I would vote Mr. McBride the coolest man on planet Earth right now. By far. Not only a genius of the BASS but a super cool and friendly soul.
If you want to develop jazz phrasing with the bow, you can't do better than the famous Kreutzer etude (No. 1 in the International Music edition of 18 Kreutzer Studies for String Bass. All of the bowings supplied are beneficial, but my favorite and the one that helped me most is one I added: down bow one, slur two, down-up, slur two, up-down, slur two, etc. If you don't know the etude, then learn it with all separate bows first. Then tackle additional bowings.

Glen Moore told me this same thing. He played crazy fast tempos working with Ted Curson, and picking up the stick for solos was a survival tool.

Hmmmm. This could be my solution to the synth bass sound l hear in my head. A sound l can not find on any pedal. I'll try setting up one of my five strings for some bow action🤔. Uprights are scary for me but the tone is magical and with a bow! Wow. Thanks Mr. McBride! Instructional and entertaining!

It's funny he mentioned the bow, in 1975 I tried a playing violin a coworker had for sale, I am a bass player, I tried playing it and it was so bad I gave up, it was worse than sawing through a tooth. I have since learned much more. Still play my fretless bass and fretted bass.
The German bow is more common in the United States, but the French bow is more common in the UK.

The way you play have you tried an 18th c snakewood violone or viola bastarda bow? That might suit your demand on elegant dexterity.

Your wrist is locked with the German. String crossings with the Butcher bow are the killer when trying to bop with the stick, endurance with the French. I started with the German and switched over, for the tone and nimbleness of the French. German is a better artillery weapon, though, hands-down.

How much rosin do you use..I have Pops on Spiros and it the bow never really bites into the strings...
use enough so that it doesn't cake on crystals onto the hairs. pops is infamous for that. pay attention the pressure you're putting on the strings and the grip as well.
Try some Nyman Harts, it's a harder compound that gets into the bow hairs better
What's the point of trying to play a French bow German style? Might as well get a German bow, learn how to play it. French bow is easier and in my opinion feels a lot more comfortable with that overhand style grip. Paul Chambers was an excellent German bow bassist.

My point is, it makes more sense to learn how to play a German bow if you primarily play French and vice versa. Yes, he was demonstrating German style with a French bow. But his point was he doesn't like German bow...period. That's fine for him, but it takes me back to my original point. Arco styles are individual and primarily used different ways in different genres of music. Good instruction should not limit the observer to only what is desirable to the instructor...Really!

This is supposed to be a teaser for an instructional video. Watching Chris McBride telling stories and showing off his (prodigious) chops is highly entertaining, but the educational value is really zero. The potential viewer of the instructional video should get some feeling the he/she is likely to learn something, but if the content of the video is similar to the teaser, this does not look promising. If I want to be entertained by Chris McBride, I'd rather go to one of his concerts. If I want to learn about jazz bowing, I'd rather check a top notch pedagogue like John Clayton or John Goldsby.
