As we travel through the history of Regina & Emma's badassery, we come upon a present-day battle. When an evil wraith lunges, Emma acts first, throwing Regina out of the way just before the demon gets swallowed up by their trap. But in the last moment, the demon reaches for Emma, pulling her through the vortex. Coming out the other side, Regina knows something is not right with Emma. When they all arrive at the hospital, Dr. Whale makes every attempt with Regina to discover what's wrong. What he sees is Emma physically fighting in a hospital bed, lacking response to any stimuli. But what Emma sees is her world becoming a nightmare. As she tries to hold on to her sanity, she ends up succumbing to the torturous dream. It is said that you can not die in dreams. But in a world full of magic, a nightmare could be your end.
Regina is heartbroken, guilt-ridden, and - through memories - realizes just how important Emma is to her...
When Emma awakens, she finds herself in a nightmare realm completely alone with nothing but a sword - a sword she swears she has seen before. She realizes what she must face, but instead of being given the option to wake up, Emma finds out that her only way out is to win this battle. And if she is to fail, she will die. As Regina learns of this from none other than Mr. Gold, she begins work to bring Emma home. While Emma sits in a coma in the hospital, Regina sets out to magically entrap herself into the nightmare world by any means necessary.
Regina wakes in her nightmare & begins to wander the despairs of her own fears. Regina's nightmare is embedded with life’s moments soaked in her deepest fear - being alone. As she looks for any trace of Emma, she begins to catch glimpses of the nightmare Emma is living, watching her battle a deadly monster with nothing but her wits & a sword. As Regina navigates through the nightmare, she uses these glimpses of Emma to find her way through the maze. But as the nightmare begins to claim Regina for its own, she suffers against its determination, growing weaker until she fears it will become her demise. As she is thrown to the ground by a powerful spell, the nightmare turns to capture Regina. But instead, at the very moment she thought she would perish, Emma appears in Regina's nightmare & saves her from the impending doom. Suddenly, Regina is whisked into a different dream - one where Emma is there, & is the only light she can find in the darkness -- her Savior. Regina is given a gift of seeing what she & Emma could be. But when her nightmare suddenly returns, Regina is threatened with being alone again, this time stealing Emma away from her. Regina will have none of it and shoves Emma away, sacrificing herself to save the woman she loves, welcoming death with a second thought.
But instead of death as had been prophesized, Regina awakes from the world of nightmares as if she had just been asleep. Regina had made the ultimate sacrifice to save Emma, causing her love to shine through, making it possible to escape its wretched clutches. Regina suddenly understands how to save Emma, but her time is very limited before Emma is lost forever.
But suddenly, her phone rings, & Regina learns that, sometimes, there just isn't enough time...
That is, until Emma figures out how to beat the monster with the very sword she has in her clutches, a sword Regina had once given her, thus allowing true love’s magic to radiate & breakthrough...
