  • How to rig routes on southern sandstone.
For climbers in the South East of England, sandstone crags such as Harrison’s Rocks are oases of adventure in a region otherwise seriously lacking in opportunity. The fragility of these southern sandstone crags means that climbers need to take extra care to protect and preserve them for the future.
This series of short films, produced exclusively for BMC TV in association with DMM, shows some of the special skills and considerations needed when climbing on southern sandstone.

Where is the redundancy in that sling? By clipping a single krab to a single, unlooped, unknotted sling, to another single krab, you have managed to create a system with not 1, not 2, but 3 points of potential failure with no backup. Protecting the rock is important, it's not more important than safety. You don't clip in when working near the edge, that bloke fully leaned over the edge to lob a rope down and had no protection. Furthermore, this archaic advice against lowering off needs to stop. Lowering off can only damage the rock if the climbing rope is contacting it. Given that the master point is dangling in free space, how (pray tell) do you expect to damage the rock?

Do you need to use a rope protector for your sling?

Yes preferably if you are having to set up from quite far back, because it helps protect the rock. Even though the slings/ropes are static, they do move a bit if fallen on. The "Demma system" is a PVC tube which
allows the rope to move freely when under load. Sandstone is very soft and cuts through very easily.

No safety line when rigging, and no helmets. Before protecting the rock, you should be protecting yourself.

mal, mal!!! sin arnés, sin casco nada!!! el riesgo de caída a distinto nivel esta presente y no se toman medidas, el relator se expone todo el tiempo. Mal!
