. (If possible)

@@2greenify link to the notes? If you're talking about ntsync, the driver will land, but some games will see significant increases, many will be less so. And the deveoper of the patch set themselves stated clearly that the results will be wildly dependend upon game and involved hardware. Only a few edge cases saw extreme improvements over existing sync methods. While the gains aren't insignificant, overstating them isn't always beneficial either. The biggest impacts will be in games that heavily utilize the ntsync system calls... game engines that don't won't be heavily impacted. And many games are already benefiting from the esync and fsync patches that are already out. This is an improvement on those, but you're not going to see anything more than approaching parity with windows (which is where ntsync was reverse engineered from).
So... I just have to say. TH-cam has an AI recognition for when creators say "Like button" and they highlight the like button to remind people, but the way you say "Like that smash button" gets around that. I don't know if you you care, or if it matters too much, but wanted to point it out in case it might be something that reduces your likes.
Please stop that narrative about AMD GPU drivers being the best for Linux. There's still an ongoing issue with the Strix Point chips causing kernel crashes regularly. I'm lucky to have a discrete Nvidia GPU in my laptop, so I was able to find some workarounds, but the life of those who have only integrated graphics in those laptops is miserable.

AMDGPU is just bad, when it comes to multimonitor support. Anything that fixes it, is a HUGE welcome news. Wish they focused more on different refresh rates on different monitors not crashing linux though...
Man, I tried Nobara yet again. Seemed like frame gen was better finally once i unlocked power on my 7900xt but still not as fluid as windows11 in Stalker 2. Gaming felt like there was a lot of latency still in comparison i can't figure out why, it's just not as smooth an experience. I recently got an OLED and OMG VRR flicker is so bad in Linux yet nonexistent in Windows. That was the big turn away this time. I was ready to give up HDR but not for that crap. I love the idea so I keep coming back with hopes, but I'm left with disappointment. And Linux users just tell me these problems don't exist lol. Well they do. And you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to fix them.
@@saltycremepuff Agree but getting new hardware can reduce those overheads till improvements. Steam Deck 1 is fantastic but it's already a few years old and I have Archlinux + Steam to get over the time needed in a wait.

@frankhuurman3955 Credible sources and leaked information from game developers put the GPU power in the Switch 2 as slighlty less powerful than a rtx 2050 when docked. If that is true, than it is much more powerful than the gpu in the steam Deck, even when not in docked mode. The steam deck soc is pretty weak and inefficient compared to other handhelds with something like a z1 extreme soc. The switch 2 is using arm chips for the cpu which have much greater performance per watt than the amd zen 2 cpu's in the steam deck and in terms of gpu power and efficiency, Nvidia is much more efficient. Take a look at some of the reviews for an rtx 4090 card vs an amd 7900xtx and you'll see a huge lead in terms of watt/frame rate for the nvidia card. Not to mention ML upscaling in the switch 2 which is much better than the Decks FSR. Games will look and run better on the Switch 2.

I have to say, I have the steam deck, but when another device like the ROG Ally gets native steam OS support, with its power it already has, I’ll switch. SteamOS is a must, but the deck is starting to show its age a bit.

Nouveau is not Nvidia’s open source driver. It is an independent driver by RedHat.

I don't get what you plan to save by putting case insensitivity into kernel space? Either way you do a directory list then filter.
It's a mode in the filesystem that allows Windows apps to work better through Wine/Proton

The lack of HDR support on Linux is a glaring issue for me. I so badly want to use my steam deck as HTPC for playing my bluray rips on my plex server. It lacks HDR though.
Adaxum’s roadmap is ambitious, but the concept is interesting enough to take a chance on.
I think i've encountered the video + game = hang bug, but i thought that was my system having issues... guess it's time to update my kernel

Switch 2 isn't enough for me.
I'm still saving up for a Steam Deck. Too bad it costs like $600 for the base model down here.
I think that, even if the Switch 2 turns out to be more powerful than the Steam Deck, you're not going to get the freedom of customization on Switch 2 as you would with the Steam Deck.
EDIT: Not without modding the Switch 2, anyways. (If possible)

The next kernel version will be a lot more interesting for gaming. Lots of games will run 30 to 200 fps faster.
Some operations in some games will run many percent faster, but not 200fps faster. They will achieve better parity with windows performance at best.
@pcallycat9043 No I said lots of games, not an exact number. The percentages of sine games are literally stated in the patch notes of that kernel. Including the games that are tested and the fps benefits as stated.

@@2greenify link to the notes? If you're talking about ntsync, the driver will land, but some games will see significant increases, many will be less so. And the deveoper of the patch set themselves stated clearly that the results will be wildly dependend upon game and involved hardware. Only a few edge cases saw extreme improvements over existing sync methods. While the gains aren't insignificant, overstating them isn't always beneficial either. The biggest impacts will be in games that heavily utilize the ntsync system calls... game engines that don't won't be heavily impacted. And many games are already benefiting from the esync and fsync patches that are already out. This is an improvement on those, but you're not going to see anything more than approaching parity with windows (which is where ntsync was reverse engineered from).
That dip in sales looks like bad data. I don't think it is anything other than that.

So... I just have to say. TH-cam has an AI recognition for when creators say "Like button" and they highlight the like button to remind people, but the way you say "Like that smash button" gets around that. I don't know if you you care, or if it matters too much, but wanted to point it out in case it might be something that reduces your likes.
Please stop that narrative about AMD GPU drivers being the best for Linux. There's still an ongoing issue with the Strix Point chips causing kernel crashes regularly. I'm lucky to have a discrete Nvidia GPU in my laptop, so I was able to find some workarounds, but the life of those who have only integrated graphics in those laptops is miserable.
Its a pretty new hardware, ofc they gonna have problems ...

AMDGPU is just bad, when it comes to multimonitor support. Anything that fixes it, is a HUGE welcome news. Wish they focused more on different refresh rates on different monitors not crashing linux though...

Man, I tried Nobara yet again. Seemed like frame gen was better finally once i unlocked power on my 7900xt but still not as fluid as windows11 in Stalker 2. Gaming felt like there was a lot of latency still in comparison i can't figure out why, it's just not as smooth an experience. I recently got an OLED and OMG VRR flicker is so bad in Linux yet nonexistent in Windows. That was the big turn away this time. I was ready to give up HDR but not for that crap. I love the idea so I keep coming back with hopes, but I'm left with disappointment. And Linux users just tell me these problems don't exist lol. Well they do. And you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to fix them.

@@saltycremepuff Agree but getting new hardware can reduce those overheads till improvements. Steam Deck 1 is fantastic but it's already a few years old and I have Archlinux + Steam to get over the time needed in a wait.

Just looked a deck page when listening to video, and now deck is offered without a psu, sadly price doesnt go down when buying that
intel has the best driver. open source with no gamesmanship. amd has a closed source driver for advanced features. worse still nvidia still has a closed source driver and may not work properly with wayland. xorg is obsolete.

@frankhuurman3955 Credible sources and leaked information from game developers put the GPU power in the Switch 2 as slighlty less powerful than a rtx 2050 when docked. If that is true, than it is much more powerful than the gpu in the steam Deck, even when not in docked mode. The steam deck soc is pretty weak and inefficient compared to other handhelds with something like a z1 extreme soc. The switch 2 is using arm chips for the cpu which have much greater performance per watt than the amd zen 2 cpu's in the steam deck and in terms of gpu power and efficiency, Nvidia is much more efficient. Take a look at some of the reviews for an rtx 4090 card vs an amd 7900xtx and you'll see a huge lead in terms of watt/frame rate for the nvidia card. Not to mention ML upscaling in the switch 2 which is much better than the Decks FSR. Games will look and run better on the Switch 2.

I have to say, I have the steam deck, but when another device like the ROG Ally gets native steam OS support, with its power it already has, I’ll switch. SteamOS is a must, but the deck is starting to show its age a bit.
I'll switch when something with at least one good track pad and 4 back buttons appears which will probably be SD 2.
